Is there any time limit to activate debit card?

There’s just one thing to be aware of – you’ll need to be registered for SMS Security to activate your card and set your PIN via the NAB app and NAB Internet Banking.

The easiest way to activate and set your PIN

You can easily activate your new card in the NAB app or NAB Internet Banking. Learn how to activate a card and set your PIN using our handy guide or use our Customer Assistance Directory if you need more help.

Find easy ways to manage your cards online. 

  • It only takes a few minutes to activate your card and set your PIN. Once you’ve completed the process, you can start using your card straight away.

  • You should activate your card as soon as you receive it, even if you don’t use it very often.

  • At the end of the activation process, you’ll receive a message, ‘Your card has been successfully activated’, which means your card is ready to go. If you don’t receive this message, please call 13 22 65 or visit your nearest NAB branch.

  • To change your PIN on any personal or business NAB debit card or NAB credit card, simply login to the NAB app or NAB Internet Banking. Go to Cards, select the relevant card then select Change your PIN. To use this option, you’ll need to be registered for NAB SMS Security. You can also call us on 13 22 65 or visit your nearest NAB branch for more options.  

  • So far, we have introduced this enhanced security functionality to personal NAB debit cards, NAB Platinum debit cards and NAB credit cards. In future this functionality may also be extended to our other NAB cards.

  • Yes, you can use the NAB app or NAB Internet banking. To use these options, you will need to be able to receive a security code on your mobile phone so you will need to be registered for NAB SMS Security. For this, you will need to have your phone on global roaming while overseas. If you can’t activate using these channels, you can call us on +61 3 8641 9083. 

  • If you don’t activate your card, you won’t be able to use it. However, if you have a compatible iPhone or Android™ phone and want to make contactless payments using your NAB credit or NAB debit card, you can use your mobile device to make contactless payments. Read more about Digital Payments. For payments $100 or over, you'll need to enter your PIN. If you don’t have a PIN, you can set one by going to the NAB app or NAB Internet Banking Cards > Select your card > Change your PIN. You will need to have SMS Security set up before you do this.

  • You can activate your NAB credit or debit cards via SMS if it’s new, a replacement card or if you’ve moved to another type of card.

  • Yes, additional cardholders will need to activate their own card.

What is Visa's Zero Liability?

With Visa's Zero Liability Policy you are covered for any fraudulent or unauthorized transactions. You can use your card with no risk of loss, covered against proven fraud that you did not contribute to. Visa Zero Liability applicable only to transactions processed through the Visa network and subject to investigation of the unauthorised transaction.

Why are my Available Balance and Current Balance different?

The Available Balance shows funds that are ready for you to use straight away. The Current Balance is the amount that may include card authorisations waiting to be processed or cheques to be cleared.

How do I dispute a transaction on my HSBC Visa Debit Card?

To dispute a transaction on your HSBC Visa Debit Card, complete the Transaction Dispute Form and return it to HSBC within 30 days of the posted date of the transaction.

When I get a replacement or reissued HSBC Visa Debit Card, will the card number change?

The HSBC Visa Debit Card number will change for lost, stolen or damaged replacement cards for security reasons, however it will not change for reissued cards (on expiry). Remember to update any recurring payments with the merchant or debiting organisation if your HSBC Visa Debit Card number changes.

Please contact us as quickly as possible to report your card lost. We will issue you a replacement card with a new card number, and a new PIN. This is a security measure in case your lost card and PIN have been compromised.

Is there a time limit on debit card activation?

The Debit Card must be activated within a time period, or else the PIN number given by the bank becomes invalid. Once the PIN number becomes invalid, the Debit Card can only be activated by Phone Banking or by visiting the branch personally.

Can we activate ATM card after 1 month?

Yes, you can. A mobile phone number is not needed to activate a debit card.

How long can a debit card be inactive?

If you SB or current account hasn't witnessed any transactions(credit/debit except interest credited the bank, deduction of service charges, for more than 1 year, the account is rendered inactive. On exceeding 2 years, the account is declared dormant/inoperative.
