Walmart Cashier: At Walmart, I’m just a simple cashier. I clock in, I go to the front end, get behind the register, take a break here and there, get a lunch break. Yeah, for the most part, it’s ringing customers up, bagging and then completing the transaction.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?

Walmart Cashier: Compared to … In contrast to Family Dollar, which I previously worked at, very team-oriented. There are points where you have independent spots in your duties, but almost always there is a team member waiting to assist you, should you have any problems or just on call for whenever you have questions.

Interviewer: What was your favorite part about working there?

Walmart Cashier: My favorite part about working at Walmart was definitely the people I met there. I’ve connected with a lot of the associates I’ve met at Walmart. That might be due to the environment, it’s located near a college town, but I found that the social environment there, at least among co-workers, has been the best that I’ve ever experienced so far.

Interviewer: Please describe the application and interview process.

Walmart Cashier: The application process for Walmart was online. It involved general information, like education, name, reason for applying. Then it also consisted of several tests. There was a cash transaction test, which wanted to test how quickly you could do cash transactions in your head because obviously, you would be doing that as a primary duty on the cash register. Also, there was a work environment attitude test that kind of wanted to feel out your personality; whether you’re willing to be cooperative with others, how you would treat certain events that happen that might be common in a retail store. After that, I got a call back probably about a week after finishing both of those processes.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?

Walmart Cashier: They wanted prior work experience. One of the things that they made a centerpiece of the interview and the application process was they wanted a specific instance in which you had provided excellent customer service and care to a person at any one of your prior work experiences.

Interviewer: What set you apart from other candidates?

Walmart Cashier: I really came in to Walmart with an open mindset, and I was really looking for a place to work at that point. I think I really demonstrated a willingness to learn from the experience that I would get if they hired me there, and I wanted to kind of invest myself in that one because this was the first job I found that actually fit completely ideally with my summer schedule. In addition, the starting pay offered was better than anything I had been offered before, so I was really looking to make the most out of this job that I could.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?

Walmart Cashier: That if you’re looking to apply at Walmart, the management structure is extremely supportive, and you probably won’t find a better one in basic retail anywhere, at least in my own personal experience. If you do apply to Walmart and you get the position, but it’s not everything you’ve hoped for, they are very fluid in allowing you to transfer departments. There’s a whole plethora of different experiences that you can try at Walmart, so if one isn’t totally suiting you, try exploring those options before thinking that the job might not be for you, or you would like to work elsewhere.

Walmart Cashier: Going in. After you clock in, you have to count your drawer, make sure it’s the right amount. Then, just start checking people out.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process with Walmart?
Walmart Cashier: It was done online, or at least I did it online. It does take a few to do it. It is a longer application, due to the fact they do an assessment test on you.

Interviewer: What should an applicant wear to the Walmart job interview?
Walmart Cashier: Kind of dress up, but not over-dress. It is just Walmart. They wear khakis and a dress shirt or polo shirt. So, dress slacks and a dress shirt would be fine.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Walmart Cashier: “What could I bring to Walmart?” Since I was a cashier, they asked me more math questions.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment with Walmart?

Walmart Cashier: I was a cashier for Walmart. My primary duties was basically serving people and giving them a better environment. When people come to Walmart they need help and they don’t know where to go to. As a cashier, you’re the first person that they talk to so you always had to have a good attitude and so forth like that. Makes people feel friendly and feel like they coming home, just come inside their kitchen, or come inside your house.

Interviewer: What was the work environment like?
Walmart Cashier: The work environment was interesting. It was … You had your entertainment moments and you had your dull moments. At Walmart, you don’t know who is going to come in, honestly. Some days you might have a wild person who is … Some days you may have college kids who are trying to get something for a party. You just never know.

Interviewer: How would you describe the application and interview process?
Walmart Cashier: The application process is long. You’re going to go there and they are going to have the little machine and you’re going to … When you go there, just make sure that you have time on your hands because there is going to be questions. I really can’t go into too much detail, like the questions that are being asked, but as long as you keep a clear head, a clear mind, and just answer honestly, then you’ll be good to go. Just make sure you have time.

Interviewer: What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Walmart Cashier: He asked me what … He asked me about bringing what happens outside, inside. He asked me how I would handle an irate customer. You may have customers that are going to come in that ask you, that say, well this back here says it was $5 and it rang up $14. How would you handle that situation? He asked you real life things that will happen to you. All the questions that he asks you are things that you may experience. You may have a strong possibility of experiencing them.

Interviewer: How were you notified that you received the job?
Walmart Cashier: Well first, once I filled out the application, I had my interview. I gave them about a week or so and I called to check the status of the application. Then when I checked the status of the application, then he, I guess, he pulled my application in and he was like, okay you’re real good. You did real good on the interview then he let me know in about two to three days. It was a very timely, well manner fashion.

Interviewer: What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Walmart Cashier: Don’t give up. Right now we … You may be at that point where you feel as though you can’t find a job. That’s that point where the job comes and don’t close a door on any opportunity because you never know what opportunity can open up what network capabilities you can have. Working at Walmart, you guys, a lot of people may think that I don’t want to work there but like I said before, you don’t know who may come in. A person may come in who may be a business owner to another company and say, well, you have very good customer service skills, sir or ma’am. You want to … Here is my card, just give me a call some time. You never know what can come in.
