Which side part is more attractive

Most people know which hairstyle suits their face shape but a celebrity hairdresser has revealed that it's actually where you part your hair that can make all the difference.

Jordan Garrett, a celebrity stylist at Daniel Hersheson who has worked with Mollie King and Olivia Palermo, insists there's a specific parting for each face shape. He says that choosing the right one for yours can make you look your most attractive, knock pounds off your face and soften any harsh features.

Here, he shares the simple formula for matching your parting to your face shape to elongate your features, enhance your cheekbones, soften sharp angles and slim your face.

OVAL: PART IN THE MIDDLE

Ladies with oval face shapes like Jessica Alba can opt for any style because their face shape is so versatile. Jordan says that opting for a centre parting, left, is, however, the most flattering look over a side parting, right

This shape, which Jessica Alba and Cat Deeley are the proud owners of, is one of the most versatile and suits any look.

Jordan advises keeping the parting in the middle to elongate the face. If you have a fringe, he says you should keep the bangs longer around the face to square off roundness.

ROUND: OPT FOR A CENTRE PARTING

Ladies with a round face like Jennifer Lawrence need to focus on creating structure by focusing on a centre parting, left, says Jordan. Parting your hair in the centre is much more flattering than on the side, right

If, like Jennifer Lawrence, you posses a round face, you need to focus on creating structure by focusing on a centre parting. Splitting your hair down the middle will help create the illusion of length and symmetry.

'Keep the parting in the middle to knock pounds of the face,' he said. 'Make like Jennifer and pull some strands loose around the face; texture can make all the difference.'

'I also wouldn't recommend a fringe for this face shape.'

LONG: ALWAYS HAVE A DEEP SIDE PARTING

The secret hair hack for a long face shape - like Sarah Jessica Parker's - is a deep side parting, which the actress sported recently. Although she made it her signature look in Sex and the City, Jordan says ladies with long faces like hers should avoid a centre parting, right

The secret hair hack for a long face shape - like Sarah Jessica Parker's - is to avoid a centre parting.

Jordan says ladies with longer faces should always plump for a deep side parting to give the face shape more width.

Whilst most women want to elongate their faces, ladies with longer faces can enhance their looks with a side parting.

HEART: GO FOR A DEEP SIDE PARTING

If, like Scarlett Johansson, you have a heart face shape, you should go for a severe side parting, left, because it breaks up your chin line. Scarlett often mixes up her hairstyle but Jordan believes a severe side, left, is better than a centre one, right

If, like Scarlett Johansson, you have a heart face shape, Jordan says a severe side parting is the best way to wear your hair because it breaks up you chin line.

Round Face: Middle or Deep Side Part

“If you have a round shape, the ideal part line is down the middle or a deep side part,” Fowler says. “Both of these parts will give the illusion of length and create symmetry around your face.”

If your face shape is round, part your hair down the middle or with a deep side part. “If you have a round shape, the ideal part line is down the middle or a deep side part,” Fowler says. “Both of these parts will give the illusion of length and create symmetry around your face.”

Fowler warns against adding too many layers to your hairstyle if your face shape is round: “Add just enough to slim the face.”

Square Face: Side Part With Bangs

Fowler says that a soft, sideswept part with bangs or a swoop will add softness to square-faced ladies.

Dean recommends an extra-deep side part to elongate your features: “The sides of the face are commonly straight, meaning an extra-deep side part is your new best friend.”

Fowler suggests not going too deep: “You don’t want to make the part too deep—this will accentuate [the angles] of a square face,” says Fowler. Instead, show just enough skin on your forehead and allow your bangs to offset your angled jawline.

Oval Face: Any Part

Oval-faced ladies can pull off pretty much any part. Fowler says the most “ideal” face shape for any part is the oval-shaped face.

This is the easiest of face shapes to style for, as Dean recommends playing with your part: “Deep side, middle, sideswept all generally work well with the oval face shape.”

An oval face shape “allows you to try a middle, side, or deep part—and you will rock every single one!” If you have an oval-shaped face, play around with your part and mix things up.

Heart Face: Deep Side Part

Fowler says a deep side part will break up the chin line, which can be pointy if you have a heart-shaped face. “You want to soften your cheekbones as well,” Fowler says.

“A deep side part will brush softly against your face and give this illusion,” says Dean.

If your hair naturally parts down the middle, create a side part by parting your hair while it is wet, then applying a gel to hold the new part in place. Use a fine-toothed comb to direct your hair in the new direction as you blow dry.

However, Dean says to experiment with a middle part and play around with layers to help enhance your features, like Reese Witherspoon’s layered lob. “Also try a half-up, half-down look to emphasize the eyes and shape of your face. Heart-shaped faces are unique, so show them off as much as you can,” says Dean.

Diamond Face: Side Part, No Bangs

If you have a diamond-shaped face, you want to stay away from short bangs and stick to side parts. “A side part really complements your strong cheekbones and bone structure,” Fowler remarks.

Fowler says shorter hairstyles work best for this look since diamond-shaped ladies have smaller foreheads. Anything too long and dramatic will overshadow your face.

Oblong Face: Middle Part or Bangs

A middle part is ideal for oblong faces. Fowler suggests a middle part to add the illusion of roundness to oblong faces.

“Bangs also work very well for this look because they help shorten the long face shape,” Fowler says. She recommends asking for a haircut with layers to bring out your cheekbones and strong jawline.

FAQ

  • How do I find my natural part?

To find your natural part, start with towel-dried hair. Working in sections, comb your hair back toward your crown, then pull your head forward and let your hair naturally fall. Notice where it splits—this will be your hair part.

  • How do I change my hair part?

It'll take some hair training to alter your natural hair part. To do this, wash your hair and while it's still damp, create the desired part. Pull all of the hair back into a hair tie and go to sleep. Do this nightly until you've trained your hair.

  • What is hair part theory?
