The U.S. summer box office is about to get an anime bump. Show
Sony’s Crunchyroll and Toei Animation revealed release details Tuesday for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the latest film in the blockbuster anime franchise. The film will open in North America on Aug. 19 in more than 2,300 theaters, including in select Imax cinemas. The first truly global theatrical release by Crunchyroll, Super Hero will also release in international markets throughout August and September, with Sony Pictures Entertainment partnering on the overseas rollout. After decades of ups and downs in international popularity, Japanese anime has crossed over into the global mainstream in recent years, becoming a powerfully bankable genre in both cinemas and on streaming platforms. The previous film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise, 2018’s Dragon Ball Super: Broly was made for just $8.5 million but earned $30 million in North America and over $120 million worldwide. Other anime hits have put up big performances despite the challenges of the pandemic box office — the biggest among them: Aniplex’s Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train, the period fantasy anime that earned $48 million in North America, $365 million in Japan and $504 million worldwide. Directed by Tetsuro Kodama and featuring an all-star Japanese voice cast, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was produced with the full participation of Dragon Ball’s original creator Akira Toriyama, with the legendary manga creator involved in the development of the film’s original story, screenplay and character design. Toriyama’s original Dragon Ball manga debuted in Japan in 1984 and has gone on to sell an astonishing 260 million copies worldwide. The property has spawned scores of adaptations spanning TV animation, movies, games and merchandising. The official synopsis of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero reads: “The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Son Goku. Individuals, who carry on its spirit, have created the ultimate Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two Androids call themselves ‘Super Heroes.’ They start attacking Piccolo and Gohan … What is the New Red Ribbon Army’s objective? In the face of approaching danger, it is time to awaken, Super Hero!” The film is being released in both subtitled and local-language dubbed versions. It is also the first Western release, marking Dragon Ball Heroes debut outside Japan after 8 years. It released in the United States on April 5, 2019. GameplayJust like the original Ultimate Mission series, Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission allows the player to use either the buttons and analog sticks or the touch screen to play the game as if it were the arcade version. Players can access missions that lead from the first Super Dragon Ball Heroes mission all up to Universe Mission 2. And just like the arcade version, World Mission uses a turn based card battle system in five rounds or less, which offers 7 on 7 battles with only one health bar for a team of characters. The cards featuring characters from the Dragon Ball franchise are given specific powers and abilities that allow for unique and strategic combat experiences. StoryThe mysterious figure inside the Time Abyss during the opening OVA cutsene in World Mission The game opens with a mysterious figure in the Time Abyss. At the Time Nest, Chronoa and Xeno Trunks witness a Wormhole open up and the figure who has a Galactic Patrol symbol on his chest exits. Chronoa recognizes him and orders Xeno Trunks to defend the Time Nest. Xeno Trunks goes Super Saiyan and fights an intruder but he counters and defeats Xeno Trunks using his staff knocking him down to the ground. However, the figure abruptly leaves through another wormhole. Chronoa reveals that the figure is dangerous and suggests he is planning something. In Hero Town, a young human boy watches a Super Dragon Ball Heroes tournament match via a large screen in the city plaza. Excited by the match, the boy goes to the stadium to watch matches live and learns they are holding exhibition matches where anyone can participate. Though completely new to the game, he decides to enter and speaks to the receptionist. She asks for his name and Hero Avatar (these can be selected by the player, though he is Beat in promotional material). As he is a new player, she provides his choice of cards to use. After selecting his cards, he fights his first match and wins which causes him to have a strange sensation in which he brushes off as excitement. Unbeknownst to Beat, a man wearing a high-tech Great Saiyaman Suit has been observing him and decides to test him by challenging Beat to a battle. The man introduces himself as Great Saiyaman 3 whom is quite famous based on comments made by members of the audience. After Beat manages to defeat Great Saiyaman 3, their conversation is interrupted by a commotion outside and Great Saiyaman 3 rushes off to investigate. Beat follows after him and outside finds Cooler. He and the other bystanders assume it is just a really good Cooler cosplayer but Great Saiyaman 3 reveals it is the real deal. Cooler attacks Beat with a Ki Blast but Beat manages to block it by guarding to both his and Great Saiyaman 3's surprise. Great Saiyaman 3 unsheathes his sword and destroys Cooler with a Burning Slash to prevent him from hurting Beat. The other bystanders assume it was a show and Great Saiyaman 3 takes Beat somewhere private to talk. Great Saiyaman 3 reveals that someone he refers to as the Menace has been causing anomalies in the game which if left unchecked can allow characters like Cooler to enter the real world. Great Saiyaman 3 reveals he is recruiting players to help investigate and fix the anomalies. He then asks Beat to join his team, the Dragon Ball Heroes, which Beat