You don’t need to activate your new debit card when you receive it – it’ll be ready to use straightaway. If you want to make a contactless payment, you’ll need to do a chip-and-PIN transaction first.

The new card we send you will have a different number. So if you’ve registered your old card’s details anywhere – eg, with online shops or for regular payments, such as a gym membership, you’ll need to update the details.
If you still have your old debit card, please destroy it when the new one arrives.

It isn't unusual for a Visa or other credit card to be lost or stolen – it happens and your card issuer deals with the problem every day. Laws like the Fair Credit Billing Act and the Electronic Fund Transfer Act help to limit your liability so you aren't responsible for fraudulent charges made on your card. Reporting your Visa debit card lost or stolen can be an inconvenience, however, because you can no longer use the card and must wait for a new one to arrive.

Reporting the Issue

When you can't find your Visa debit card, you should report it as lost or stolen right away. The Federal Trade Commission says that you can no longer be held liable for unauthorized charges on your card once it's been reported as lost or stolen. The sooner you make the report, the better your protection and the safer your money. The FTC also recommends following up on the phone call reporting the card as missing with a letter to the card issuer that includes the date you made the call, your account number and details of when the card went missing.

Lost Cards

if you notice you've lost your card and can't find it right away, reporting it to your card issuer is a judgment call. If, for example, you know you've lost it by your bed, you may want to give it an extra day or two before you make the call. Once the call is made, the card is canceled and a new one is issued and mailed to you. Reporting a lost card as missing and finding it the next day can be a frustrating experience.

Stolen Cards

If you believe your Visa debit card was stolen, report it immediately. As for your employees, remind them that "I found a credit card and used it," counts as employee theft, in case the card gets misplaced at work. As with a lost card, a stolen card is canceled and a new one is issued and mailed to you.

Unlike with a lost card, you're unlikely to find it later and canceling it is definitely the best choice. Even if the person who stole it never uses it, you'll get the new one more quickly than the stolen one will be returned to you in most cases. If you're wondering, "If I order a new debit card can I still use the old one?" for online purchases, the answer is no – the account itself is on hold.

Accessing Funds

If you're thinking "I lost my debit card how can I get money?" and can't wait on the replacement card to arrive in the mail, discuss other options with your issuer. In some cases, you may be able to get a cash advance from a bank. According to Visa, this can be done in as soon as one to three business days. The organization that issues your Visa may also be able to send the card more quickly if you're willing to pay the shipping fee. If you choose to do that, the fee may be charged to your card, lowering your available balance.

  • Withdrawing Money From Lloyds Without a Card

Are you looking for a way to withdraw cash without your Lloyds card? Perhaps you lost your card, forgot it at home, or are waiting for a replacement? While it's not always a smooth process, fortunately, there are still several different ways to withdraw money from Lloyds without a card.

Sadly, however, as of October 2021, it's not yet possible to withdraw from Lloyds cash machines without a card as — unlike other high-street UK banks — Lloyds Bank doesn't support cardless withdrawals. In this guide, we explore some helpful workarounds to withdraw money from a cash machine without your Lloyds card before weighing up practical alternatives to use instead.

What You'll Find in This Guide

Does Lloyds Offer Cardless Withdrawals?

No, Lloyds doesn't offer cardless withdrawals at any of its cash machines, meaning you cannot withdraw money from Lloyds if you don't have your debit or credit card on you.

Unlike other UK banks such as HSBC, RBS, Santander, and Barclays — which allow customers to make cardless withdrawals via their respective mobile banking apps — Lloyds Bank is somewhat behind the curve when it comes to this functionality and does not yet offer it to its clients.

As such, the only way to withdraw cash from Lloyds is using your card at a cash machine (up to £500 per day for Lloyds debit cardholders), over-the-counter at a Lloyds branch, or up to £50 cashback at most supermarkets across the UK¹. For Lloyds credit cardholders, fewer limits apply, but withdrawals ("cash advances") are significantly more expensive due to cash transaction fees and interest².

Option 1 — Get Emergency Cash

In the event that you lose your card or it gets stolen from you, you can arrange emergency cash from your account by contacting Lloyds Bank. You'll need to have enough balance on your current account in order to use this method, and it's only available to customers who've either lost their card or had it stolen.

If you're in the UK, you can call 0345 300 0000 to contact Lloyds about a lost or stolen card and request emergency cash. If you're abroad, you can call +44 1702 278 270 instead.

What You'll Need

  1. A mobile phone or landline;
  2. A Lloyds current account with sufficient balance.

Option 2 — Visit a Lloyds Bank Branch

Another option you have to access cash from your Lloyds current account is to visit your nearest Lloyds Bank branch and request a cash withdrawal over the counter. While this service usually requires you to show your debit card, for larger withdrawal amounts, the bank will only want to see your ID. This means that, in general, your ID should suffice in place of a card for withdrawing cash over-the-counter from Lloyds.

However, because Lloyds Bank isn't explicit about the requirements for cash withdrawals over the counter, we recommend calling your branch in advance to confirm that they can withdraw money on your behalf without your debit card and, if needed, that they have the necessary cash on hand in the branch (if they don't, you may be required to give Lloyds up to two days' notice³).

