No items currently match the Smart Playlist rules

Hello -

When creating a new Smart Playlist in iTunes, I can’t seem to apply more than two rules without the Smart Playlist showing up empty, and a message in the iTunes window that says, “No items currently match the smart playlist rules” Click the Edit button to modify the rules”.

I have the playlist to match “all” of the rules I input, and it shows up fine with the first two rules, but after clicking the “+” and adding more rules — even just one — I hit OK, and it’s right back to the empty window with that message.

For what it’s worth, the first rule is to match “Media Kind” “is” “Home Video”. The added rules are set to match a “Name”. The weird thing is I have two other Smart Playlists with similar criteria, and they work fine.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Here's my "problem" smart playlist. As I mentioned in my original post, I have

a couple of other smart playlists with similar criteria, and they all show up fine.

Well, if you had a Home Video named "Introductory Beginner Intermediate Advanced Expert," it would be in there!

You need to nest the last 5 rules. Try this instead:

No items currently match the Smart Playlist rules

You can create a Smart Playlist that automatically organises songs into playlists based on criteria you specify. Whenever you add items to your music library that meet the criteria of a Smart Playlist, the Smart Playlist is automatically updated to include them.

For example, you could create a Smart Playlist that includes your most highly rated rock songs that were released before 1990 or after 2000. When you import songs from a CD, they’re automatically added to the Smart Playlist if they meet the criteria.

Create a Smart Playlist

  1. In the Music app

No items currently match the Smart Playlist rules
on your Mac, choose File > New > Smart Playlist.

  2. Specify the criteria.

    • Set the first rule: Click the first pop-up menu, choose an option (such as Genre, Love or Year), then complete the rule using the other available menus or fields (they vary depending on your choice in the first pop-up menu).

For example, to include rock songs, choose “Genre” from the first pop-up menu and “contains” from the second one, then type “Rock” in the text field. Any rock song is automatically included.

    • Add or remove rules: To set additional rules, click the Add button

    • Set the scope of multiple rules: If you have at least two rules, a pop-up menu appears at the top of the Smart Playlist dialogue that lets you choose whether an item must meet any or all of the criteria to be included in the Smart Playlist.

  3. For additional control over the Smart Playlist, set any of the following options:

    • Limits: To limit the size and contents of the Smart Playlist, select the Limit tick box and choose options. For example, limit the Smart Playlist to 2 hours with songs that were most recently added.

    • Match only checked items: Select the “Match only checked items” tick box to include only items that have a tick next to them in the library. See Prevent a song from playing.

    • Live updating: Select the “Live updating” tick box to have Music update this Smart Playlist as items in your library are added, removed or changed.

  4. Click OK.

Your new Smart Playlist appears with your other playlists in the sidebar. Whenever you select your Smart Playlist in the sidebar, items that match its criteria are listed.

  5. At the top of the main window, enter a name for the Smart Playlist.

Edit Smart Playlists

You can’t add or remove items directly from a Smart Playlist. To change which items are included in the playlist, you must change its criteria.

  1. In the Music app

No items currently match the Smart Playlist rules
on your Mac, select a Smart Playlist in the sidebar.

Note: If you want to change the order of the items in a Smart Playlist, choose View > Sort By. When you choose View > Sort By > Playlist Order, you can drag items into the order you want.

  2. Click Edit Rules, then change, add or remove rules or controls.

  3. Click OK.

Rename Smart Playlists

  1. In the Music app

No items currently match the Smart Playlist rules
on your Mac, select a Smart Playlist in the sidebar.

  2. Select the Smart Playlist name at the top of the window, then enter the new name.

Delete Smart Playlists

  • In the Music app

No items currently match the Smart Playlist rules
on your Mac, select a Smart Playlist in the sidebar, then press the Delete key.

Only the Smart Playlist is deleted; items that were included in the Smart Playlist remain in your music library and on your computer.

How do I refresh my smart playlist?

However, there is a relatively simple way to accomplish this: Go to your Smart Playlist that you want to refresh, select all of the tracks in that playlist, and hit the “Delete” key. These tracks will be removed from the playlist (not your iTunes library), and replaced with a new random selection.

How do I refresh a smart playlist in iTunes?

You can refresh the content of a smart playlist by selecting all and pressing delete. Tracks aren't removed from the library, but a random selection would be updated, for example. Check the rules of the smart playlist to make sure that automatic updating is enabled.

Why is it not letting me share my playlist on Apple Music?

If your playlist contains songs from your local files only, you won't be able to share it until you sync the playlist with the Apple Cloud Music Library. Turn on the "Sync Library" function on your iPhone or iPad to do it.

What is the difference between a playlist and a smart playlist?

Standard playlists are lists of music that you create manually by placing specific songs in the playlist. Smart playlists are created by iTunes based on criteria you select. Genius playlists are created based on songs that “go with” a song you designate.