accepts. Great Saiyaman 3 directs Beat to the Hero Lab and leaves. Beat goes to the location and finds a place called Hero Tower. There he encounters two security guards that resemble Nappa named Kang and Kong. They explain that the Hero Lab is top secret and show him to it. There Beat encounters a girl named Note who is revealed to have been recruited by Great Saiyaman 3 though she refers to him simply as Master and explains it is short for Hero Master which is a nickname for him created by the locals which was shortened further to just Master as Great Saiyaman 3 is too long to say. Great Saiyaman 3 appears and explains that Beat and Note will be working together. He gives them bracelet like devices called Hero Switches which he explains will allow them to enter the game world. Due to Beat being a novice, Note wants to battle with him despite their Master's objections, explaining that it would be a good chance to bond and get to know each other. Great Saiyaman 3 agrees and has the two use the Hero Switches to enter the game world. In the game world, Beat and Note take on the appearance of their Hero Avatars (Beat's selected default Avatar Race is a Male Saiyan specifically the Hero type by default though the player can choose a different race at the beginning and once they become available he can switch to an Elite and Berserker type avatars within their selected race as they are initially locked). Note's Avatar is revealed to be a Female Saiyan Hero and they both find themselves in Gizard Wasteland. Great Saiyaman 3 contacts them and explains they are on Earth around the time of the fight with Raditz. Both they journey further, Note challenges Beat to a match which Beat eagerly accepts. After beating Note and her team, Note however rallies and attacks Beat. Great Saiyaman 3 notes her tenacity, however Beat gets more excited and the two have another round. Beat wins again, but notices Note is recovering from the fight revealing that fighting in the game world is like fighting in the real world as they can feel pain and fatigue. However Note soon recovers and the two continue onward to begin their investigation. As they go to where Great Saiyaman 3 directs them to, they find nothing at first but suddenly dark clouds fill the sky which they report to their Master. The clouds turn out to be an indication of an anomaly. Eventually Vegeta and Nappa appear which Great Saiyaman 3 reveals is too early as it is currently Age 761. Vegeta and Nappa are soon joined by Raditz who is revealed to have narrowly avoided his death. Additionally Turles is also present. Vegeta and Nappa criticize Raditz for his weakness, though Turles suggests that they not spoil their recent reunion of Saiyan survivors. The Saiyans decide to fight Beat and Note as Kakarot is a no show. Beat (or Note as she can be selected as a playable ally) defeat the Saiyans, however Vegeta is still standing and reveals he's been holding back. However instead of turning into a Great Ape, he ascends past Super Saiyan and Super 2 to Super Saiyan 3. Great Saiyaman 3, Beat, and Note are shocked by this development which they conclude is the result of the anomaly. Vegeta himself suggests he had previously acquired Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 before achieving Super Saiyan 3. This leads to a fight against Super Saiyan 3 Prince Vegeta. However despite his strength, Beat and Note prevail, while Goku and the Z Fighters arrive to back them up. This unlocks a dimensional distortion which Beat and Note can enter in order to further explore and resolve the anomaly. Deeper with the anomaly Nappa and Raditz return to assist Vegeta. The two end up ascending beyond Super Saiyan to their Super Saiyan 3 forms. This leads Beat and Note to face off against three Super Saiyan 3s and an army of Saibamen. Eventually they defeat the Nappa and Raditz who revert to base along with Vegeta. Goku joins the fight, though Vegeta creates a Power Ball which transforms Raditz into a Great Ape causing Goku to realize he himself was the Great Ape that killed his adoptive grandfather. During the battle, Vegeta transforms into his Great Ape form during Round 2 though it is possible to defeat him in Round 1. Defeating Great Ape Vegeta fixes the anomaly and Goku thanks them for their help. Beat and Note are both ecstatic due to getting to meet Goku, Vegeta, and the others as well as over their victory over the Saiyans. Timeline placementThis game takes place in a timeline unconnected to Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission or Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X as Beat is a new player who has just moved to Hero Town. The game takes place some time after Xeno Trunks' brief battle with Sealas in the Time Nest shown in the game's animated opening cutscene. The Time Patrol and the Dark Empire appear to come from the end of an alternate version of the Dark Empire Saga; they have already encountered the Dark Dragon Ball Warriors, but Mechikabura does not have access to his own timeline's Dark Dragon Balls and is still seeking to regain his youth. It is implied that the Prison Planet Saga does not take place in this timeline, as Beat and Note have no knowledge of Cumber and Fu, the latter of which making no appearance. ReceptionSuper Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission received "mixed or average" reviews on Metacritic, getting a metascore of 72/100 on PC[2] and 69/100 on Nintendo Switch. Despite the impressive attempt at the story, fans spoke out on how repetitive the gameplay is, how the story loses itself from time to time and how the game can only be enjoyed by those who are truly appealed to it. Despite this, others have gone out and said that despite its flaws, World Mission is still a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone and has been deemed as "well worth the years-long wait". Trivia