What You'll Need

  1. A valid ID (e.g. driving license, passport, EU ID card, etc.);
  2. A bank statement.

Option 3 — Use Another Account or Card

If you don't have a Lloyds card, you may well have another bank account, debit card, or credit card to use to withdraw money from at a cashpoint instead (British people carry around two debit cards and one credit card on average!)

If you have a debit card linked to another bank account, you can even transfer money from your Lloyds account to the associated bank account. Once the transfer arrives (which is usually on the same day), you'll be able to withdraw money from a cash machine with your debit card using cash that had initially been from your Lloyds account.

However, naturally enough, this method won't work if you've lost or forgotten your entire wallet along with your Lloyds card!

What You'll Need

  1. An account and card from another bank or
  2. A credit card.

Option 4 — Ask a Friend To Do It for You

If you have a friend who banks with Lloyds or any other UK bank and is ready and available to help, then asking them to withdraw the money for you is an excellent option if you don't have a Lloyds card yourself.

The good part about this option is that your friend doesn't even need to be a Lloyds Bank customer in order to receive your funds quickly. All major UK banks are united by Faster Payments Service (FPS), a payments service designed to reduce transfer speeds⁴. As a result, if you're sending under FPS limits*, a transfer from your Lloyds online banking account will probably arrive in your friend's account within two hours⁵, and possibly a lot sooner still.

What You'll Need

  1. A friend;
  2. A Lloyds current account with sufficient balance;
  3. A smartphone or other device with an internet connection.

* Online payments limited to £25,000 per day.

Option 5 — Use a Mobile Payment App

This method is probably the most convenient of all if you don't necessarily need to withdraw physical cash from a cash machine but want to access your Lloyds balance to make small purchases* using other methods (e.g. online shopping or point-of-sale payments).

In this case, it's a good idea to have your Lloyds account linked to a digital wallet or digital payment solution, the most popular of which in the UK include:

  • Apple Pay;
  • Google Pay;
  • Samsung Pay;
  • PayPal.

To link your Lloyds account to one of these wallets, you'll need to add your bank card as a payment method via their mobile app. You can then use your smartphone to pay by scanning it at point-of-sale terminals and having the money deducted directly from your Lloyds bank balance, or selecting the mobile wallet where it shows up in online checkouts.

What You'll Need

  1. A smartphone;
  2. A Lloyds current account with sufficient balance;
  3. A P2P mobile payments app.

* Up to £250 and £100 per transaction for Google and Apple Pay respectively.

Option 6 — Use a Global Debit Card

Whether you don't own a Lloyds card, lost it, or forgot it at home, the most effective way to withdraw cash is to use a prepaid debit card specially designed for low-fee transactions — including cashpoint withdrawals.

Using a competitive travel card product, you can dodge cash withdrawal fees altogether, even when travelling overseas and spending in a foreign currency. (The only costs you might incur in these instances could be network fees from the cash machine itself or a small Visa or Mastercard exchange rate markup, although it depends on the card.)

If you travel abroad from the UK often, one of the best options available is Wise's Multi-Currency Account, which gives you access to a current online account, multi-currency balances, and a debit card.

Once you're signed up with Wise and your card has arrived (which takes between two and six days), you'll be able to take advantage of the following unique features:

  • Local bank details in the US, Eurozone, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Romania, Canada, Hungary, and Turkey;
  • Hold, exchange, and top-up up to 56 currencies;
  • A multi-currency Visa debit card that's handy for paying in foreign currencies without the hidden fees;
  • Access to Wise's powerful international money transfer service right from your account balance.

Alternatively, we also recommend Monzo, particularly if you're looking for a fully-fledged current account with outstanding fees and exchange rates for domestic and foreign spending. One of the best-priced UK banks, Monzo is the ideal option if you're looking for an (almost) fee-free alternative to high-street banks and don't mind a more limited range of services, e.g. a prepaid debit card and current account, in exchange.

Having among the most competitive fees out there, opening a Monzo account and using it within the UK is entirely free. However, withdrawals are free up to £250.00 a month in EEA countries and the UK, and up to £200.00 in countries outside the EEA. After that, you’ll be charged 3.00%.

We also recommend looking at our pick of the three best challenger banks in the UK to get a fuller picture of these product offerings and what they could do for you.

What You'll Need

  1. Proof of residence;
  2. A valid ID (e.g. driving license, passport, EU ID card, etc.);

Withdrawing Cash Without A Card

Can I still use my debit card if I requested a new one?

Damaged cards If you order a replacement Visa Debit card, you can still use your old card until you receive and activate your new card. When you get your new Visa Debit card, you should activate it immediately. You can activate it using the 4-digit PIN of your previous card.

When you activate a new debit card does it deactivate the old one?

When you activate your new card, your existing card is automatically deactivated, so you should destroy it by cutting it up or shredding it to protect yourself against fraud.

What happens when you order a replacement card?

You'll receive a new card number when you request a replacement card. So automatic bill payments with your old card number will be declined unless you update your payment information.

How long do replacement cards take Lloyds?

Once ordered you'll receive a new card within 3-5 working days, depending on the type of card you have ordered. Contactless enabled cards will be sent for all eligible accounts, unless you have previously opted out of contactless.
