Japanese animes are one-of-a-kind and action-packed entertainment that definitely keeps us on the edge of our seats. Guns, fights, mafia, and whatnot. If all this is in a combo, then completing the whole anime series in one long night is not at all a big thing. And when I talk about anime, this  one name keeps echoing inside my brain: Black Lagoon!

The very first episode of the anime came out on the April 8, 2006, and aired 12 episodes in total with its last episode airing on the June 25, 2006. The anime was adapted from the manga series with 12 volumes, written by Rei Hiroe with its original run starting from April 19, 2002. The series was published by Shogakukan while the English publisher was Viz Media in the magazine Monthly Sunday Gene – X.

The first season of the anime aired between April and June 2006 with 12 episodes in total with a run time of 33-34 minutes each. The series was directed and written by Sunao Katabuchi and the production team consisted of Jun Nishimura, Mitsutoshi Ogura, and Junya Okamoto. The anime came out under the studio banner Madhouse. The fantastic music was by Edison.

The series originally came out on the Japanese platform, airing on a bunch of them, such as CTC, Tokyo MX, KBS, NBN, ABN TVN, NCC, SUN, etc. Whereas releasing the translated version on Sony Movie Channel, G4tech TV, and so on.

What is Black Lagoon about?

Pirates, the word itself bring us a whole dramatic scene of ships, voyages, adventures, smugglings, treasures, and whatnot. And we can only guess the excitement of the story that is based in the early 1900s, all put together we can a wholesome dish ever, Black Lagoon.

The story revolves around a whole group of pirates that go by the name Lagoon Company. The team excels in smuggling goods around the seas of Southeast Asia in the early 1900s. The base for their operations is built in a fictional city of Roanapur, which falls in the country Thailand. The main course of transporting their smuggled good is through a PT boat called Black Lagoon.

When the team gets down to the land, they all turn into businessmen and use one of the characters Benny’s Road Runner. Business people have a lot of clients worldwide, but the Russian syndicate seems to be their favorite.

The problems start mid-way on the trip when he encountered a team of pirates, who go by the name Lagoon Company, and they take Rock in the name of kidnapping.

Black Lagoon as a series tends to take nothing from nobody. In fact, across all 24 episodes, the F-bomb is dropped 259 times. Every disgusting thing about the world is wrapped up into a handful of scenarios which our protagonist (Rokuro "Rock" Okajima) is forced to endure when his old life as a salaryman is replaced with the life of a smuggler in the seas of Southeast Asia.

From a production standpoint, the series is really showing its age (2006). The visuals aren't nearly as crisp or colorful as works these days (it honestly looks closer to the late 90s "Cowboy Bebop") and the soundtrack left much to be desired. The English dub, while colorful with its language (that's surely an understatement) does occasionally fall flat in terms of delivery. That said, there are some rather perfect performances as well.

In my opinion, it's a series that should be watched by every anime fan, even if you only watch it one time.

On My "Top-Five" List....

I've been a big fan of anime since I was a kid. Problem is, I grew up....and so did my taste in anime.

Luckily, Black Lagoon came along at a time when the only good things in my life were G.I.T.S. and Bebop...times were tough, and I had to move on

....and boy did I !

Picturesque South Pacific visuals and down-n-dirty sensabilities make for good bedfellows in this raunchy tale of down-home mercs in an unforgiving black market lifestyle with an uncouthe sense of humor. If you have to ask....then you already know what you're missing !

Hotpants and guns

Its an okay anime about a grumpy but pretty anime lady and her posse on a crime spree in the South Pacific. I wouldn't say these are the deepest characters I've ever seen, but it doesn't get bogged down in quite as many melodramatic monologues as some Anime do.

Great show, highly recommended. Some episodes call flat but the attention to detail in the guns, cars, etc makes all the difference
