Yes, the 2023 Pathfinder is a very good SUV. It comes with a long list of standard tech and driver-assistance features, an airy and modern interior and versatile seating and cargo-hauling configurations. It also has decent cargo capacities and fuel economy, confident handling and a smooth ride. It can even handle some light off-roading. Its sole engine option is merely adequate, and this Nissan has an outdated infotainment system, but there are few other flaws.

Should I Buy the 2023 Nissan Pathfinder?

The Pathfinder is worth a look if you want a value-packed, upscale and family-friendly three-row midsize SUV. That said, this highly competitive segment has many strong contenders. For a more luxurious family hauler, the Hyundai Palisade is a great choice. If you need to cart more cargo, the capable Honda Pilot could be for you. If you’re willing to sacrifice some passenger and cargo space for a legitimately engaging driving experience, the svelte and swanky Mazda CX-9 is your best bet.

2022 vs. 2023 Nissan Pathfinder: What's the Difference?

Following a complete redesign for the 2022 model year, the new 2023 Pathfinder sees few major changes. For 2023, the big news is the introduction of the Rock Creek trim. This rugged model includes a more potent version of the standard engine, some off-road-centric features and unique styling cues.

2023 Nissan Pathfinder Versus the Competition

Nissan Pathfinder vs. Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride is one of our top-ranked midsize SUVs, and it outshines the Pathfinder in nearly every respect. It has a more powerful engine, a higher-end interior, more passenger and cargo room and additional standard driver-assistance features. The Pathfinder can tow more and has better off-roading chops, but otherwise, the Telluride comes out on top.

Nissan Pathfinder vs. Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander ranks similarly to the Pathfinder, but they differ in a few important ways. Both models have upmarket interiors, plenty of standard features and similar cargo capacities. The Highlander gets better gas mileage, however, while the Pathfinder has more second- and third-row passenger space and a higher towing capacity. The Nissan is also more capable off the beaten path.

Pathfinder Interior: Spiffy and Spacious

2023 Pathfinder Interior Quality

The 2023 Pathfinder boasts a modern and upscale interior with good fit and finish and plenty of soft-touch surfaces throughout. There are some hard plastics present, but these are mostly hidden. The cabin is also well-insulated, resulting in minimal wind and road noise intrusion.

2023 Pathfinder Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

The Pathfinder is equipped with an intuitive infotainment system and a healthy number of desirable features. There are also plenty of redundant physical buttons and knobs for controlling audio and climate functions. The only downside is that the system looks and feels outdated compared to many rivals’ interfaces.

  • Standard infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice recognition, satellite radio, Bluetooth, four USB ports and a six-speaker audio system
  • Available infotainment features: a 9-inch touch screen, navigation, a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless device charging, wireless Apple CarPlay, two additional USB ports and a 13-speaker Bose audio system
  • Additional standard features: tri-zone automatic climate control, push-button start and proximity keyless entry
  • Other available features: a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, remote start, a universal garage door opener, a 120-volt household-style power outlet and a panoramic sunroof

2023 Pathfinder Cargo Space

The Pathfinder’s cargo capacity is on par with that of most midsize SUV rivals. It has 16.6 cubic feet of room behind the third row, 45 cubic feet behind the second row and 80.5 cubic feet with both rear rows folded.

There’s a small storage area hidden in the floor behind the third row, as well as plenty of cubbies and cup holders scattered throughout the cabin.

How Many People Does the 2023 Pathfinder Seat?

The Pathfinder can seat seven or eight people across three rows, depending on configuration. Seating is comfortable and supportive in the first two rows, and there’s plenty of head- and legroom. The third row is more accommodating than what you'll find in many competitors – it can actually fit adults – but it's still cramped.

2023 Pathfinder and Child Car Seats

For installing child safety seats, the Pathfinder comes with three complete sets of LATCH connectors: two for the second-row outboard seats and one for the third-row driver’s-side seat. There are tether anchors for the second-row middle seat (with the second-row bench seat installed) and for the third-row passenger-side and middle seats. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the highest rating of Good+, which indicates that it's among the easiest and most versatile to use.

Pathfinder Performance: Gets the Job Done

2023 Pathfinder Engine

The 2023 Pathfinder comes with one engine option: a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6. The standard version produces 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque, while the Rock Creek trim is slightly more potent with 295 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Both versions are paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The V6 provides adequate acceleration for both daily driving and highway jaunts, but it’s hardly a thrilling engine. The transmission gets kudos for its smooth shifts, but some critics note that it can be sluggish to downshift.

2023 Pathfinder Gas Mileage

The 2023 Pathfinder gets decent gas mileage for the midsize SUV segment. Front-wheel-drive models get 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel-drive models see a 1-mpg improvement in city driving. The heavier SL and Platinum models get slightly worse mileage with 4WD: 20/25 mpg city/highway. The Rock Creek trim has the worst fuel economy of the lineup at 20/23 mpg city/highway.

2023 Pathfinder Ride and Handling

The Pathfinder impresses with sure-footed handling, direct steering, minimal body roll and a smooth ride. It’s also fairly maneuverable in tight spaces. On the downside, you'll feel larger bumps and potholes in the cabin, and the steering can feel heavy and slightly numb at lower speeds.

2023 Pathfinder Off-Road Performance

The Pathfinder is a fairly capable off-roader, but it isn’t designed for serious rock crawling. The new Rock Creek trim helps you tackle tougher terrain with upgrades such as a specially tuned suspension, a slight boost in horsepower and torque, an off-road camera system and all-terrain tires.

2023 Pathfinder Towing Capacity

The Pathfinder can tow up to 6,000 pounds when properly equipped.
