Here’s the good news: Every player in Pokémon GO is guaranteed to at least catch one Meltan through this special research story, which is available to everyone after starting the game. That said, the quest line consists of nine steps with three tasks each, so there’s quite a bit of work to put into completing it. Furthermore, the tasks involve a lot of evolving of certain Pokémon, which you can make easier by planning ahead, and you need to catch Ditto, which makes this whole thing quite dependent on your luck.

Mystery Box in Pokémon GO

The Mystery Box is a special item in Pokémon GO that can be activated every four days to bring about an encounter with Meltan. It offers the only chance to catch the monster on a regular basis, which is especially important for those hunting the Shiny variant and for evolving it into Melmetal as you will require additional candy for that purpose.

Obtaining the Mystery Box in Pokémon GO

You can get the Mystery Box by linking Pokémon GO with Pokémon HOME or Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu and transferring one of your monsters from the smartphone game there.

Connecting Pokémon GO with Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu

To link Pokémon GO with Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu, follow these steps in Pokémon GO:

1. Open the menu by tapping the Pokéball icon.
2. Open settings in the top right corner.
3. Select the Nintendo Switch option.
4. Select the Connect to Nintendo Switch option. Bluetooth must be enabled for this to work.

Once that is done, follow these steps in Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu:

1. Open Settings.
2. Select the Connect to Pokémon GO option.
3. Answer Yes to all questions.

Once you have cleared this hurdle, you need to transfer a monster from Pokémon GO. You’ll now find a Switch icon in the top right corner of your Pokémon storage in the mobile title.

1. Select the Switch icon.
2. Choose the Pokémon to be transferred. These can never be sent back into the game.
3. Confirm the transfer.

Then head to GO Park in Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu and do the following:

1. Talk to the person at the left counter.
2. Select Transfer Pokémon.
3. Select a park with enough space for the amount of Pokémon you’d like to transfer.
4. Confirm everything.

After that, you should get the Mystery Box as an item in Pokémon GO. Activate it like Incense to attract a Meltan to your location. The Mystery Box can only be activated again after three full days have passed and you have transferred another Pokémon out of Pokémon GO.

Connecting Pokémon GO with Pokémon HOME

You don’t necessarily need to own Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu or even a Nintendo Switch to get the Mystery Box. Alternatively, the process works quite similarly via Pokémon HOME. For this, you need the Pokémon HOME app on your smartphone or Nintendo Switch – the free version is sufficient – as well as a Nintendo account. You must use the same Nintendo account for GO and HOME.

HOME prompts you to log in with a Nintendo account after starting it up anyway, so if you don’t actually have one yet, just follow the instructions in the app to register. In Pokémon GO, here’s what you do after you’ve set up HOME:

1. Go to Settings.
2. Select the Pokémon HOME option.
3. Follow instructions to connect.

Once that is done, return to the Pokémon HOME setting in GO, where you will now find the Transfer Pokémon option.

Follow the instructions and choose the monster or monsters you want to transfer – again, it or they can’t return to GO at any point. Confirm the transfer in HOME and you will receive the Mystery Box in Pokémon GO.

The same mechanics will apply here as before: there is a cooldown on the activation and you will also need to transfer another Pokémon to use the box again. This works the same way with both the mobile app and the Switch app. You can also use Pokémon HOME to transfer monsters from Pokémon GO into Pokémon Sword/Shield.

Meltan at the TCG Crossover Event – Pokémon GO

During the TCG Crossover event from June 16, 2022, to July 1, 2022, at 8 p.m. local time, one of the six Collection Challenges rewards you with an encounter with Meltan. To make that happen, you’ll need to trade and catch the following Pokémon:

• Venusaur (Trade).
• Charizard (Trade).
• Blastoise (Trade).
• Snorlax (Catch).
• Slaking (Catch).
• Dragonite (Catch).

The TCG Crossover event also shortens the Mystery Box cooldown (it can be activated every two days during the event) and allows you to catch the Shiny variant.
