Cliffhanger with no resolution or ending

Verified purchase

This was an awesome series and the only reason I did not give it five stars is due to the simple fact there is only one season. This one season made references to many characters from D.C. Unfortunately, it also left you in the middle of a cliffhanger with absolutely NO method of resolution. There is no season two and there is as far as I can tell no plans to reboot or restart the season. Hopefully one of the streaming providers will decide to take up the challenge. However, currently there is not even a whisper or rumor this will happen. If you buy the season be prepared to enjoy it right up until the end.

It's ok but not as good as the movie

Verified purchase

I never read the comics, but I liked the movie, which is why I bought this. I don't know if it follows the comics or not, but evil characters feared Constantine in the movie, they act like he's a 3rd rate magician in the series. It gets a little better as the series progresses, but wasn't enough to save it for a second season apparently.

A Decent DC Series that should have lasted longer

Verified purchase

I watched for first 3-4 episodes of this series when it was released. For some reason I didn't continue the series, but I've long wanted to invest the time (and money) in completing the series. With the quarantine binging has become even more commonplace. As a result I purchased the series and binged it over a couple weeks after purchasing. Here's some feedback:
1. I love Matt Ryan's casting and portrayal of John Constantine. He looks like what I expected. He sounds like what I expected. Finally he acts like I would expect (at least in a made for TV series)
2. This is basically a horror series, so don't go in misinformed. It's very supernatural in nature (demons, angels, curses, voodoo, etc.). It's a dark series.
3. As a I mentioned, the portrayal of John Constantine is on the way to what I'd expect from the character. I think the limiter is that this was a series made for TV. John Constantine is nice on TV than he is in comics. The stories hit on aspects, but doesn't go as far or stay there.
4. The series deserved much more than a single season. As I understand, John Constantine has had some time in the CW's Arrowverse (but I have not seen those appearances). I could imagine John having a great run in the newest DC Swamp Thing series had that series also not gotten cancelled after 1 season.
5. As far as side characters, I like Chas and Manny, but I was not a fan of Zed. I think John is best alone. The series did introduce some characters from the comics (beyond Chas). It's great to see this series woven into the larger DC Universe.
6. Having John US based didn't resonate well with me. Also, the central theme of how they engaged in certain adventures wasn't my favorite. Again, that theme seemed to make John more good than he's normally portrayed in comics.

This is a decent horror series and it had a lot of potential that will (sadly) never be realized. Here's hoping that the Matt Ryan version of Constantine makes many more appearances in TV. and on screen

For comic book fans

I enjoyed this series while on television and wish that it had lasted longer than one season. I’m so glad that the Arrowverse shows brought on Matt Ryan to reprise his role as Constantine. I feel this series is closer to the source material than the Keanu Reeves film (although Reeves is always fun, so I don’t hate that version either). Matt Ryan’s take on the role just feels more like the Hellblazer version of Constantine to me. It was on network tv so it’s not overly gory, but it would probably be too scary for some viewers (think Supernatural type scares). I will happily go rewatch it!

One of the best new NBC/Horror shows since Hannibal

Verified purchase

I am a big fan of this show. I like horror shows in general, with my resume including Hannibal, Walking Dead, Supernatural, X Files, Dresden Files, Sleepy Hollow, Friday the 13th the Series, The Strain and many others. I have to say, NBC has done a great job with Constantine. I have not read any of the DC comics of Hellblazer from witch the show is based off of so I cannot vouch for it's accuracy to the material. Matt Ryan does a great job as John Constantine, a regrettably self-described exorcist and master of the dark arts. (He's getting his business card changed) John from episode to episode deals with demonic possession, vengeful spirits, fallen angels, an misguided medium named Papa Midnight and many other otherworldly problems. This show moves at a great pace, never getting dull or uninteresting and so far has big screen worthy special effects. The characters of Zed and Chaz are well acted as well and equally enjoyable as a counterpoint to John Constantine's dry, dark wit. All in all I put this show in my top five horror shows, and recommend this to all horror or suspense fans. More people should be watching this show, and NBC should wise up and put it on a Wednesday or Thursday because it is suffering in a Friday time slot otherwise us viewers are going to lose a great show definitely worthy of renewal. If anything put Law and Order SVU on Friday nights. That show should have been put out to pasture a long time ago
