My hero academia - league of villains undercover

“I intend to return the world to how it ought to be. To do that, I need power. Enough power to rein over all and stand at the pinnacle of strength.”

– Nine

In a world where the mightiest Quirk makes right, how far are you willing to go to gain the ultimate power?!

A My Hero Academia one-shot manga by Kohei Horikoshi, prequel to the movie Heroes Rising.

My Review

This is very short and sweet at only 9 pages long, but it gives us a bit of background for the villain of the My Hero Academia movie Heroes Rising, Nine.

We know he’s an experiment of the League of Villains, and here we see how he becomes involved, and his reasons behind taking part. He’s actually in a rough spot when we first meet him. His Quirk is damaging his body, and this experiment is a chance to improve his health, as well as rectify the injustice he sees in the world.

He’s very determined to achieve his goal: destroy the world, and create one where the strong rule over the weak, a goal not too dissimilar to Shigaraki’s. The two characters have some parallels with one another. They’re both downtrodden by society, their Quirk affects their body in a negative way, and they both want to change the world for the ‘better’ by destroying it. He’s basically a trial run for something Shigaraki undergoes in later volumes of the My Hero Academia manga.

There’s also little snippets of fellow villains that we see in Heroes Rising: Mummy, Chimera, and Slice. We see how they lived before they began working with Nine.

Overall, a quick but informative read. I’d give it a go if you plan on watching Heroes Rising as it’s a good prequel with information I wish I’d known before watching the movie as it gives context as to why Nine is working for the League.

My hero academia - league of villains undercover

level 1

Do I have to pay to read it?

Edit: (I really wanna support Horikoshi but my parents wont pay me a subscribtion or something)

level 1

So where does it fit in manga timeline? as in after which chapter or should be read on its own?

level 2

Well at the very least it was before All For One was sent to Tartarus by All Might but I'm pretty sure its suppose to take place before the events of the main story.

level 1

Is it time I finally get a Viz subscription? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Edit: No, no it isn't. Looks like Tumblr's still good for something after all ...

level 2

I mean the subscription is only 2 bucks and you get a BUNCH of manga to read thru plus that money helps our favorite authors and illustrators keep making more amazing stories! Anyways I for sure feel I get wayyy more than my money's worth each month I definitely recommend it

level 2

level 1

My hero academia - league of villains undercover

This is a pretty good 1 shot manga that covers a bit of how Nine came to be in the Heroes Rising movie. Nine's character motivations in this are a bit dumb, but they can simply be chalked up to his delusions of grandeur that he's had (presumably) since childhood. Everyone is in character, and the 1 shot accomplishes establishing a bit of background info for all of Nine's teammates, despite being only a few pages long. Overall this manga is a nice read, but if you haven't watched the movie then there's really no reason to watch it, as it has no supplementary material ...
