Royal organic sona masoori rice review

I usually buy a Calrose-type rice but Costco had this stuff on sale for $12 for a 20 pound sack, compared to $21 for Royal Basmati or $22 for Kokuho Rose. The non-sale price for the Sona Masoori is $18. So if you want to try it, get yourself down to Costco (and bring a friend with a membership if you don't have one. Offer to buy them a hot dog.) and skip the overpriced Amazon resellers. They're probably buying the stuff at Costco and jacking up the price.

Most varieties of white rice require 1 to 1-1/2 cups of water per cup of rice, but this stuff needs 2-1/2 cups of water per cup of rice! So keep in mind that one cup of this kind of rice will make almost twice as much cooked rice as other varieties, which makes the price an even better deal.

It seems to come out mushier than other kinds of rice, more like an instant rice, but with better flavor. I tried making it with only 1-1/2 cups of water, but it didn't cook correctly and I ended up with hard, inedible grains, so I guess it really does need that 2-1/2 cups of liquid.

When prepared with oil and salt (and I like to add a wee pinch of MSG), the taste is perfectly acceptable, I just don't really care for the soft texture. I prefer a stickier Japanese-style rice. But that's my personal opinion, if you're used to Uncle Ben's or other instant-type rices, you'll probably be pleased as punch with it.

As much liquid as it can absorb, it should be great for drying things out (damp electronics, for instance).
