Where to find Somber Smithing Stone 10

Upgrading weapons in a Soulsborne game is almost tradition, but Elden Ring brings a new twist to the formula: the Somber Smithing Stone. All kinds of magic and massive weapons are available to fell the huge bosses the game pits you against, but many require these special materials to unlock their true potential.

The most potent of these is the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, of which there are only eight in the entirety of the game. You'll need these Somber Dragon Smithing Stones to max out some of the most powerful weapons in the game, but FromSoft makes you work for it. Updated August 8, 2022 By Dan Christmann: Aside from Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears, Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are perhaps Elden Ring's most precious resource. You don't need them to upgrade every weapon, but some of the best in the game, including Moonveil, Rivers of Blood, and the Sword of Night and Flame all require one to get to level ten. They're not essential, but let's be honest, you'll want as many as you can get your tarnished hands on.

To that end, we've clarified this article's entries to make it easier for you to find all Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone locations. We've also added map locations to take the pressure off you even more. Elden Ring is hard enough. Quit searching around and get to your real task: killing a god.

8/8 Consecrated Snowfield

Potentially the first Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone you can find in Elden Ring, this is also one of the simpler ones to acquire. Once you have made your way to the Consecrated Snowfield area, which requires two halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion found on opposite ends of the map, make your way to the Inner Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace.

Then, follow the river west until you're invaded by an old friend: Anastasia, the Tarnished Eater! Despite her terrifying name, she's not too difficult. If you've already faced her in the Smouldering Church and the Corpse-Stench shack, it's essentially the same fight. Take her out for the third time and Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is yours for the taking.

7/8 Latenna's Quest

The Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are not only harder to find than the regular Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, they are also generally found in later areas of Elden Ring. They are also commonly associated with really long quests, like in the case of this one.

You must complete Latenna's Quest in its entirety to get this Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. That means picking her up at Slumbering Wolf's Shack in Liurnia, then taking her all the way to the Apostate Derelict in the Consecrated Snowfield. The quest is fairly convoluted, but it's worth going to if you want to forge a weapon to kill a god.

6/8 Mohgwyn Palace

This Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is a bit easier to find than some of the others but is tied to the Mohgwyn Palace area — which comes with a slew of extremely dangerous enemies. Most enemies in the area employ some kind of bleed attack. Paying attention to the status effects used against you is crucial to obtaining this Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

The closest site of grace to this Stone is the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint. Make your way up the stairs to a courtyard full of red Albinaurics and a single Sanguine Noble. Take them out one by one, and this Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is yours.

5/8 Elphael, Brace Of The Haligtree: Prayer Room Chest

To get to this Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, you must progress all the way through the secret Consecrated Snowfield area, through Miquella's Haligtree, and onto the Elphael area. Like Mohgwyn Palace, this area is filled with potentially lethal enemies, so caution is advised.

Starting from the Prayer Room Site of Grace, follow the stairs out of the room to a platform overlooking a gazebo. Jump down, cross the yard, and hop onto a branch. At the end of the branch, you'll find a room with the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in a convenient chest.

4/8 Elphael, Brace Of The Haligtree: Prayer Room Body

You'll find most Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in Elden Ring in areas accessed using the secret Haligtree Medallion. Though it is technically optional, it is definitely worth completing these areas if you have a Somber weapon that you wish to upgrade to max level.

This Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing stone is located fairly close to the last, but with a twist. You'll start at the Prayer Room Site of Grace, but you'll want to make your way to the closest tower. Platform across it, and hop down onto the walkway. Be warned, there is a Putrid Avatar waiting for you. Kill it or sneak past to find the Stone on a body to the far right.

3/8 Millicent's Quest

Arguably the most difficult Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in Elden Ring, this one not only requires you to progress through the entire Haligtree area and to complete the Millicent quest line, but you also must defeat the most difficult boss in Elden Ring: Malenia, Blade of Miquella.

Once you have defeated the boss and obtained the Unalloyed Gold Needle, you return to Malenia's boss arena. There will be a blooming flower here, which you can interact with. This will reward you a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone and Miquella's Needle, which will cure you of flame of Chaos.

2/8 Crumbling Farum Azula

You will need a fully upgraded weapon more than ever when you've made your way up to Crumbling Farum Azula, as the enemies and bosses here are some of the most dangerous in Elden Ring. Luckily there are a bunch of regular Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones here, especially this one Somber Stone.

Unfortunately, this one is extremely difficult to get to. Starting at the Dragon Temple Rooftop Site of Grace, you'll have to fight your way past the extremely annoying Stormhawks, all while a dragon rains lightning down upon you. Get past the birds, kill the dragon, and you'll notice a gazebo off to the left. The Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone you find there may just be worth the hell the game put you through.

1/8 Leyndell, Ashen Capital

After defeating Maliketh, the Black Blade, you will be returned to Leyndell, but the city will be covered in ash from the nearby burning Erdtree. Though there is not too much to do at the capital at this point, there is another Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone here.

Starting at the main Leyndell, Capital of Ash Site of Grace, follow the dragon towards the west until you see a building with a climbable ladder. Up top, you will see a gargoyle guarding the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone on a nearby body. You can fight the Gargoyle, but it's fairly easy to sneak past and grab it.
