Where can I watch Glee after leaving Netflix?

“Glee,” the mega-popular Ryan Murphy musical comedy series, will debut on Disney+ and Hulu June 1, Disney announced Friday. The announcement was made a day after the 13-year anniversary of the pilot, which initially aired on Fox in 2009.

All six seasons of “Glee” landed on Netflix in 2019, shortly after the series celebrated its tenth anniversary. The show remained a popular title for the streamer, before being taken off the platform in November 2021. The series has been absent from streaming since, although it is currently available to rent or buy via Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play and other online rental platforms.

The launch of the series on the two streamers will coincide with the beginning of Pride month, with the series serving as part of the platforms’ LGBTQ programming initiatives over the course of June. During its initial run, “Glee” was famous for its inclusion of prominent LGBTQ characters, particularly main characters Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer) and Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera), as well as a number of openly gay actors in the cast, including Colfer and Jane Lynch. The show won two GLAAD Awards over the course of its run.

Created by Murphy with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, “Glee” focuses on the New Directions, a show choir at the fictional William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, as they compete in competitions while navigating their messy personal lives. The series starred a large ensemble cast, with Matthew Morrison leading as club teacher Will Schuester and Colfer, Rivera, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Dianna Agron, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Mark Salling, Heather Morris, Harry Shum Jr., Chord Overstreet and Darren Criss playing the members.

Over the course of its network run from 2009 to 2015, “Glee” attracted strong ratings, and 207 singles from the show’s score — consisting mostly of showtunes and pop song covers — charted on the Billboard Hot 100. The show retains a large fanbase to this day, and helped launch Murphy to become one of the most prominent producers and creators in television.

Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan, this musical comedy-drama series arrived back in 2009 and immediately swept audiences up in its chronicling of New Directions, a glee club at William McKinley High School.

The performers knocked it out of the park with a wealth of covers, some of which earned significant exposure even outside of the show’s fandom.

However, it wasn’t just about the music for people. The writers never shied away from tackling important themes, especially when targeting a largely teenage demographic. They were unafraid to talk about race, sexuality, family and beyond, without ever becoming inaccessible to mainstream audiences.

Despite some missing out on its initial run – it ended in 2015 – Netflix gave many the opportunity to finally check it out and fall in love with Rachel and the gang.

Sadly, it won’t stick around forever. So, here’s when Glee is leaving Netflix and where to watch when it’s gone…

When is Glee leaving Netflix? Where to watch

Glee will be removed from the platform on Tuesday, November 30th 2021. So, if you don’t have much left to go, there’s still time to race through the rest of the series.

It went on Netflix back in 2019 and introduced a new generation to its infectious musical numbers.

Don’t let Glee leaving Netflix stress you out though. Despite being taken off soon, that doesn’t mean there’s no way to stream it anymore. It’s also available to binge courtesy of Amazon Prime Video as part of your subscription.

It’s streaming on Prime Video in the US but episodes and seasons have to be purchased or rented in the UK. However, if you have access to a VPN you can access Amazon Video’s extensive library from the UK too.

If you’re unfamiliar with VPNs and how to use them, simply follow these four easy steps:

Step 1. Pick a VPN Tool

There are a wealth of VPN tools out there but we recommend the likes of Express VPN, VPN Hub, Panda, Cyber Ghost, Nord VPN, Pure VPN or Vypr VPN. All of them will cost a little bit of money, although some of the tools offer free 30-day trials.

Step 2. Download and Install

Simply sign up to your chosen VPN tool – usually via one, three, six or 12-month deals – and download the tool.

Step 3. Follow the Instructions

Each VPN tool comes with different guidelines. However, they’re all relatively easy to follow but may vary depending on whether you have a MacBook or Windows software.

Step 4. Enjoy Glee

With the VPN correctly set up, you should now be able to access any USA or worldwide website. This means that you can sign in to your Amazon Prime Video on the US site and access their library, which fortunately includes Glee.

“There’s the world pre-Glee and post-Glee”

Looking back on the show’s importance long after it ended, Jessalyn Gilsig (who played Terri) and Kevin McHale (Artie) opened up to Billboard.

Dissecting its origins, Jessalyn explained:

“There’s the world pre-Glee and post-Glee. It had such an impact, culturally and globally, and it feels like a different world. Now, we forget that it wasn’t straight-to-series. It was a traditional pilot, and it had to be reviewed. We didn’t know if anybody was going to like it.”

She added: “I remember thinking that I would love it — but that it was also very niche. It was really for theater geeks. When it turned out we all have a theater geek inside of us, and it connected to so many people in so many unexpected ways, that was a surprise to me,” she adds.

Kevin similarly weighed in: “Honestly, when I look at the world today and the conversations we’re having, I credit Ryan for so much of that — and Glee. It got people talking, and it freed up so many kids who were trapped and felt invisible.”
