What is a 4 digit CID number?

American Express Cards ALWAYS have a 4-digit, unembossed (flat) number printed ABOVE the account number. This number is called the Card Identification Number or CID (circled in green in the examples below).

Occasionally other 4-digit, embossed (raised) numbers appear below the account number; however, the CID is ALWAYS ABOVE the account number.

What is a Cardholder Verification Value?

The CVV2 is a layer of security to help ensure that the physical card is in the cardholder's possession while shopping online or by phone, helping to prevent unauthorized or fraudulent use.

Where can I find it?

The 3-digit code is located on the back of your card, inside the signature area. Typically the signature panel will have a series of numbers, but only the last three digits make up the CVV2 code.

What does it do?

It's actually more about what it prevents. When shopping online or over the phone, the 3-digit code helps merchants ensure that the card is in the right hands. Merchants will request the CVV2 at checkout from the cardholder, and the information is sent electronically to the card-issuing bank to verify its validity. Within seconds the CVV2 results are returned with authorization. If it's returned invalid, merchants have the right to stop the transaction.

And for your added protection, merchants are prohibited from keeping or storing the CVV2 number after the transaction has been completed.

What is the CID and WHERE is it?

The Customer Card ID Number (CID or CVV2) is a three or four digit number that is unique to each card.
This additional security feature is designed to protect you by helping to ensure the card is present during the purchase.
It is printed only on the card, never on any receipts or statements.

The Card Identification # is the 4 digit, non-embossed number printed above your account number on the face of your card. This number is recorded as an additional security precaution.

Private Payment User? Please use the CID from your issued American Express Card.

If your AMEX account number does not have a plastic card associated with it, then you do not have a Card Identification #. In this case, you should enter the last 4 digits of your AMEX account number in the Card Identification # field in order for your transaction to be processed.

CVV2: A new Three-Digit Value
An important new security feature for card-not present transactions now appears on the back of most Visa cards. This new feature is a three-digit value which provides a cryptographic check of the information embossed on the card.

CVV2�s Location
The CVV2 three-digit value is printed on the signature panel on the back of Visa cards immediately following the Visa card account number.

The CVV2 value helps validate two things:

The Customer has a Visa card in his/her possession.
The Card account is legitimate.

CVV2 is printed only on the back of Visa cards--it is not contained in the magnetic stripe information, nor does it appear on sales receipts.

Card Identification Number (CID/4DBC) is a four digit, non-embossed (flat) number that is printed on the face of every American Express Card.

Q2. Where do I find the CID?
CID is oftentimes located on the right side of embossed account number (15 digit Card Number) on the Face of the Card.In some cards the CID is located on the left side of the Card but is always above the account number. Some Cards have a 4-digit number embossed below the account number. Such number appearing below the account number is not the CID.

Q3. What are the benefits of the CID check?
The CID code adds assurance that the consumer placing the order has access or physical possession of the credit card itself in order to use the CID code. Hence with this feature your card remains secure from the fraudulent use. The CID is an important layer of security to help you reduce your risks in accepting card-Not-Present transactions and may be required or recommended by your payment processor or merchant bank.

Q4. Do I need to intimate/inform you to avail this service?
No. You will have to provide the CID on the website each time you are making the payment for availing the services.

Q5. What if my card doe not have a CID number?
CID is currently supported for all American Express Cards so we have made it mandatory to enter the CID while transacting with us to avail our services.

Is CID the same as CVV?

Known as a Card Verification Value (CVV) on the Visa network and a Card Verification Code (CVC) on Mastercard, these three-digit CSC codes are printed in small boxes beside the signature strip on the back of cards. On American Express and Discover cards, the CSC number is known as a Card Identification Number (CID).

Where is CID number located?

The 3 or 4 digit Security Code (CVV2) can be found on the back of your credit card. For American Express, the Security Code (CID) can be found on the front of the card.
