COLUMBUS, Ohio Illinois came into Ohio Stadium and did what no other team has been able to do all season: run its offense to perfection, limit Ohio State’s chances and capitalize on turnovers which all led to a 28-21 upset win over No. 1 Ohio State.

Quarterback Isiah “Juice” Williams led a 400-yard effort by the Illini with four touchdown passes each one to a different receiver and the Illini ground game struck for a season-high 260 yards against a defense that was allowing just 65 rushing yards per game.

Ohio State managed just 336 total yards. Todd Boeckman threw for 156 yards and three interceptions and the rushing attack scored three times, but was limited to 180 yards by an Illinois defense that was led by James Laurinaitis-like J Leman’s 17 tackles.

“This was a hard-fought football game like we knew it would be,” Jim Tressel, Ohio State coach, said. “Our hats are off to Illinois. They did the things they needed to do to win a tough battle. We didn’t do the things we needed to do. We’re extremely proud of our kids. They’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do this year. This stings. We’ve got to pick up and move forward.”

The day started in typical 2007 Ohio State fashion. Boeckman hit Brian Hartline for 65 yards down the right sideline on the game’s first play from scrimmage and Beanie Wells hammered over the left side and into the end zone from 11 yards for a 7-0 Ohio State lead.

Illinois served notice on its first series that this game was going to be anything but typical, though. On its second play, Danie Dufrene burst up the middle and gained 80 yards, setting up a Williams-to-Michael Hoomanawanui touchdown pass of 3 yards that tied the score at 7-all.

On this one rushing play, Illinois would gain more yards rushing than five teams Akron (3), Northwestern (0), Purdue  (4), Michigan State (59) and Wisconsin (12) would combine to rush for all game against the Ohio State defense.

All seemed fine, though, after Boeckman engineered a 9-play, 76-yard drive on the Buckeyes’ second series that ended with Maurice Wells blowing through a hole on the right side, compliments of a Ben Person block, and bursting untouched for a 19-yard touchdown.

Two Ohio State series later, Illinois capitalized via the turnover. Dere Hicks intercepted Boeckman, giving Illinois the ball near midfield. Seven plays later, Williams hit Jacob Willis over the middle for 33-yards and a 14-all tie with three minutes remaining in the first quarter.

In the first 11 minutes of the game, Illinois had scored as many touchdowns against the Ohio State defense as six previous opponents in Ohio Stadium had combined to score.

Neither team got anything going offensively in the second quarter until Illinois went for it on 4th-and-1 from its own 43. Rashard Mendenhall picked up 25 yards over the right tackle and four plays later the Illini were in the end zone. Williams hit a wide-open Brian Gamble for his third touchdown pass of the game and a 21-14 lead going into intermission.

Boeckman led the Buckeyes to a first-and-goal at the Illinois 9 on the first series of the second half. But the drive ended as Boeckman, scrambling out of a swarm of harassing defenders, created space and fired a pass into the end zone that was tipped by an Illini before being intercepted by Antonio Steele.

From there, Williams marched his team 80-yards for a touchdown a 31-yard Williams-to-Marque Wilkins strike and the Buckeyes were in trouble.

Trailing 28-14, Ohio State went back to Beanie Wells and the sophomore delivered. He capped a 76-yard touchdown drive with a 17-yard touchdown run to bring Ohio State to within 7. He would finish with 76 yards rushing.

Illinois ran 6:11 off the clock on its next series before finally punting.

Ohio Sate took over with 9:23 to play, but a third Boeckman interception gave the ball back to Illinois at its own 24 with 8:09 to play. The Illini held the ball for the rest of the game, running 16 plays and converting four third down plays and one fourth down conversion to run the clock out.

End of game. And end of record winning streaks of 28 regular season games and 20 Big Ten Conference games for Ohio State.

The Ohio State football team moves closer to the 2022 season opener against Notre Dame today as the Buckeyes host their spring football game in front of fans at Ohio Stadium.

The Buckeyes entered spring football with several returning stars, such asquarterback C.J. Stroud and running back TreVeyon Henderson but also had plenty of new faces joining the program.

Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles arrived from Oklahoma State in the offseason. The spring game will be the first time Ohio State fans will see the revamped defensive scheme, much of which was installed over the last month.

The spring game will also honor Dwayne Haskins Jr., the former Ohio State star quarterback who died April 9.

Ohio State final spring game score

The Buckeyes offense beat the defense 34-26 in front of an estimated 50,000 fans at Ohio Stadium.

