How many seasons was Pimp My Ride?

Whether you were a teenager or a full-grown up gearhead during the '00s, Pimp My Ride was a show that knew how to deliver passion for cars to the public and captivate audiences of all ages. They broadcasted this show between 2004 and 2007, and it was hosted by American rapper, actor and television presenter, Xzibit.

In each episode, people would bring in all kinds of cars in poor condition — sports cars, station wagons, trucks — which were then both repaired and customized. This time, Lady Leshurr, a British rapper, will step in to take over as a host of Pimp my Ride’s big return to the small screen. In fact, the new series is being featured on MTV’s YouTube channel. What About The Good Old Pimp My Ride Series?

In the '00s, not only the concept of the show but also the debut of the American rapper, Xzibit, as a television presenter were very promising, and it turned out to live up to everyone’s expectations. Pimp My Ride became one of the most popular series among the public on MTV.

The show’s plot was simple — people brought in their old battered cars which were later transformed into brand-new custom-made whips. West Coast Customs performed the whole procedure until season five, when Galpin Auto Sports took over. The show had so much success that they made several spin-offs. There have been local versions of this show in Brazil, France, Indonesia, and even the United Kingdom, where the host was British DJ Tim Westwood.

Unfortunately, not everything was ideal and rosy, with The Huffington Post’s collected testimonies revealing that “Pimp My Ride was nothing more than a big hoax.” They interviewed three former participants, and they made some serious statements about the series, like where the show stated that the modification on a particular car would take, for instance, two weeks, in reality, it took several months, forcing the participants to rent a car leading to legal battles with MTV for a refund. Other participants affirmed they removed a significant portion of the modifications shortly after installation “for security reasons.” Be it as it may, Pimp My Ride knew how to make its way up to the top of the most iconic shows for car enthusiasts. They finally canceled the show due to financial issues and public loss of interest.

The Big Return

Pimp My Ride has returned to UK television screens thanks to a collaboration between MTV and eBay, the country’s largest online retailer of auto parts and accessories. As mentioned, rapper Lady Leshurr presents the new show. The series is exclusively broadcast on MTV’s UK YouTube channel, where a new episode comes out every Friday. So far, it seems as though the new version of Pimp My Ride is pretty much the same as the old one. However, there’s a new approach producers are introducing into this new season. The series is taking the environment as a new point of emphasis. It brings consciousness upon the importance of bringing new environmental standards to the custom-build machines and to cars in general. The program will showcase the environmental advantages of DIY modifications utilizing renovated components from eBay’s Certified Recycled Hub, which sells pre-owned OEM components. The Wrench Studios handles restoration and modification of the cars in this series. A release made by MTV claims Pimp My Ride UK “will range from a restored 1966 Volkswagen Beetle to a 1992 Mitsubishi GTO with Fast & Furious influences.”

Kieran Dodd arrived with a battered 1992 Mitsubishi GTO. Despite the fact of having no actual license to drive his wrecked Japanese sports car, he still invests anything he can in renovating his whip. Kieran only asked his car to have a repaint in a bright color such as Ruby Red, and to make it look as though they took it out of a Fast & Furious movie, a film he’s a big fan of.

The team loved the idea of using a Ruby Red hue on this car, and so that's what they did. Furthermore, they entirely renovated the interior with color matching leather seats and leather details. On top of all that, they completely changed the engine for an entirely repaired twin-turbo charged engine, courtesy of eBay, similar to the one found in the UK-spec Mitsubishi 3000GT. Kieran's car went from a damaged engine that produced 180 hp to a recycled twin-turbo that hits 320 hp. They added other features to match the engine upgrade, such as performance air filters, a new transmission and exhaust.

Will the new season be able to match the old show? Will Lady Leshurr be able to rival Xzibit’s nerve and humor? There’s a lot to see, but there’s one thing that will remain unchanged — for those who consider themselves car nuts, there are TV shows that helped define their passion for cars, and this series is no exception.
