In my humble opinion, Dyson stick vacuums are the apotheoses of the form. They’re light, powerful, convenient, useful, and beautiful. Still, for a household item that gets so much use, I wish they were a little sturdier. After several years, I blew out the motor on the Dyson V7. Two years later, I dropped my precious V11, which cracked the case. Oh, and I accidentally fried the circuit board while rinsing off the washable filter.

Rather than investing in another Dyson destined to break my heart, I decided to investigate the Shark line, widely touted as the Dyson killer. Shark is the most popular vacuum brand in America, and its vacuums have received top marks for reliability and relative affordability.

The Dyson effect—making ordinary household products premium and desirable—is very real. However, not only do Dyson products perform well, they’re also attractive and have design details that make them overall more enjoyable and easier to use. If you're as ham-handed with your electronics as I am, you will probably want to get a Shark. Otherwise, stick with a Dyson.

Hard to Handle

Dyson reviews—including my own—mostly pay attention to the vacuum’s appearance and power. It took switching to a different stick vac for me to realize some of Dyson’s perks.

For example, a Dyson stick vac comes with a docking station. You can mount the vacuum in a closet or a corner of your kitchen. Once you’ve screwed the dock into the wall, the vacuum neatly clicks in and starts automatically recharging. It also conveniently stores all the different vacuum heads. To recharge Shark's Vertex, you have to plug a cord into the base of the vacuum and find a cardboard box to store the vacuum heads.

After I got the Vertex, I plugged the charger into an outlet in my dim hall closet. I rearranged some space, propped the vacuum skeptically against a wall, and shrugged. Then I fumbled around the floor for the cord, accidentally unplugged my router, found the right cord, and plugged the vacuum back in. It's not as elegant.

At a smidge over 9 pounds, it’s almost twice as heavy as its closest competitor, the Dyson V7. The brush head is much larger too, so it’s more difficult to quickly maneuver it in small rooms. Finally, it’s not as pretty as the Dyson and just a little harder to use.

For example, the brush head has a footprint marker on it. (I realized after a while it's to put your foot on it to unlock the brush head.) The Dyson doesn't need you to put your foot on it for any reason, nor does it need such a marker.

Keep Your Powder Dry

As its name implies, the Vertex DuoClean has two modes—one for hard surfaces and one for soft ones. When you turn the brush head over, you’ll see a soft roller for constant contact with the floor and a self-cleaning brush roll mounted with PowerFins, polyester-and-silicone rubber wipers that dig into the carpet for better cleaning power.

On paper, the Vertex has much more going for it than a V7. It has more features, like a bendable tube for getting under sofas and beds. Not to mention it runs for around an hour, which is longer than the V7’s measly 30 minutes. (Of course, run time matters less when you can simply plop the V7 right back into its charging holster rather than scrabbling around your closet floor for the wire.)

The Shark Vertex Pro (IZ682H) is a powerful stick vacuum that’s designed to run as a cordless stick or a handheld, with a wide assortment of tools and cleaning attachments. It’s fairly lightweight, very easy to maneuver, and has impressive overall battery performance. It succeeds our favorite from last year, the Shark Vertex Lightweight Cordless Stick, but it now adds fantastic performance on bare floors and does a great job picking debris on high-pile carpets.

Building on its predecessor’s best features, Shark added some worthwhile features on the Pro that easily redefine what we demand from a stick vacuum. For instance, the Vertex Pro features a digital display that delivers an upgraded cleaning experience, in addition to more suction power and a larger dustbin bin. Also, it’s now lighter in weight, without feeling cheap and flimsy.

So, are these upgrades worth it? Let’s find out in this Shark IZ682H Vertex Pro Review.

About the Shark IZ682H Vertex Pro

The Shark Vertex Pro is a lightweight cordless stick vacuum, and is so far Shark’s premium cordless vacuum offering. It’s different from the company’s other cordless models, offering the most powerful suction and the longest runtime (up to 60 minutes) and DuoClean technology. Shark’s other vacuums offer between 40 and 60 minutes on a single charge.

Getting the Shark Vertex Pro set up and running out of the box is pretty straightforward. Once you unwrap everything, the floorhead, multi-flex wand, and handvac all click into place, all you have to do is charge it.

