How many oz is a chicken thigh

Chicken thighs can range in size, but for typical grocery store brands, figure that four bone-in, skin-on thighs will weigh about 1 ½ pounds. But each of those thighs will yield about 2 ½ to 3 ounces of meat (the rest of the weight is skin and bone). I generally figure on two thighs per person.

The weight is not a hard and fast rule, but is a general guideline. If you happen to have leftovers, be happy: thighs reheat well and are often just as good the next day. (You can’t say the same for leaner chicken breasts, which easily get tough and dry.)

In this article, I’ve put together everything you need to know about weights, calories, and serving sizes of chicken thighs with or without skin and bone.

Use the easy-to-follow charts to quickly work out and find the information you’re looking for, including raw and cooked weights and information on how much of a chicken thigh is edible meat.

When Should You Weigh Chicken Thighs?

As a rule, if you’re calorie counting, you should weigh chicken thighs before they’re cooked because calorie information is usually based on the raw weight.

The exception to this rule is when you buy ready-cooked chicken thighs because the nutritional information on the pack should be based on the cooked weight and not the raw weight.

The nutritional information on a pack of raw chicken thighs is based on the whole weight including the skin (if they have the skin on), if you only use the meat, then it might make sense to weigh the cooked meat as this is the only part you’ll be eating.

How Much Weight Do Chicken Thighs Lose When Cooked?

The amount that chicken reduces in weight when it’s cooked, depends on the quality of the chicken and whether it has added water.

Because chicken thighs are generally cooked with bones and skin on, they tend to retain more liquid than skinless and boneless chicken which will dry out more during the cooking process. This is because the fatty barrier which helps to retain moisture as it cooks.

As a rule, good quality free-range chicken thighs with the skin left on will reduce in weight by around 25% of the original weight. For example, a raw chicken thigh weighing 100g will weigh around 75g after cooking.
