Overview: A low-budget horror film surprises with good graphics and solid pacing, even if the scares won't keep you up at night. If you like Scream, you'll likely enjoy this semi-homage.

Plot: 3/5
Spoiler Free! Sometimes, horror movies are like comfort food, and here is a perfect example. This movie doesn't try to push boundaries or explore deep philosophical concepts, and that's perfectly okay! It's about two idiot college students who take prank phone calls too far, and what happens when the person on the other end doesn't find it funny. Standard horror fare, but in this instance, it felt...right.

Visuals: 4/5
The visuals are where this movie shines, albeit also a bit of a crutch. In the opening sequence, we are treated to camera work expected in much higher budget films (think the opening of Fight Club). However, the director doesn't seem to always know how to use this technique properly, as it is used again to a reaction of "Well...that was unnecessary". Touches like pouring rain and Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" are a nice surprise as well, and lend authenticity.

Sound: 3/5
The director weaponized sound to toy with us and the characters, and it is quite effective. With the central plot surrounding a ringing phone, we begin to dread every time we hear it go off, knowing what unpleasantness lies on the other end.

Pacing: 4/5
In a similar vein to Payphone, it is difficult to set an entire movie in one static location and still hold the audience's interest, yet Don't Hang Up accomplishes this decently. The sense of claustrophobia is played against us, making the audience feel the anxiety of the characters who just want to leave. Straight through to the climax, the movie rarely hits a slow spot.

Fear Factor: 3/5
This movie plays much like Scream, if Scream was set in one house and had about a 70/30 ration of horror to comedy. Not terrifying, but certainly better than many low budget films. The tight pacing and tension are what carry us through to the end. This movie relies less on jump scares and more on the unknown.

Final Score: 3 out of 5

Verdict: For what it is, this movie is a perfect rainy night or lazy summer flick. If you've got Prime, it's free, and I can think of worse movies to watch in this genre. It won't revolutionize the industry, but hey, sometimes you just want fluff.
