Welcome to Cañon City, home of the highest suspension bridge in America.

Home of the world-famous Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. The area offers a variety of outdoor activities for the entire family year-round. Hunting, fishing (and the best fly fishing in the nation), boating, rafting. bicycling, golfing, hiking, swimming, camping, horseback riding, ATV trips and mountain climbing are all available in the area. Take a ride along the rim of the Royal Gorge with Colorado Jeep Tours. They also can take you along the Gold Belt Tour through the late 1800’s mining districts of Cripple Creek and Victor. All of their tours are breathtakingly scenic and accommodate most ages and abilities.

Cañon City also offers shopping in its Historic Downtown, award-winning wine tasting at the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey, and you can experience the history of the Pikes Peak area by touring the Gold Belt Bywaywhich includes two exciting and very scenic routes from Cañon City to Cripple Creek, our local gaming town some 9,000+ feet in the mountains. There's plenty of fun, excitement, beauty and spirit in the Cañon City area.

Cañon City is known for its breathtaking plant and wildlife, so make sure to look all around you as you explore the area's trails. Beginners can try the Arkansas Riverwalk, an easy route for a light stroll and a perfect site to bring out the binoculars and spend some time birding.

Why is it called Canon City?

In 1861 residents voted to name the settlement "Town of Canyon City", but a reporter for the meeting used the Spanish "cañon", and so it became Canon City. With no discovery of gold in the area and recruitment for troops for the Civil War, a population decline took place.

Is Canon City a good place to live?

Canon city is an average town that is slowly but surely growing up. Housing is more affordable than surrounding areas, that's what brought me here. There's not much for young people to do but that's also changing, slowly but surely. It's a good location though, the commute to places more eventful isn't bad.

Does Canon City Colorado have mountains?

Canon City is also close to a number of mountain ranges, including the Sangre De Cristos and the Sawatch Range. While the mountain splendor around Canon City is undeniable, the area is actually more famous for its water.
