The legendary variant of Amazing Spider-Man #667 is a relatively rare comic book, especially by modern age standards. Show
There are 48 in the census, including 18 in CGC 9.8 and 17 in CGC 9.6. The scarcity, along with the huge demand for both modern variants and Amazing Spider-Man comic books, drives the prices of this book up. They are seldom offered, and when they do change hands, prices are unpredictable. The most recent sale was $15,000, significantly lower than the record set in February. This might be Coronavirus price fluctuations. Time will tell. Here are the most recent sales in different grades:
2) Walking Dead #1, CGC 9.9The Walking Dead #1 (October 2003): Record sale: $20,000 (CGC 9.9); Check eBay Values | Have Yours Appraised Read our price guide to What's happened to prices of Walking Dead #1? Prices of this comic book continue to fall, as the series has run its course. Rumor of a movie don't seem to help. Whoever paid $20K for the 9.9 is going to with they had not. A year ago, 9.8s were selling for over $2,000. Two years ago nearly $3,000. There is only one way this book has to go... Down. 3) Edge of Spider-Verse #2: Gwen Stacy Becomes Spider-Woman. Retailer Incentive EditionEdge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014): Record sale: $6,000 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued Another Spider-Woman comic book has become red-hot. This popular variant cover has taken off and sets new records regularly. With 454 in the census -- half of them CGC 9.8 and a single 9.9 -- this is not a rare comic book, and I suspect the future price for this issue will fall once the movie hype is over. 4) Spider-Man Collectible Classics #1: So-Called 'Chromium' Edition of Amazing Spider-Man #300Marvel Collectible Classics: Record sale: $13,500 (CGC 9.9); Minimum value: $60 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued Value of Amazing Spider-Man Comics You sometimes see this listed as Amazing Spider-Man #300 Chromium edition. It's actually a 1998 reprint of the 1988 classic cover by Todd McFarlane, with shiny foil front and back cover images. #2 is also lower down this list. 5) Spawn #1 CGC 9.9Spawn #1 (1992) Record sale: $5,100 (CGC 9.9); Minimum value: $20 Find a copy on Ebay | Have yours valued Here's where things get really silly. Millions of copies of Spawn #1 were printed. There are 6 copies in the CGC census graded 10.0. SIX! A further 66 are graded 9.9! (And seven more Signature Series 9.9s.) That's ridiculous. 9.9s and 10.0s are really rare, and this book has over 70 copies (so far) in those top tier grades. Nearly 6,000 are graded 9.8, and another 2,300 Signature Series 9.8s. Some deluded, unwise soul paid almost $5K for a 9.9. That's not even the highest grade assigned to this book. Remember, there are six copies graded 10.0! Yes. Spawn is more popular now than ever. Several Spawn books appear on the Top 100 Most Valuable Comic Books of the Modern Age. But be smart. A 9.9 of Spawn #1 is nothing special. Do your research. Don't put $5K into a 1992 book where there are another 70+ copies in that grade. There are better things to do with money than burn it. This should not be one of the most valuable comic books of this era. 6) Elseworlds 80-Page Giant #1, CGC 10.0Elseworlds 80-Page Giant #1 Record sale: $4,870 (CGC 10.0); Minimum value: $80 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued Again, the huge 10.0 sale distorts this book's place on the list, but as 9.8s are selling for over $700, it justifies its place here. 7) Spawn #185 Sketch VariantSpawn #185 (2008): Record sale: $3,800 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued Another Spawn cover claims a top spot. With only 19 copies of this book in the census, you have to see why it's worth so much money. No telling of course how many more raw copies there are in the wild. 8) Amazing Spider-man 678 Quinones MJ Venom VariantAmazing Spider-Man #678 (2012): Record sale: $6,800 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued A huge trend in the comic book collecting world is female Spider-Man variations. MJ as Venom? A slam-dunk no-brainer. 9) Wolverine #1 (2010) J. Scott Campbell Deadpool VariantWolverine #1 (2010): Record sale: $6,500 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued Deadpool. Wolverine. J. Scott Campbell. Need I say more? 10) Danger Girl #2 Ruby Red Smoking Gun VariantDanger Girl #2 (1998): Record sale: $5,400 Check eBay Values | Have Yours Appraised There are just 30 copies of this most valuable comic books in the CGC census. Imagine if it featured Venom, a female Spider-Man, or Deadpool? It would surely be higher up the list. I believe it's "only" valuable because it's rare, and variant collectors want to own a copy no matter what the cost. Danger Girl is not a title that strikes me as long-lasting. 