Well, according to Radio Times, it's a nod to the year that star Jim Parsons was born: 1973. Pretty cool, huh?

But of course, there needed to be a little science behind it or well, Sheldon just wouldn't care about it. As we learn from him in episode 73 (!) "The Alien Parasite Hypothesis," the number 73 is actually pretty special. "73 is the 21st prime number," Sheldon explains. "Its mirror, 37, is the 12th and its mirror, 21, is the product of multiplying 7 and 3 ... and in binary 73 is a palindrome, 1001001, which backwards is 1001001."

Some have also wondered about what Sheldon’s love for the number 73 stands for, and we’re going to decode it for you!

The mystery behind Sheldon’s superhero t-shirts

Sheldon is a genius and there are no two questions about that. As it is, every genius mind has its own set of emotions and Sheldon does too! He might do his best to put on a poker face and pretend like nothing matters but fans have discovered several easter eggs that make sense of his behaviours.

Sheldon is quite moody and usually wears solid coloured t-shirts with science fiction logos or comic characters. His “Green Lantern t-shirt” is popular with fans, and if you’re not a nerd as big as him, you’re in for a surprise. In the Green Lantern comics, colours correspond with moods and emotions and reflect a feeling accordingly. Seeing as Sheldon is a massive fan of the superhero, it wouldn’t be wrong to presume his acceptance of the idea.

He wears similar t-shirts in different colours, perhaps ones that reflect his mood on certain days. They have a deeper meaning than viewers might notice at first glance, but it sounds like something Sheldon would do.

Why Sheldon loves the number 73

Of course, Sheldon Cooper has a favourite number. Although it might sound simple when you hear it, there’s an equally complicated reason behind it. Because nothing is straight with Sheldon Cooper!

In the tenth episode of the fourth season, titled “The Alien Hypothesis”, Sheldon Cooper expresses his love for a certain number. He often wears a t-shirt with the number 73 on it and goes to explain the reason why.

In the episode, Sheldon explains that “73 is the 21st prime number, its mirror 37 is the 12th, its mirror 21 is the product of multiplying (hang on to your hats) 7 and 3.” At first, Raj tries to explain why his favourite number is the superior one but Sheldon wouldn’t have it.

Funnily, Jim Parsons was born in 1973 and “The Alien Hypothesis” is actually the 73rd episode of the series. We wouldn’t be surprised if the writers set up the viewers for the unexpected joke!

Where you can see Sheldon Cooper in action after ‘The Big Bang Theory’

‘The Big Bang Theory’ aired its finale last year and fans have been missing watching the misfits in action. Luckily, for fans, they can continue to learn more about Sheldon Cooper in ‘Young Sheldon’, the TBBT spin-off series!

‘Young Sheldon’ stars Iain Armitage as a younger version of the genius Sheldon Cooper, and follows his high school days. The show is narrated by Jim Parsons, the real Sheldon himself, so there are several nostalgic moments for you to experience.

The first three seasons have been immensely popular and a fourth is on its way! Maybe the new season will see the ‘Young Sheldon’ donning superhero t-shirts and really embracing nerd culture as his adult version does.
