Why doesnt laser hair removal work on me

Three words: silky smooth skin. That’s the end result we all have our eyes locked on. Sadly, it doesn’t always go that way for everyone. Hair removal should be straightforward, but sometimes it isn’t. If IPL hasn’t worked for you, then you’re in the right spot to find out why.

Wondering what IPL means? Keep reading. Our RoseSkinCo IPL Hair Removal Handset utilises IPL hair removal technology. IPL stands for intense pulsed light, and it is a form of light therapy, similar to laser, it is used for various dermatological procedures including long term hair removal. IPL hair removal uses broad spectrum light which targets pigment in the hair and in turn kills the hair growth cells. Laser hair removal works similarly, however it only uses one intense beam of light. The end results of IPL and laser hair removal are very similar, except IPL is much more affordable.

You might have a hormonal imbalance

One of the top reasons why IPL hair removal doesn’t work boils down to hormones. Yes, believe it or not hormonal conditions can lead to ineffective hair removal. Our hormones encourage hair growth with the most common one being testosterone. Males naturally have higher levels of testosterone which is why they’ve more hair, especially facial hair. Women naturally have lower levels of testosterone and a woman’s testosterone levels are controlled by estrogen. This yin and yang type balance prevents women from growing as much facial hair (and other hair for that matter).

However, when a hormonal condition or imbalance strikes it impacts how much hair a female can grow along with its coarseness and the frequency at which it grows. If you’ve tried IPL hair removal many times, followed the instructions down to a T and have an ideal skin tone/hair color then chances are you perhaps have a hormonal imbalance. If this is the case, we recommend you speak to your doctor.

You didn’t time your treatments correctly

It’s simple, but IPL hair removal effectiveness often boils down to frequency and consistency. If you’re scratching your head wondering “Why didn’t IPL hair removal work for me?” then it’s worth taking a second to work out if you made a mistake along the way.

It’s imperative that you shave (do not wax, see below) and it’s also really important that you stick to your hair removal schedule. We recommend you do one full body treatment per week so results will be visible by week 3 and by week 12 you’ll only need a touch up here and there. Yes, patience is required but so is consistency – stick at it and you will inch closer towards beautiful silky smooth skin.

You waxed before treatments

Believe it or not, this is one of the top reasons why IPL hair removal isn’t successful for people (after those that haven’t checked if their skin tone/hair color is treatable). Yes, you do need to remove the hair before every single laser hair removal treatment but you cannot wax it. If you wax before an IPL hair removal treatment, it’s pointless. It won’t work. And it never will if you keep waxing.

Why? Because the laser needs to identify the pigment to locate and target the hair follicle to encourage targeted hair loss. Waxing removes the entire hair and follicle so no pigment can be found by an IPL hair removal handset; which in turn renders the treatment useless.

Make sure you put the hot wax down and pick up a shaver next time.

Your hair color and/or skin tone isn’t treatable

It’s really important you check and see if your natural hair color and skin tone suits the laser hair removal process. Unfortunately, it won’t work for everyone and the same goes for laser hair removal in a clinic too. If this is the case, we recommend our powerful RoseSkinCo 4D Shaver for your closest shave yet. Yes, it’s not the same as IPL or laser hair removal but it’s without a doubt the next best thing.

Ps. If you aren’t sure where you sit on the skin tone and hair color scale, we wrote a comprehensive guide that you should check out here. Alternatively, check out our FAQ for answers to popular most-asked questions.

I've had laser done on my face and legs. But laser hair removal did not work on my face why? I'm a brunette with light skin.

Hair follicles are more complicated than you might think.   I was just reading some research on them recently.   They are quite complex little biological units.  🙂

Assuming you’ve had 5-6 treatments spaced 4-8 weeks apart, then here are some thoughts:

  • Hair follicles are under hormonal control and the # and type of hormone receptors differs on different parts of the body
  • Could you be having hormonal irregularities that might affect your facial hair like irregular periods, change in your pattern, etc.?
  • Hair thickness matters.   A great laser nurse will adjust various parameters on a laser like pulse width, total joules, etc. depending on the hair color and quality.  A mediocre provider (usually minimally trained techs) won’t be able to do that.
  • If you are seeing a reduction in the diameter in hairs themselves on your face (finer hair after the laser treatments), then it IS working but more slowly, and you just may need more treatments.
  • No hair removal modality – no matter what it is – is perfect.   Not every hair will be removed.
  • If you think you may be having hormonal problem or have acne plus increased hair growth, be sure to see your doctor.   There are problems that can increase hair growth like polycystic ovaries (PCO), or endometriosis or metabolic syndrome, and many others!!

Hope this helps,  Dr. I

Why doesn’t laser hair removal work sometimes? was last modified: November 23rd, 2021 by Brandith Irwin

Does laser hair removal work on everybody?

In the past, only people with dark hair and light skin could safely have laser hair removal. Today, laser hair removal is a treatment option for patients who have light-colored hair and light skin and patients who have dark skin. Laser hair removal must be performed very carefully in these patients.

Why is my hair still there after laser removal?

However, even though laser treatments damage hair follicles, they're not destroyed completely. Over time, the treated follicles may recover from the initial damage and grow hair again. It's a tall order to eliminate every hair follicle in a given area. Therefore, you may notice a tiny amount of hair regrowth.

What makes laser hair removal less effective?

It does not work well on dark skin Laser hair removal works better on people with pale skin and dark hair. It's not as effective on tanned skin or hair that's been bleached by the sun. If you've got a tan you'll need to let it fade before having treatment.

Why does laser not work on hormonal hair?

Biological Factors There are biological factors that could influence your results with laser hair removal. If you have a hormonal issue/imbalance (e.g. PCOS) and the hormones are not stable you will not have great results. Heredity can play a factor in the results as well.
