Where to watch Boca vs River Plate?

Argentina's Superclasico foes Boca Juniors and River Plate renew their rivalry Sunday night in Buenos Aires in the Copa de la Liga Profesional. The domestic cup competition, in its second year, splits 26 sides into two groups of 13. While Boca and River are in opposite groups, each side plays one rival from the opposite group during the competition, with the top four teams in each group making the quarterfinals after a 13-game round-robin.

Boca Juniors is the reigning champion after beating Banfield on penalties last year.

River Plate is outside of the top four in its group through four matches, going 2-2-0, with its most recent outing a 1-0 defeat to Argentinos Juniors.

Boca, meanwhile, is fourth in its group, going 2-2-0, with its most recent match a 7-1 thrashing of Velez Sarsfield.

The two clubs are the most storied and successful in Argentina's history, with River Plate's 36 domestic league championships besting Boca's 34—though Boca is the reigning champion. The two are also among the most successful in the Copa Libertadores, with Boca Juniors's six South American titles the second-most in history, while River is close behind with four. They nearly met in the 2020 Copa Libertadores final, only to both fall to Brazilian opposition in the semifinals.

The two did meet in a famous, 2018 final, whose second leg was delayed and relocated to Madrid due to fan unrest and safety concerns. River Plate won, 5-3 on aggregate, after extra time in the second leg. River also bested Boca in the 2019 semifinals, 2-1 on aggregate, before falling to Flamengo in the final.

One could argue that there is no rivalry in world club soccer bigger than what is happening on Sunday -- and it isn't Barcelona vs. Real Madrid in El Clasico. It's the Superclasico in Argentina, as River Plate welcome Boca Juniors. A rivalry marked by physicality, tension, drama and sometimes violence, the latest chapter comes as both look for league domination and more hardware to add to their filled trophy cases.

How to watch and odds

  • Date: Sunday, March 20 | Time: 6 p.m. ET
  • Location: Estadio Monumental -- Buenos Aires, Argentina
  • TV and live stream: Paramount+.

What to know about each team

River Plate: Marcelo Gallardo's team entered the weekend in first place in Group A, as the league does two divisions. They will need to win to get back into first following Racing's 2-1 win at Independiente on Saturday night. This team has plenty of talent that has played overseas like Enzo Perez, but it also features the No. 1 prospect in all of Argentine soccer -- Julian Alvarez. The budding superstar striker, already signed up by Manchester City, is set to see this be his last Superclasico. He'll be expected to go out with a bang.

Boca Juniors: In Boca you have a team that has shifted away from so many veteran players and has instead embraced a bit of a youth movement, while also bringing back fan favorite Dario Bendetto after he spent time in Europe with Marseille and Elche. Players like midfielders Alan Varela and Cristian Medina are the future of that Boca midfield, while experienced vets like Sebastian Villa and Eduardo Salvio man the wings. Mainstay centerback Carlos Izquieredoz misses out though due to injury.

Top three reasons to watch

Prediction

On paper and simply with the eye test, River Plate are the sharper, more cohesive team. That typically means nothing in this rivalry, but with Izquierdoz out and with Benedetto coming off an injury, the advantage is clearly with the hosts. Pick: River Plate 2, Boca Juniors 1

One of the most storied derby matches in the world will take center stage as Argentine giants Boca Juniors and River Plate meet on Sunday. Both teams aren't performing to their lofty expectations but they sit only four points out of first place in the Primera Division with 17 matches played. Being level on points, this will be an especially critical match which adds fuel to the fire of the derby.

Neither side have lost in their last five matches, but River Plate haven't won a league match at La Bombonera since 2015. Marcelo Gallardo has had a tough job this season after losing Enzo Fernadez and Julian Alvarez to the transfer market, but River have built a balanced attack with 14 different players scoring at least one goal this season. Boca Juniors have had one of the leakiest defenses in Argentina allowing 22 goals but the team has performed much better at home, only losing two matches.

Here's our storylines, how you can watch the match and more:

Storylines

Boca Juniors: Sebastian Villa not being available for the match will be a big blow for Boca. The winger has been involved in 10 goals during the season but has been out since the end of August with a knee injury. Hugo Ibarra will also be without Exequel Zeballos and Diego Gonzalez.

River Plate: Pablo Solari is in doubt for River Plate as Gallardo's depth has been tested while Bruno Zuculini will also miss the match as he continues to serve a suspension from a red card against Barracas Central.

Prediction

A hotly contested match will be fit for excitement from start to finish but Boca's home advantage will be too much to overcome. Pick: Boca Juniors 2, River Plate 1