Shark Vertex Pro Specs

  • Maximum power: 309 watts
  • Dust capacity: 1qt.
  • Cordless: Yes
  • Runtime: Up to 60 minutes
  • Cleaning path width: 10.63in.
  • Dimensions: 10.24″ L X 14.7″ W X 46.5″ H
  • Weight: 8.82lb.
  • Filter: Washable HEPA, Foam and Felt
  • Attachments: Crevice tool, Anti-Allergen Dust brush and pet multi-tool

One of the standout features of the Vertex Pro is the swing-style mechanism for Multi-Flex design, it folds in half for easy and compact storage that doesn’t necessarily need a designated charging hub, and it easily stores on its own. Well, it doesn’t quite stand upright, which is typical with stick vacuums, but it still doesn’t need a place to prop it up.

The battery is easy to remove and you can charge it on your kitchen counter or wherever you’d like to leave the vacuum to charge. If you need to clean for long sessions and don’t need to stop in between, you can purchase an additional battery.

What We Like

It has powerful suction and cleaning

The Shark Z682H is, without a doubt, one of the company’s most powerful stick vacuums, all thanks to the hypervelocity accelerated suction and DuoClean PowerFins that makes all Shark Vertex models better than the competition. The PowerFins technology features two rollers that suck up dirt and dust thereby maximizing floor contact for continuous cleaning. In fact, it’s like having two vacuums in one, and it sucks twice as much debris on one pass-through.

The DuoClean PowerFins work synchronously, with the soft rollers picking up small debris and dust while the silicone PowerFins dive deep into carpets and directly scour the floor for better hair pickup, much better than vacs with standard bristles.

Flexible and Easy to Use

Shard’s vacuums are always efficient when it comes to managing hair wrap within the brushes. The Vertex Pro leads the pack with a self-cleaning brushroll that ensures that human and pet hair don’t get entangled or wrapped in the rollers and reduces suction power.

The addition of multi-flex technology makes this vac even more versatile to use in almost all spaces at home, with the same versatility as a lift-away vacuum like the Shark NV360 we reviewed a few weeks ago.

Shark vertex duoclean powerfins lightweight cordless stick vacuum reviews

This technology allows you to contort the vacuum in different positions to reach hard-to-reach areas. For instance, you can flex it up to a 90-degree angle, so you can reach low areas without having to bend over, and the same allows the vacuum to fold in half for compact storage.

IQ Display and lots of extra features

The Shark Vertex Pro comes with a display screen that showcases battery percentage level and indicates the suction level and floor type, which you can select via two buttons on either side of the power button. You can toggle between three modes: ECO mode for maximum run time, Deep Clean mode for increased power and optimized runtime, and Boost mode for maximum suction.

Other impressive features of the Vertex Pro include ant-allergen complete seal technology that traps allergens in contact with its HEPA Filtration system, and this technology doesn’t push irritants back into the air. The brush rolls continuously rotate to ensure air is only sucked in one direction.

Also, it includes a variety of attachments to use with the handheld, including a crevice tool, and a pet multi-tool that cleans stuck-on debris and removes pet hair from upholstery. However, it doesn’t include any accessory for storage or sack.

What we Don’t Like

No brushroll on/off switch

The Shark Vertex Pro is impressively maneuverable, with a flexible wan2d that allows you to clean under tables and couches without bending over too deeply. It’s easy to maneuver between obstacles too and is easy to reconfigure into a handheld vacuum and attach all of the included accessories.

However, since it doesn’t have a brushroll on/off switch, it will occasionally get stuck on rugs and some tassels. Also, it doesn’t have automatic floor adjustment and suction power capabilities, but it still works finer than most vacuums in this price range.

Shark Vertex Pro Review | Verdict

The Shark Vertex Pro is a masterpiece when it comes to stick vacuums, offering splendid cleaning performance, super easy to use, and offers seamless maneuverability. It’s lightweight, even with a larger dustbin than its predecessor it doesn’t add any scary weight to the creative design. The compact storing is a neat feature for those short on space, or simply a fan of a clever design.

That said, Shark still lacks the technology from some vacuums we’ve reviewed before that can automatically adjust suction power depending on the surface type or debris type, so switching back and forth between is inconveniencing, knowing that technology exists at slightly comparable prices. However, we do appreciate the continuous suction power and ease of use, as well as the steps taken to seal in allergens.

If you’re looking for a reliable, powerful, and useful stick vacuum, the Shark Vertex Pro (IZ682H) is an excellent choice. It’s lightweight and has a bagless design and washable filters that keep costs down, and its battery performance is gorgeous overall.
