What is the hole on the top of my iPad?

  • #2

Am I seeing things, or is there a small hole up top of my iPad? Looks like the hole where a camera would be...

Do you mean the hole for the ear phones?

Already been discussed. It is the ambient light sensor.

Ah ok, thanks

Well it depends, if you are referring to the small hole on the silver aluminum casing edge by the headphone jack, that is the microphone. If you are referring to the small transparent hole in the black bezel edge, you are correct it is the ambient light sensor.

I stuck the small pin in there when I was looking for the sim card slot,
Could I have damaged the sensor?

Sounds like you might've stuck it in the microphone hole, rather than the light sensor (light sensor isn't a hole you can access). It's unlikely you damaged it, but possible depending on how hard you pushed it in. What you should do, to be sure, is download one of the free Voice record apps on the App store and test recording your voice.

The best thing to do if you've got a hole and you're not sure what it is is to jab something in it.

You owe me a new monitor! I spewed coffee all over it!

That's always been my motto...

I concur

I see what you've done there.

Sounds like the microphone to me as well. Is it on the silver frame right next to the earphone jack? Yeah, you could do some damage poking around there.

PS - I was really tempted to make a joke about how I stuck a paperclip end in mine, and my iPad ejected the iOS CD. But I was worried someone would actually try it to get the CD out of their iPad.

PPS - You know the iPad won't boot without that CD, so don't do it!

CD? When did iPads go digital?!? I thought there was a good old tape deck in there.

OK can someone help me out here?

First time iPad owner. I checked the iPad 3rd Gen user guide and it appears that small hole is for the microphone. I turned on auto-brightness and it just gets slightly brighter even in direct sunlight and shouldn't the iPad display get really bright?

Does anyone have a picture of the ambient light sensor?

See that black hole at the top of your iPad on the front? That's your camera, now look closely just above it, that small miscolored circle is the light sensor.

What are the two holes on the top of my iPad Pro?

Those are the stereo microphones, I believe. Thank you. That makes perfect sense.

Is there a reset hole on iPad?

All replies. There is no reset button, but if you need to reset it you can by pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake (power) button for ~10 seconds. Press and hold them till you see the apple logo appear on the screen. Once you see the logo, release the buttons and let your iPad continue to load.

What is the hole on side of iPad Pro?

The SIM tray is located on the lower right side of the device. To insert a SIM card, insert a SIM tool into the small hole to eject the SIM tray.
