India, the most successful side in the ICC U-19 World Cup has been led by some great players. Here's a list of the most renowned Indian U-19 captains.

India's U-19 cricket team has given the nation plethora of stars. The likes of Virat Kohli, Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik, are just some of the names that played at the U-19 World Cup. India has won the U-19 World Cup a record four times and as the Indian colts eye an unprecedented fifth World Cup title in West Indies here we take a look at some of the most renowned captains of the U-19 team down the years:

India U-19 take on Bangladesh U-19 in the final of 2020 U-19 World Cup on Sunday. Unlike the past tournaments, the captain of the side -Priyam Garg - hasn’t got enough chances as the top-order batsmen have done the job on almost every occasion. India haven't lost a wicket in three out of their last five matches and would hope to continue the domination in the summit clash as well.

Despite Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliance in the tournament so far, it’s Priyam Garg who is the face of this team and will become the fifth captain to lead India U-19 to a title victory should Boys in Blue overpower Bangladesh. Being the captain, all eyes are on Garg and his career will be followed quite closely in the years come. A couple of days before Garg leads India U-19 in the final, Times Now has a look at India’s former World Cup-winning captains and see how they have fared in their careers:

Mohammad Kaif

The first U-19 captain World Cup-winning captain to play international cricket, Kaif played two junior World Cups - one as a captain. Just a month after leading India U-19 to a title victory, Kaif made his Test debut against South Africa. Two years later, he donned maiden ODI cap against England in Kanpur.

Kaif rose to fame when he and his under-19 teammate Yuvraj Singh propelled India to a historic chase in the Natwest Series final against England at Lords in 2002. Exactly 16 years later, he quit the game. Kaif is also remembered as one of the finest Indian fielders ever.

Kaif is now a full-time coach and cricket expert. He is presently associated with Delhi Capitals as their assistant coach and is often seen commentating during international matches. Kaif played 13 Tests and 125 ODIs.

Virat Kohli

Before making it big at the international level, the Delhi cricketer showed his captaincy skills in junior cricket. Under him, India U-19 team ended the eight-year drought by defeating South Africa in a rain-marred final in 2008. Kohli made his ODI debut in less than six months after the triumph but he wasn’t rated as highly as Rohit Sharma.

It took him nearly four years to establish himself as the backbone of the team. In 2012, he was named MS Dhoni’s deputy in white-ball cricket and in 2014, he took over as the captain across formats. A cult figure at the international level, Kohli is regarded as the greatest batsman of this generation.

The only batsman to average above 50 across all formats, Kohli is just seven centuries away from becoming the first player to score half-century of centuries in ODIs. In 2018, he became the quickest batsman to score 10000 runs in ODIs and in 2019, the India captain leapfrogged Tendulkar and Brian Lara to become the quickest batsman to score 20000 runs at international level.

Unmukt Chand

The selection committee saw a future captain in Chand and he was India A’s regular captain until 2015. Chand made it to the 30-member squads for ICC Champions Trophy 2013 and T20 World Cup 2014 but hasn't earned a national call-up yet.

Chand’s stocks have fallen of late as he was dropped from his state team in 2017 and became an irregular member of the side. Ahead of 2019/20 season, he switched to Uttarakhand but the move hasn’t been a successful one. Chand was recently dropped from the Ranji Trophy squad after he managed just 195 runs in 14 innings. He was on commentary duties during the India-Pakistan semi-final contest in U19 World Cup.

Prithvi Shaw

Tipped to be the next Sachin Tendulkar, Prithvi Shaw had scored centuries on his Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy debuts even before he played the U-19 World Cup. The right-handed batsman was already a star in the making and he was called up to the Test squad just six months after the title triumph.

Shaw kicked off his Test career with a century against West Indies and bagged Player of the Series award with 237 runs in two Test matches. However, he missed out on playing international cricket for more than a year due to various reasons.

Shaw missed the Australia Test series due to an ankle injury. In July 2019, he was banned for eight months for a doping violation. He seems to have moved on from those struggles as Shaw is already back in the Test side and made his ODI debut against New Zealand earlier this week.
