What Pokémon are no longer available in Pokemon Go?

In 2021, Niantic introduced Generation 6 (Pokemon X & Y) to Pokemon Go. The mobile game has been going strong for nearly six years now, but despite there being eight generations worth of Pokemon to pull from, There's still a surprising number of the adorable Pocket Monsters who have yet to arrive.

Surprisingly, there are still entries missing from as far back as Generation 3 (Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, & Emerald). Now, some of these older, empty spaces are just region-locked (we'll go into that later), while some Pokemon in the game are simply rare to find, which adds a disadvantage to acquiring them. Here's what we know about the gaps in Pokemon Go's Pokedex.

Updated January 4, 2022, by Cameron Roy Hall: Nintendo is riding high on the release of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, the Switch remakes of the Generation 4 DS titles of slightly shorter names, which were released to broadly positive reviews late last year. Later this month, Nintendo will release an entirely new title, Pokemon Legends Arceus, an open-world adventure, for the Switch. While Nintendo chugs ever along towards the Next Big Thing, Niantic is still playing catch-up with Pokemon Go. Here's the most recent stats on what Pokemon are still missing from the massively popular mobile game.

8/8 Generation 3 - Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, & Emerald

Missing Gen 3 Pokemon: Kecleon.

The normal type Pokemon, Kecleon is known as a sneaky character in the core games, so perhaps that's why the little Generation 8 lizard is still missing from Pokemon Go. It is possible that Niantic is saving it for some spectacular event, but if that is the case... they're keeping it impressively close to the chest.

There was a brief spike in hope, back when Smeargle was announced to appear during random photographs the player might take, but alas. No Kecleon yet. At this point, Niantic better stick to the bit and insist that the dead-eyed chameleon be the final Pokemon to ever join the mobile roster.

7/8 Generation 4 - Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, & Platinum

Missing Gen 4 Pokemon: Shaymin, Phione, Manaphy.

It's been a couple of years since Generation 4 was added to Pokemon Go, and to be fair, Niantic has almost completely added Pokemon from Diamond and Pearl, but there are still a few notable absences. Three legendary Pokemon, to be precise.

Like with a lot of legendaries, they are usually saved for events. Arceus only made its god-like way into the game last year, so maybe there's hope for these other friends.

6/8 Generation 5 - Pokemon Black & White

Missing Gen 5 Pokemon: Larvesta, Volcarona, Keldeo, Zorua, Zoroark.

Much like Generation 4, Generation 5 (Pokemon Black & White) is only missing a few, notable, legendaries and pseudo-legendaries.

What with the status of legendary Pokemon in the game, it's no doubt they will be rolled out as part of some raid event, although Keldeo still being absent is a surprise. Larvesta is the kind of Pokemon you would expect to be part of an event or a rare egg to hatch.

5/8 Generation 6 - Pokemon X & Y

Pokemon X and Y Box ARts

Missing Gen 6 Pokemon: Scatterbug, Spewpa, Vivillon, Flabebe, Floette, Florges, Skiddo, Gogoat, Furfrou, Honedge, Doublade, Aegislash, Inkay, Malmar, Helioptile, Heliolisk, Tyrunt, Tyrantrum, Amaura, Aurorus, Hawlucha, Dedenne, Carbink, Klefki, Phantump, Trevenant, Pumpkaboo, Gourgeist, Bergmite, Avalugg, Zygarde, Diancie, Hoopa, Volcanion, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, Mewtwo X/Y.

Generation 6 (Pokemon X & Y) is the most recent generation to be added to the games and it still has quite a long way to go. Pokemon such as Pancham are some of the new additions and no doubt the rest will follow in groups.

Niantic and Pokemon have never been ones to provide a whole generation at once and usually add fifty Pokemon from a new generation at a time. There is still almost half of Generation 6's Pokedex to go and it would be positive to see a lot of them added to the game before the end of the year.

4/8 Generation 7 & 8 (Pokemon Sun & Moon, Pokemon Sword & Shield)

Pokemon Generation VII and VIII

Included Gen 8 Pokemon: Perrserker, Obstagoon, Runerigus, Sirfetch'd, Mr. Rime, Skwovet, Greedent, Wooloo, Dubwool, Falinks, Zacian, Zamazenta.

Technically speaking, Generation 7 (Pokemon Sun & Moon) and Generation 8 (Pokemon Sword & Shield) have not been added to Pokemon Go yet, but a few of the new Pokemon from Sword and Shield have appeared in the mobile game, if only to elicit more Switch sales.

Because there are so few from Generation 7 or 8 currently available, it will be easier to list the twelve that are present in the game as opposed to listing the seventy-seven Pokemon still unavailable.

3/8 Shinies

Shiny Ursaring In Pokemon GO After Being Evolved

There is an abundance of shinies still missing from the game. A lot of fans were displeased with the recent announcement of shiny Pokemon coming to the game as everyone has their favorites.

A lot of shiny Pokemon are reserved for special catching events where a couple of hours, usually on a Saturday, are dedicated to catching a specific Pokemon. These are known as community days and let you have the chance of catching rare Pokemon. The encounter rate for shiny Pokemon is rare just like in the main series of games, but slowly and surely they will all make their way to Pokemon Go... at some point.

2/8 Mega Evolutions

Pokemon Masters Mega Lucario

Pokemon Missing Mega Evolutions: Alakazam, Kangaskhan, Pinsir, Aerodactyl, Steelix, Scizor, Heracross, Tyranitar, Sceptile, Blaziken, Swampert, Gardevoir, Sableye, Mawile, Aggron, Medicham, Sharpedo, Camerupt, Banette, Glalie, Salamence, Metagross, Latias, Latios, Rayquaza, Garchomp, Lucario, Gallade.

While some Pokemon, such as Venasaur, Charizard, and Blastoise, have their mega evolutions as playable in the game, there are a vast majority of Pokemon still waiting on theirs.

The mega evolutions make Pokemon more powerful in the game and the energy required to enhance them is gathered from winning mega raids, so the price for entry is steep, to begin with. Hopefully, more of these variants will appear in the near future.

1/8 Region-Locked Pokemon

Kangaskhan being called in an SOS Battle in Pokemon Sun and Moon

Region-Locked Pokemon: Tauros, Kangaskhan, Mr. Mime, Farfetch'd, Corsola, Heracross, Torkoal, Volbeat, Illumise, Zangoose, Seviper, Solrock, Lunatone, Tropius, Relicanth, Shellos, Carnivine, Pachirisu, Chatot, Mime Jr., Uxie, Azelf, Mesprit, Throh, Klefki, Heatmor, Bouffalant, Sigilyph, Maractus, Basculin, Sawk, Pansage, Pansear, Panpour, Durant.

While these Pokemon are technically in the game, they are only specific to one part of the world such as Europe, America, Asia, or Africa. The main way to acquire these Pokemon without traveling would be by having a friend from these areas to trade with.

That being said, some have been released through special events. You would think by now these Pokemon would have been on a seasonal rotation as to not provide too much of a disadvantage towards a player... but no such luck.