11) Batman #608 Retailer Appreciation VariantBatman #608 (2002): Retailer appreciation variant cover Record sale: $5,500 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued Read our Batman Comic Book Guide This is a very early modern variant cover, and deserves its place on the most valuable comic books of the modern age list. What would follow would become commonplace. A retailer special thank-you comic for ordering a certain number of copies of the regular edition. There are 227 of this issue in the census. So it's not really rare at all. But completists will want one, along with variant collectors. 12) Siege #2 J. Scott Campbell Deadpool VariantSiege #3 (2010): J. Scott Campbell Variant Record sale: $4,960 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued Read our Deadpool Comics price guide Another popular Deadpool comic variant by Campbell. 13) Captain Marvel #14, 1st Kamala Kahn, Variant CoverCaptain Marvel #14 (2013) Record sale: $3,000 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued When Captain Marvel was a thing, before THAT movie... This was one of the hottest books on the planet. It's still popular, and Kamala isn't going away anytime soon. 14) Captain Marvel #17 2nd Printing, 1st Kamala KahnCaptain Marvel #17 (2013) Record sale: $2,900 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued Another "first" appearance. Confusingly three issues later than the previous one. Again, prices have been higher in the past -- now coming back down to earth thanks to the movie being old news. Will this still be on the most valuable comic books list next year? 15) Spawn #1 Error (Missing Black Ink)Spawn #1 (1992): Record sale: $5,100 Check eBay Values | Have yours valued Significantly rarer than a 9.9 or 10.0, the manufacturing error is given a green label by CGC for some reason. CGC needs to get its act together about things like this. For example, Fantastic Four #110 exists with a green printing error. It's labeled as such on a universal label. Why is Spawn #1 qualified, while FF #110 is universal? If there was any justice, then this book would be worth much more than a boring 9.9 of the regular edition. I know which I would rather own. 16) Batman Adventures #12, 1st Harley QuinnBatman Adventures #12 (1993) Record sale: $3,450 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued This book has been on a rollercoaster ride for years. First, it rocketed to almost $3K on the news that Harley would be in a movie. Then the typical post-movie crash followed. Now it's rising again. Most recent sale is a shade over $2,000. It's a much scarcer book than other keys from the period, with under 6,000 universal copies in the census. 17) Walking Dead #100: 1st Appearance of NeganWalking Dead #100 (2012) Record sale: $3,000 (CGC 10.0); Minimum value: $1 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued Another book which has only one way to go. The record was set by a one-off fluke 10.0. 18) Saga #1 Retailer Incentive VariantSaga #1 (2012): Record sale: $4,000 Check eBay Values | Have Yours Appraised This book has been higher on the most valuable comic books list in the past. A Saga movie or series would rocket this into the stratosphere again. 19) The Maxx Ashcan, Yellow EditionThe Maxx Ashcan (1993): Record sale: $2,100 Check eBay Values | Have Yours Appraised The 1990s implosion period saw a bunch of weird, long-forgotten titles come and go. The Maxx is one such title. These ashcan editions have been very hot in the past, but I can't see that trend returning. Nobody cares. Some. of the sales data has been removed from the census. I considered deleting this book altogether, but for this year it will stay, pending more research. 20) Chew #1, CGC 10.0Chew #1 (October 2003): Record sale: $2,000 (CGC 10.0); Minimum value: $40 Check eBay Values | Have Yours Appraised The spin-off from Walking Dead has enjoyed a period of hot speculation. Since then, it's calmed down. Chew has long been mooted as a series or movie subject, but no dice so far. The fluke 10.0 set the record. 21) X-23 volume 3 #1, Dell'Otto Variant CoverX-23 v3 #1 (2010) Record sale: $3,000 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued Wolverine's daughter and a Dell'Otto variant. Say no more! 22) Collectible Classics: Spider-Man #2Marvel Collectible Classics: Spider-Man #2 (1998) Record sale: $2,250 (CGC 9.9); Minimum value: $250 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued This book has recently taken off, after years languishing behind #1 (see #4 on this list). It reprints Spider-Man #1 from 1990, the classic Todd McFarlane cover. 