Missed field goal

With returning kicker Noah Ruggles not participating in spring practice, Jake Seibert and walk-ons Jayden Fielding and Garrison Smith have handled placekicking duties.

Fielding missed a 38-yard field goal attempt wide right early in the fourth quarter, while Seibert hit a 42-yarder and Smith made a 38-yarder.

Orlando Pace is in attendance

As noted by the team's official Twitter account, former Buckeye offensive line great Orlando Pace is among those watching today's Ohio State spring game in person.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields and Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward are among the other former OSU players at Ohio Stadium today.

C.J. Stroud's final numbers

With Kyle McCord and Devin Brown rotating at quarterback to start the third quarter, it appears as if C.J. Stroud was done for the afternoon.

Stroud completed 14 of 22 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown.

The Buckeyes offense leads the defense 24-9 at halftime of the annual scrimmage.

Injury update

Defensive end and linebacker Mitchell Melton was injured late in the second quarter and assisted off the field by a pair of trainers.

He was walking gingerly before heading to the locker room.

After missing last season with an injury, Melton has been getting reps at the "jack" position.

Evan Pryor adds third touchdown

Redshirt freshman Evan Pryor added the third touchdown for the Buckeyes when he shed a few tackles and ran 22 yards into the end zone late in the second quarter.

Not only was Pryor elusive in moving through the defense, but he showed a good burst once he took the handoff.

Pryor is one of three scholarship running backs available for the spring game and showed he might be primed to see more carries next season.

Joe Royer pulls in 24-yard touchdown grab

On the second series, tight end Joe Royer caught a 24-yard touchdown thrown by backup quarterback Kyle McCord.

It was a nice grab as Royer held on while being hit by cornerback Jyaire Brown in the end zone.

Royer is competing for the starting tight end spot vacated by Jeremy Ruckert and was identified by quarterback C.J. Stroud last week as one of the players who had broken out in spring practice.

The touchdown gave the offense a 14-0 lead over the defense.

On the previous series that featured the first-team offense against the first-team defense, Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught a 29-yard touchdown from quarterback C.J. Stroud.

Who's at the 'jack?'

Defensive end Jack Sawyer appeared to be lining up at the defensive end-linebacker hybrid position known as the "jack" in defensive coordinator Jim Knowles' defense.

Sawyer twice dropped into pass coverage on the opening series after lining up as an edge rusher.

Starting defense

How did Buckeyes start out in Knowles’ newly installed 4-2-5 defense?

Zach Harrison and Javontae Jean-Baptiste were the defensive ends with Jerron Cage and Taron Vincent as the defensive tackles with the Buckeyes’ first-team defense.

Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers were the linebackers.

The secondary featured Ronnie Hickman as the free safety with Tanner McCalister as the nickel safety and Josh Proctor as the strong safety.

Cameron Brown and Denzel Burke were then the outside cornerbacks.

Who's unavailable for Ohio State?

Wide receiver Kamryn Babb and linebacker Palaie Gaoteote are among 16 players who are unavailable for this afternoon’s scrimmage.

Babb’s absence is not unexpected as coach Ryan Day said he suffered a “little bump in the road” a couple of weeks ago, a setback that made a return in spring practice unlikely.

He had been fully healthy for the start of spring practice after missing last season with an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

The list of OSU's other inactive players includes a handful who have been unavailable for most of this spring: linebacker Ryan Batsch, offensive lineman Ben Christman, wide receiver Corban Cleveland, running back Marcus Crowley, safety Jantzen Dunn, defensive end Tyler Friday, offensive lineman Josh Fryar, tight end Zach Herbstreit, linebacker Cade Kacherski, offensive lineman Trey Leroux, offensive lineman Zen Michalski, linebacker Elias Myers, safety Lathan Ransom and tight end Mitch Rossi.

How does the scoring work?

Instead of dividing up the roster into "Scarlet" and "Gray" teams, the format of the spring game will feature the offense versus the defense.

The offense will follow traditional scoring, receiving six points for a touchdown followed by a PAT and three points for a field goal, while the defense will pick up six points for a touchdown, three points for a turnover, three points for a three-and-out, two points for a sack and a point for a forced punt.

The first three quarters will last 12-15 minutes. The fourth quarterback will be 10 minutes with a running clock.

Dwayne Haskins being honored today

Among the already visible tributes to the late Ohio State quarterback is the fact that Haskins' initials are on the field at the 7-yard lines. Haskins wore the No. 7 when he played for the Buckeyes.
