What you need to know

  • Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and S9+ phones are picking up the March 2022 security update.
  • The March 2022 security update includes fixes for over 50 vulnerabilities, along with a few bug fixes.
  • Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series phones and the Galaxy S10 Lite started receiving the latest Android security patch earlier this week.

Samsung recently started rolling out the latest March 2022 Android security patch to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered variants of its Galaxy S22 series phones. As per the folks over at SamMobile, the South Korean tech giant is now bringing the latest security update to the four-year-old Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

The latest software update for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ arrives as version G96xFXXUHFVB4. Besides the March 2022 Android security patch, the update also contains a few bug fixes and stability improvements.

The rollout appears to be limited to Germany right now, but it shouldn’t take long for the update to become available in more markets across Europe and the rest of the world. Galaxy S9 series owners can check for the update manually by opening the Settings app and heading over to Software update > Download and install.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy S9 series phones in 2018 with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. While Samsung only rolled out two major Android OS upgrades to the two phones, it is commendable that they are still receiving the latest security patches.

As many of you might be aware, Samsung changed its software update policy earlier this year. The company’s best Android phones are now eligible to receive four years of OS updates and up to five years of security updates. Google’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, on the other hand, are promised to receive three major OS updates and security updates up to five years. Most Android OEMs still promise just two OS updates to their flagship devices.

I think the title says it all. I found a good deal on Backmarket that’s around $200 for a used s9 in excellent condition. Should I go for it?

level 1

No. It's a great phone if you have it. But is outdated right now. You could get something newer, better and with better battery life and software updates for the same price.

You didn't say the price theyre asking but I guess that u could go for a mid range phone that came out recently. Depends on your use and preference tho. Good luck !

level 2

Thanks! Would you recommend any midrange phones? I’ve been looking at the Moto phones, and it has to be able to work on Verizon.

I love my S9. I've had it for 3.5 years and I plan on using it for at least another two years. That said, I don't think you should buy one now, unless you need a particular feature of it that no other phone has. It is probably getting overtaken by new entry level phones and the lack of software support will be an increasing issue too.

I just upgraded my s9 to a s20 FE and it's awesome. The 120hz Amoled display is something to behold. The fact I can go two days between charges is wild to me. It's got twice the RAM and 4 times the storage of my s9, and still has a MicroSD slot. And i much prefer the fingerprint sensor on the screen compared to on the back of the phone.

I loved my s9, had it forever, but this is without a doubt my new favourite phone. Picked it up new from a reseller for $300CAD

level 1

I love my S9, it has all of the features i care about the most Headphone jack, decent DAC, micro SD expansion, fingerprint sensor in a reasonable location, and the battery still lasts me the whole day

(it is a equinox model)

level 1

My S9 still works for me right now and everything I use works well.

But the battery time is not to good even with a new replaced battery. That is the main reason for me to think about a change.

I myself think of replacing it with an A52 5G that is really cheap meanwhile and the battery last more than a day they say. On my S9 sometimes it is hard to work the hole day without charging in car or so.

Maybe I wait for A53, but I am unsure if it is better. It could be the same as the A52s.

level 2

Same here, my phone really suffers from low battery life

level 2

Do differentiate between A52, A52s and A52s 5G. They're not the same considering speed and value.

level 1

I own an S9 Plus for 3.5 years now. It's working awesome still. The thing is that there are better phones that do more for the amount of money you mentioned. Also, don't forget the software updates are over, so it's ought to get even more dated in the future.

level 1

I'll say s10, but s9 is still great

level 1

I'll say s10, but s9 is still great

level 1

If it's exynos then please don't get one

level 1

I bought a wxynos galaxy s9 in 2020 and while the phone is good but the performance is FRUSTRATING get the snapdragon one

level 1

First thing you should think of, IMO, before you take advices, is what size phone you're comfortable with. The A52s 5G and S20FE 5G are good replacements, but much bigger in size. For me, that's not on the wishlist. Then, look for 3,5mm audio and other less common things if you want that. That'll narrow down your list.

level 1

Definitely not. It was a good phone in 2018. It's much too old at this point. It's security patches are ending and you'll need to spend $70 on a battery replacement, maybe a screen replacement too.

level 1

No too old at this point. I have one and I use it everyday as a second phone but. I wouldn’t pay that kind of money for it. I would be ecstatic if I could sell this phone for $200 and it’s mint. I would go with one of the higher end a range of Samsung‘s

level 1

Go for the s10, more powerful and its a better phone

level 1

No, get an S10+ with the ceramic back. Undestructable! Very good camera, too.

Mine just got the Android 12 Update.

level 1

200$????? That’s wayyyy too much

Can I still use Galaxy S9?

How long will a Galaxy S9 last? Thanks to its Snapdragon 845 chip, the S9 should still feel quick for another couple of years. And even though this phone is not receiving any more major Android OS updates, you can still expect Samsung to release security patches that will keep this phone safe.