23) The Walking Dead #27, CGC 9.9Walking Dead #27 (2006) Record sale: $1,800 (CGC 9.9); Minimum value: $50 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued The huge disparity between "mint" 9.8s and the uber-rare 9.9s and 10.0s is shown here again with this crazy sale. Not one of the most valuable comic books on merit. 24) Vengeance of Bane Special #1, CGC 9.9Vengeance of Bane Special (1993) Record sale: $5,750 (CGC 9.9); Minimum value: $40 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued Bane was the antagonist in The Dark Knight Rises, and a fine movie it was too. I can't see this record being beaten, as the character is unlikely to star in another movie, which is the prime motivator to drive the most valuable comic books higher. 25) Invincibles #1: 1st Mark Grayson / InvincibleInvincible #1 (2003) Record sale: $6,200 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued The Grayson clan continues to thrive in the DCU, and the price of this book has rocketed lately. Is a movie imminent? 26) What If vol 2 #105, 1st Spider-Girl (Mary Parker)What If? v2 #105 (1998) Record sale: $1,390 Minimum value: $60 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued Female Spider characters are huge this year. The offspring of Peter Parker is a no-brainer for a movie appearance. This sale may be a one-off, but there is support for the book around $500. Perhaps somebody got too excited and pulled the trigger on an over-priced buy it now instead of doing their due diligence. Oops. Important Note on Most Valuable Modern Comic BooksSome readers have expressed annoyance at variant covers appearing on this list. We also have agonized about whether CGC 9.9 or CGC 10.0 sales should "count". On balance, we feel that anything goes is the safest way to proceed. In the future, we may revise that stance and keep variant covers out of this top 100 most valuable comic books. Publishers are creating a market by allowing variant covers to exist, and there is obvious demand for them among collectors and/or speculators. No list of the most valuable comic books of the modern age is really complete without Saga #1 retailer incentive, or Batman #608 incentive, or Mary-Jane Watson as Venom. The list is more interesting as a result, and so our editorial decision is final. Just Want to Read About the Most Valuable Variant Editions? 27) League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #5 RecalledLeague of Extraordinary Gentlemen #5 (2000): Recalled Edition Record sale: $1,259 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued A fake ad for a Marvel Douche led to lawyers worrying about potential lawsuits, so DC had to recall the first print run. Some survived, of course. There are 112 in the census, so far... 28) Spider-Gwen #1, Adam Hughes VariantSpider-Gwen #1 (2015) Record sale: $1,500 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued More Spider girls to satisfy the fan boys and a slam-dunk most valuable comic book.. It's not even the hotter of the two first appearance issues. 34) Strangers in Paradise #1Strangers in Paradise #1 (1993) Record sale: $1,300 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued A scarce comic book that deserves its place here on the most valuable comic books list in CGC 9.8. 35) Deadpool #1, CGC 9.9Deadpool #1 (1993) Record sale: $1,250 (CGC 9.9); Minimum value: $20 Find a copy on eBay | Have yours valued Super-common book which has a few fluke 9.9s out there. It's notoriously tough in high grade, due to the tendency for these common books to be dropped into Dollar bins and left to rot. The cover shows fingerprints very easily too. Are comic books from the 80s and 90s worth anything?Today, roughly 90 to 95 percent of all the comic books published within this time period are worth just a fraction of their original cover price. Still, much like every other time period in comic book collecting, there are those few key issues that slipped through the cracks and became worth their weight in gold.
Will 90s comics ever be worth anything?Probably because old comics are more valuable the more rare they are. Collecting comics was pretty big in the 90s, so there are bunches of carefully preserved near-mint copies in existence of most issues of any major title (and lots of minor ones). As long as there is, they're not going to be worth anything.
How do I know if my comic book is worth money? The easiest way to determine if your comics fall into the “good” category is by looking at the cover price. Almost all comic books have the retail cover price at the time of publication on the cover. The valuable ones will have 10c, 12c, 15c, 20c, or 25c on the cover.
