Imagine being dropped in the middle of nowhere, with only a few tools to help you survive. No food, no cell phone, no nothing. Then imagine doing it naked. Now, imagine if you’re single and paired up with other single people, and all of you are looking for a love match? That’s the idea behind Naked And Afraid Of Love, a spinoff of Naked And Afraid which is probably more about finding someone to date than surviving while naked. Read on for more…

NAKED AND AFRAID OF LOVE: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: Scenes from Naked And Afraid, the show from which this one was spun off. “Over eight years, almost two hundred people have bared it all to take on the primitive survival challenge, Naked And Afraid,” says a voiceover.

The Gist: In Naked And Afraid Of Love, 16 single people are dropped in the middle of nowhere — conveniently by a beach, of course — in male-female pairs. The first time these pairs meet each other, they’re both completely naked.

Throughout most of the first episode, the pairs assess each other, and all of them try to “maintain eye contact” instead of looking at each other’s equipment. They’re not always successful, though. For instance, a firefighter from Brooklyn named Barak, has an “accidental erection” (which is also the name of the episode) when he sees the super-confident Lauren for the first time.

Each pair spends their first day figuring out how to build a fire and finish a shelter that is partially constructed for them. In almost all the cases, there’s at least some chemistry. During the second or third day, however, much of the chemistry wears off when hunger and other discomforts set in. That’s when the pairs are told (er, we mean “decide”) to move on.

At that point, the couples start finding each other, and new attractions are built. Lauren, who’s had enough of Barak, gets attracted to Michael, a former NAA contestant, when she and Barak run into Michael and Chrystal, a cute photographer. Dive expert Rachel, who’s had her fill of dim surfer dude David, swim and surf over to where Steffen and Arielle are trying to make a fish trap, and new sparks fly. But how long will any of these couples last?

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Believe it or not, Naked And Afraid Of Love isn’t the first naked dating show we’ve seen. VH1 had a show called Dating Naked on from 2014-16 that we admittedly watched far too much of when it aired. But this takes that concept to a different level, combining a dating show like Bachelor in Paradise with, well, Naked And Afraid.

Our Take: The first episode of Naked And Afraid Of Love spends its 90 minutes (!) in a bit of a repetitive mode, introducing each pairing, seeing them interact with each other without getting sexually charged up, then seeing them work together to at least get through the first day. You can tell that the producers are more concerned with the dating aspect than the survival aspect, as it seems like a lot of things are set up for them in advance, like an instruction book and a half-completed shelter.

But we wish that the show was more Survivor-like, with the singletons dropped in one spot at once and then starting to mingle. Even having two groups of eight would have worked. Yes, we know that Naked And Afraid‘s format has people working in pairs. But the pairs spend so little time together — Two days? Three? — before being joined by other pairs that we barely see them working together to survive.

Which is why we got a little tired of seeing each singleton talk about why they’re single as they stand on a catamaran, then get naked, then get in the water. One of the other things that starting with the pairings show is that, while checking out each other’s goods is a titillating prospect, we’d imagine that the novelty of it wears off quickly when a) people’s “quirks” pop out, and b) people start getting cold and hungry. Seeing the singletons try to process more of a “smorgasbord” of nakedness right off the bat would have been more fun to watch.

Not only that, but the participants are pretty much a parade of sameness, especially the guys. The women range a bit more in body type and personality — we’re especially rooting for computer engineering student Cassalei who was the most cautious of the bunch, but still willing to get naked for the show. It would be fascinating if there was a bigger breadth of body types and ages, wouldn’t it? Maybe in subsequent seasons there will be middle-aged and older people or people with a little more, um, “padding” in the cast. If it works for Survivor, it should be able to work for Naked And Afraid Of Love, shouldn’t it? That would be the real test of personality vs. looks.

Sex and Skin: Despite everyone being naked, this is one of the least sexy dating shows we’ve ever seen, mainly because seeing someone do push-ups with his blurred-out junk dangling perilously close to underbrush, or seeing people squatting over a fire doesn’t exactly do much for us in that department.

Parting Shot: Britt, who is super-outgoing, finds she’s attracted to Bennett, even though he’s a bit younger than she is. However, Bennett’s original partner Candice — a former Miss Hawaii — says “they’re not compatible. I’ll be patiently waiting for him. Maybe.”

Sleeper Star: We’re definitely rooting for both the aforementioned Crystal and Cassalei, who have the most “normal” personalities of the group.

Most Pilot-y Line: We wonder why in the world breasts and privates were blurred out when the show airs on a streaming service, not basic cable. They didn’t blur out people’s tushes, so why blur out everything else?

Our Call: STREAM IT. Once you get past the repetitive first episode, Naked And Afraid Of Love looks like it’ll be an interesting experiment. If there’s a second season, the producers should avoid the parent show’s format and just throw these naked people together in one big group.
