Note: This article will include spoilers just by virtue of the subject matter. People who despise spoilers are advised to leave now.

With that out of the way, it's worth mentioning that season 6 of the anime is expected to cover chapters 258 to 306 of the official My Hero Academia manga.

With everything going on in the world, it’s nice to be able to look forward to something! The release for season 6 of My Hero Academia is set for this October of 2022. If you’re like me you’re thinking that’s still pretty far off. But it’s really only 3 months away! Let’s take a quick look at what happened last season before we go into our expectations for season 6.

Main Points of Last Season

• Lots of Endeavor family drama. Endeavor is finally having some self-awareness of what a colossal jerk he has been and trying to slowly make amends with his kids and wife. This drama is sure to carry into the next season.

• Quirk upgrades for our favorite student heroes. Midoriya gets a new quirk, Black Whip, which has lots of potential. Todoroki has gained even more control over his fire, Tokoyami can fly, Ida can run even faster, and my boy Shinso has a cool new voice modulator mask.

• Midoriya learns even more about One for All through a dream with the Vestiges.

• Midoriya, Bokugo, and Todoroki start an internship with Endeavor

• Aizawa (Eraser Head) and Yamada (Present Mic) find out their childhood friend was turned into the villain known as Kurogiri, a nomu, and revealed that the League of Villains is associated with a “hospital”. The whole episode was rather heartbreaking.

• Hawks’ time as a spy pays off as he discovers the Meta Liberation Army’s plan to attack and he passes on the information to Endeavor. This is also when it’s revealed that the internships the students are going through is a prep for sending them to war should they need them. Yikes!

• The last part of season 5 focuses on ‘My Villian Academia’ and we get to see how the League of Villains is progressing. In order to gain the loyalty of Dr. Daruma (the creator of the Nomus) Shigaraki is forced to fight All ForOne’s most loyal minion- Gigantomachia.

• After coming to a standstill against Gigantomachia, the League is approached by the Meta Liberation Army who wants to lure them into a trap. Shigaraki decides to meet them in a town and lure Gigantomachia in to pit them against each other.

• When the League of Villains and the Meta Liberation Army square off against each other, many League members experience quirk evolution. Toga can now duplicate quirks as well as their appearance; Twice overcame trauma to be able to duplicate himself seeming without end, and Shigaraki found he could destroy things through a chain reaction rather than having to directly touch them.

• During the battle with Re-Destro, the leader of the Meta Liberation Army, Shigaraki remembers his past and we are given the most insane episodes of the season. There aren’t that many times I’ve yelled at the TV when I’m watching, but that was one of them.

• Shigaraki breaks through his limits and becomes plus ultra-powerful during his battle with Re-Destro. Re-Destro admits defeat and bows before Shigaraki, as does Gigantomachia.

• The League of Villains and Meta Liberation Army join forces and become the Paranormal Liberation Front.

• Shigaraki goes to Dr. Daruma to get All For One’s quirk injected into him.

• We end season 5 looking at our precious students lined up to face off against an army of villains.

 What’s Next?

The official trailer for season 6 has already dropped and it sets us up to expect lots of action and heavy drama. This is the season that manga readers have been telling anime watchers to prepare their hearts for, and as we have watched the anime get progressively more and more serious, it may be that we could even see some characters die.

We can be sure the soap opera that is Endeavor’s family life will continue. How will the relationship between him and his kids’ progress? Will we find out more about the son he lost, Toya?

Midoriya has been working hard to make use of his new quirk Black Whip and we can look forward to him leveling up even more through the coming battles. From past pacing experience, I think we can expect to see at least one new quirk this season.

Epic destruction from our villains is on the horizon. We last saw Shigaraki going to Dr. Daruma to receive All for One’s quirk, which if successful, would allow him to steal other people’s quirks. Combined with his new ability to destroy things without even coming into physical contact with them, he has become a true threat level S villain.

With all of the developments within the last few episodes of season 5, we can be sure My Hero Academia season 6 is going to be taking a darker turn. As much as I enjoy watching the action and development of quirks, I will also be preparing my heart and Kleenex for what I’m sure is going to be a roller coaster of a season. Let’s cheer on our heroes as they fight for their goals! Plus Ultra!
