Samsung is one of the largest companies in the world. With its headquarters in Samsung Town in Seoul, South Korea, the tech firm was originally founded as a trading company, but launched into the electronics market in the 1970s.

In 2015, Samsung announced it wanted to become the globe's largest appliance maker. As you’d imagine, this was a major goal and meant it would need to surpass many well-known multinationals, such as Whirlpool, Bosch, and Electrolux.

Samsung came up with the notion to win the battle through their smart home designs. More advanced than anything other household brands were producing, Samsung’s range of home appliances would include refrigerators that dispensed sparkling, as well as still, purified drinking water. It would also feature several different compartments where water could be cooled to different temperatures — something never seen before.

While they might not be quite at the top of the leaderboard just set, Samsung is certainly one of the major appliance makers in the world. Their fridges are incredibly popular, not only for their ability to keep food chilled and fresh, but also for the way they revolutionise plain old drinking water.

One of the reasons water tastes so much better when it comes out of a Samsung fridge is because of its advanced filtration system. Samsung’s water filters leverage the latest technology to filter as many impurities as possible out of the regular water piped into your home, leaving you with amazing quality water that tastes just as good as the bottled stuff.

To continue drinking great water at home, it’s essential you regularly replace your Samsung water filter. Don’t change it often enough (or worse — don’t change it at all) and your water filter will become completely ineffective after some months, leaving you with unpleasant tasting drinks you’ll be embarrassed to serve your friends and family.

So you can continue to be proud of your delicious brews, fresh water, and crystal-clear ice, we’ve put together a quick guide on everything you need to know about replacing your Samsung fridge filter at home.

1. How to replace RSG5UCRS Samsung Fridge Filter:

If you’ve never replaced your RSG5UCRS Samsung Fridge Filter before, we’ve got some good news for you — it’s easier than you think.

When the filter indicator light turns orange or pink, it’s time to purchase a new filter. When it turns red, it’s time to change the filter. If six months has passed and the indicator light hasn’t turned red, we still recommend changing the filter to maintain the high quality of your drinking water.

Around 90% of the American-style fridge freezers have an internal water filter. The following instructions refer to replacing internal filters only. Scroll down for instructions on how to replace an external filter.

3. How to Reset the Water Filter Indicator Light on a Samsung Fridge

Every Samsung fridge which has a water filter also has a water filter indicator, telling you when it’s time to replace the water cartridge. Even if the light doesn’t change colour, it’s always a good idea to replace the filter once every six months to carry on drinking the same top quality water you’ve grown to love.

If you don’t change your water filter regularly, it won’t work. Instead of great tasting, pure water, you’ll be stuck with odd tasting water that potentially contains unwanted contaminants.

Here are the different colours you’ll see on your water filter indicator and what they each mean.

Blue: Your water filter is doing its job correctly
Pink/Orange: Your water filter is five months old and you should purchase a new one soon
Red: Your water filter is no longer functional and it’s time to replace it with a new one

How to reset the indicator
Follow the instructions on installing the new water filter above. Reset the indicator light by pressing and holding the "Alarm / Hold for 3 seconds to Reset Filter" button. If your model has an inside control panel, hold the "Power Cool" and "Fridge" buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. This will reset the indicator light back to blue.

5. Why You Need to Change Your Fridge Filter Every 6 Months

You might think you only need to change your fridge filter every time the indicator light recommends it — but that’s not true. Waiting until the light turns red can be dangerous for your health.

A water filter stops contaminants passing from the pipes into your drinking water. When the water filter is no longer effective, all the contaminants which have been trapped can now pass through into your drinking water, making it even dirtier than if you didn’t use any water filter at all.

Each Samsung water filter uses an activated carbon filter media that is certified for use with a limited quantity of water before you need to change the cartridge out. This amount of water is usually what an average household will go through every six months.

The activated carbon filters out contaminants from water by absorbing them. As the water passes through the filter, it captures impurities and makes them stick to the surface of the carbon.

When there’s no surface area available to absorb new contaminants, the filter's capacity has been reached. At this point, many contaminants in the water will simply flow past the filter into your drinking water.
