Messi first psg game

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner was unable to inspire Mauricio Pochettino's side to victory at Roazhon Park

Lionel Messi suffered his first loss as a Paris Saint-Germain player as the Ligue 1 leaders failed to register a single shot on target in a 2-0 defeat at Rennes on Sunday.

Messi returned to PSG's starting XI after his match-winning turn in their 2-0 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League last week, during which he registered his first goal for the club since signing on a free transfer following his departure from Barcelona.

The 34-year-old was unable to have the same impact at Roazhon Park, with Rennes producing an impressive all-around performance to spring an upset and hand Mauricio Pochettino's side their first league defeat of the 2021-22 campaign.

Messi and PSG humbled

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe were both guilty of missing good chances in the first half and Messi saw a trademark free-kick cannon back out off the crossbar, but Rennes ended up taking the lead just before the interval via a Gaetan Laborde volley.

PSG fell even further behind just after the restart as Flavien Tate doubled the home side's advantage and Mbappe saw a goal ruled out for offside later in the second half, with the visitors ultimately losing with all 13 of their shots at goal failing to hit the target.

Things got even worse for Messi and co after the match, as their coach was blocked in the Rennes car park due to clashes outside the stadium.

Pochettino's reaction

Pochettino was left lamenting his team's wastefulness in the final third, but also admitted that they have yet to find the right "balance".

"We are sad because we played very well for 25-30 minutes," the PSG boss told his post-match press conference. "We did not manage to score the chances we created. We are unhappy but we must continue to work.

"Of course, we are coming out of a difficult period physically. We have to get over it all. After this negative result, we must make a self-criticism. We cannot be satisfied, but there are also some positive things to keep. We will try to find the right way to play, the right balance."

What's next?

PSG are still top of Ligue 1 despite the loss at Rennes having won their previous eight games, and sit six points clear of second-placed Lens.

Pochettino will hope Messi and o can bounce back after the international break, with the French giants set to take on Angers on October 15 - four days before their next Champions League group stage outing against RB Leipzig.

Lionel Messi's first "Classique” ended in a 0-0 draw between Marseille and 10-man Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.

The stalemate between the two bitter rivals reduced PSG's lead over Lens at the top of the French league to seven points after 11 rounds.

PSG played with 10 men after Achraf Hakimi was sent off in the 56th minute at the Velodrome Stadium in traditionally the biggest match in French football. Hakimi brought down Cengiz Under on a counterattack.

Messi almost struck shortly before halftime when his left-footed shot from outside the area went wide and he had a close-range header saved in the 25th minute.

Both teams had a goal ruled out for offside by VAR in the first half — Marseille defender Luan Peres' own-goal in the 14th after Neymar's shot and Arkadiusz Milik's low shot in the 21st.

Messi is the all-time top scorer in Spanish “clásico” matches between Barcelona and Real Madrid with 26 goals. Host Barcelona played its first clásico without Messi on Sunday, losing 2-1 at home to Madrid.

In other French league games, winger Wesley Said grabbed a first-half brace as Lens beat Metz 4-1.

Ignatius Ganago and Przemyslaw Frankowski also scored for Lens.

Nice beat Lyon 3-2 and is third in the standings, two points behind Lens.

Also Sunday, Monaco beat Montpellier 3-1 and Rennes enjoyed a 1-0 home victory over Strasbourg. Lorient and Bordeaux drew 1-1, and Troyes won 2-1 at Reims.

On Saturday, defending champion Lille dropped more points after a 1-1 draw against Brest.

The Argentina international replaced Neymar for the final 30 minutes, while Real Madrid target Kylian Mbappe scored both goals for PSG.

Messi's debut was broadcast on the free-to-air channel Telecinco in Spain, with figures released on Monday revealing the match had an average audience of 2.2 million viewers, making it the most-watched programme in the country Sunday.

In total, over 6.7 million people tuned in to watch PSG's win at some point during the 90 minutes.

Barcelona's 2-1 win over Getafe in LaLiga, meanwhile, which was on pay-per-view television, averaged 591,000 viewers.

The PSG game was also shown live on the Twitch channel of Ibai Llanos, a Spanish streamer and esports commentator.

Llanos' broadcast drew an average audience of over 300,000, peaking at 500,000. The total number of people who tuned in to the stream topped 2 million.

The rights to the French league were bought by Barca defender Gerard Pique following Messi's move to Paris in August.

A source told ESPN last week Pique's company, Kosmos, plan to sublicense the rights this season, with Telecinco and Llanos only securing access to Messi's debut.

Pique has struck up a close relationship with Llanos in recent months and appeared as a guest on the pregame show Sunday. Through Kosmos, he streamed the Copa America final between Argentina and Brazil on Llanos' Twitch channel in July.
