As a podcast host who interviews authors on a weekly basis, I must read...A LOT. 4 books a month to be exact. Before picking up Speed Reading I could barely keep up...and honestly couldn't keep up. Something had to change. That's when I came across Speed Reading by Kam Knight. The average 200 page book used to take me 4-5 hours to work through. After learning many of the simple tips Kam provides (like flipping through books before reading them and not pronouncing each word in my head) I've been able to get that down to 2-3 hours per book. As I continue to practice what Kam teaches, I'm sure I will be able to decrease my reading time even further. The second thing I wanted to talk about was the belief I had that by speeding up your reading, you'd lose comprehension. Kam isn't telling you to speed for the sake of speeding. Applying these tacticts, I've actually been able to RETAIN the information I'm reading about. Obviously, if I'm having in depth conversations with the authors I'm interviewing, I need to actually understand their books.Lastly, this book is as concise as could be. It took me only an hour to read - think of this book as an investment in getting time back while understanding what you're reading at a deeper level.10/5 if I could...

I'm a master's student at the University of Texas, which means I read a lot, more or less it's my life right now. So I've studied plenty about reading and learning including Jim Kwik and Evelyn Woods, and even the newer authors in the sphere. I can honestly say this one stands out in many respects.

First, the book backs up its claims with research. Majority of the other guys don't support their claims like this book, which cites a wealth of journals, publications, and experts. Even common sense suggestions have support.

Second, the writing is solid. It's easy to read, the content is carefully organized, and Kam's explanations are insightfully creative, so you're not just reading a bunch of instructions, but instilling better habits. It's an experience, you have to read it to understand.

Third, as a masters student, I not only have to read a lot, but understand, remember, and spit back that info, either in exams, presentations, or meetings. As the book stresses over and over, increasing speed without increasing comprehension is "not" speed reading, so you'll learn many strategies for raising understanding and memory with the speed.

Fourth and the main reason the book stands out, are the novel techniques not in other books, like Space Reading. For me, Space Reading was hands down the best and easiest way to improve my reading speed and comprehension, it was almost instant. The technique single handedly tripled my reading ability and now I race through books in record time.

Though it is not without its flaws. No doubt some of the tips are obvious and common sense, and some you have already learned, but all in all, it's not a bad book.

The techniques do work so if you're new to speed reading, I'd start here as the writing and explanation make the concepts easy to grasp and apply, and using the techniques is what matters more than learning a bunch of stuff you never put to practice.

Wonderful book that I bought to help me slay a dragon also known as STEP1.

I have read my share of speed reading material, and this one shines for a number of reasons. For starters, it's extremely well written. It is easy to read, neatly organized, and straight to the point without any fluff or filler.

More importantly, the book presents unique and innovative ideas like Space Reading, which I had never heard or seen anywhere before. Never considered looking at the blank space between words instead of the actual words, but I tried it and amazingly it worked. This trick alone tripled my speed, and continues to improve

Luckily, the focus is not only on speed, but comprehending what you read. Comprehension is the running theme and the book presents numerous ways to nail it down. Before this book, I never realized how much of the author's point I was missing, even though I thought I was getting it. Now I can truly follow an authors argument and not get lost in the details.

Also, the book is written for a wide variety of readers with varying skill levels, interests, and challenges. Therefore, it helps to identify your struggles and focus on the tips that address them.

Where it doesn't shine is not everything here is new, and some tips are missing. Though, I do like Kam's explanations and descriptions, his stories, diagrams, and visuals make concepts extremely clear and easy to dive into.

Overall, I think it's a good book offering numerous tips and exercises. If it's your first stab at speed reading, you'll reading and comprehension will improve.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should Have Done My Research First

Reviewed in Canada on March 7, 2021

I bought this book based on the good reviews. It did not work for me, and now I know why.

Typically, I look for evidence-based ways to improve performance. This book, and the reviews for it, make claims about reading performance improvement but provide no references to any research. So, I went looking and, among other evidence and lack of evidence, I found a research article from 2016 titled "So Much to Read, So Little Time: How Do We Read, and Can Speed Reading Help?" Basically, you can improve your reading speed in short bursts but, over the long-term, you cannot improve reading speed without reduced comprehension. In other words, by skimming you can go faster but you loose comprehension.

This book makes the claim that you can double or triple reading speed within minutes and even further with practice, and that you can read a 200+ page book in one hour. There is no evidence to support this.

There is a chapter on subvocalization in which the author says that most people are guilty of this habit in which you move your lips or speak words out loud while reading. I have seen some children do this. I have never seen an adult do this. This is useless for most people.

In the chapter on regression the author says that regression reduces comprehension. This would be true if you focus on each individual word. This would only apply to the slowest readers.

In the chapter on visual range the author claims that you can learn to read a page by looking down the centerline of the page. People trained in "speed reading" have been tested with devices that track their eye movements. They scan each line as anyone normally would, they must, or they will lose comprehension.

There is a dubious chapter on eye exercises. We are told to do these daily. As with the rest of the book, there is no evidence presented to show that this improves reading speed.

Like many self-help books, this one is full of hype. People get hyped long enough to leave a glowing review, but the long-term benefits are unproven.

Here are some things that I have found that do work to improve reading speed:

1. Improve your vocabulary and comprehension so that you do not get stuck on words or phrases and have to re-read them.
2. Be more selective about what you read. Skim some documents and focus on the content you need. You will not read faster, but you will get more value from what you read.
3. Use proven techniques to overcome fatigue and depression and develop the ability to relax and focus. This will help you read faster because you will not loose focus and have to re-read. It will also allow you to spend more time reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Purchase. Helpful book.

Pros: helpful tips to improve speed reading. It provides drills/exercises to implement what you are learning in each chapter. Easy to understand.

Cons: more exercises with questions and answers would be beneficial to test comprehension. Sometimes analogies or stories used to explain a specific point did not resonate with my learning style but it might help others.

I would recommend this book because I genuinely think that if you follow the instructions within, you will reach your goals. It’s a very short book with large font and clearly structured chapters. You really can’t go wrong if you buy this title.

There are more speed reading techniques that the ones included in this book. But, this is not relevant, just an observation. What matters is what you can achieve with the tools this author is providing you with. My experience is Plenty!!!

Fun and entertaining book that encourages any person of any age to improve reading and comprehension while studying or reading while in the train or plane.

Long lasting skills for life. Fast delivery and it reads well. Congratulations to the author! I am sure many people will learn new tips and others will refresh old knowledge. In both cases, this is done effectively and in a lightweight manner. Nothing to complain about.

This book really goes to the point. Very well written. It is very easy to read and gives you useful tips and information on how to read faster and remember the information. I really recommend it.

How long should it take me to read a 200 page book?

The average reader will read 200 pages in 5.6 hours when reading at a speed of 300 words per minute (wpm). Typical documents that are 200 pages or more include full-length novels. A typical single-spaced page is 500 words long. You may read faster or slower than this depending on your average reading speed.

Is reading 100 pages an hour fast?

While a slow reader will only get through 30 pages per hour, the average person can read around 40 pages per hour. Statistics show that quick readers can even go through 50 or 60 pages in one hour.

Can you read 200 pages 1 hour?

200 pages an hour is quite fast for most books. Although pages per hour can be subjective, a children's book reads much faster than a textbook for example, and some novels have fewer words per page than others.

How many pages of a book should you read in an hour?

Generally speaking, you should read at about 200 to 300 words per minute (wpm) or 30 to 45 pages an hour. This will allow you to maintain a good momentum of reading and comprehension.
