Hi to all my partners there...... I come up with this question today when you say "You are the one" (after bringing and explanation of the context you arrive to say this giving and implicit idea that you will be part of this project). Is it the same that to say "You are the chosen one" (for this project) ? Do you think they are different? Is there one that is more explicit than the other?
Thanks for taking the time to answer Last edited: Nov 28, 2011
Hmm... I'm sorry, I don't understand. Could you try to explain a little more?
...after bringing and explanation of the context you arrive to say this giving and implicit idea that you will be part of this project). Edit: Cross posted with Miss Sparkles...
"You are the chosen one" is a phrase associated with bad novels and worse films. It usually said to someone who has been selected as the head of some idiotic religious cult or as the local god - do not use it! "The chosen one" is more or less a title.
"You are the one." is equally trite (especially since those words appeared in various songs.)
"We chose you." or "You are the one we chose." is what you want.
Haha Paul you were funny and you grasped the meaning of my question. But I still have a question aren't "You are the one" "You are the chosen one" correct in a colloquial way? Do you think they are different?
P.S: Thanks to all of you who answered it immediately.
Sorry pepone, we still don't understand your question. Could you try to explain yourself?
Seriously, "You are the chosen one" should never be used - unless you are (i) making a joke: "Hey everyone! Carlos has managed, by a miracle, to repair the machine! He is The Chosen One!!" [Everyone bows down and laughs...] (ii) you are insane: "I had a dream last night in which a giant monkey told me that I was The Chosen One."
"You are the one" is simply not enough. To make the saying idiomatic, you need a little more information: "Well done, Carlos, you are the one we have selected to join the project!" This is informal.
Right thanks, that's it when I was saying about an "implicit" idea when you use "you are the one" you need to express yourself (another song title haha) to give more information about that respect. About "the chosen one" construction you are right sounds like a bad novel or a worse film haha.
Have a good day everybody
If I say You are the one to a pretty girl, I'm suggesting, in an old-fashioned idiom, that she sets my heart ablaze.
If I say You are the chosen one to someone, I'm suggesting, as Paul says, that I'm a character in some abysmal film or novel, probably recommending to someone ostensibly unsuitable that he or she should lead us all into battle.
It also raises questions about the Chosen People, the Jews. I know it irritates some people to think that some Jews think God chose them rather than anyone else, but let's not go into that. |
