This series will be the first time international cricket will be played in Townsville since 2016, and the first matches to involve Australia. The previous series held in the region were Papua New Guinea vs Hong Kong in 2014 and Papua New Guinea vs Ireland in 2016.

Zimbabwe have just come off a 3-0 series loss to India, albeit they were competitive in each match. Before that, they defeated Bangladesh 2-1 in early July.
