What to do if you did not receive your EBT Benefits

If you did not receive your EBT benefits for the month, it could be due to several reasons, including:

• You did not Recertify
• Failure to submit the SAR-7 report on time
• You no longer meet the eligibility requirements
• Failure to comply with employment requirements
• Missed an appointment with the CDSS
• Did not respond to a letter from the CDSS asking for information
• You committed food stamps fraud

If you disagree with a decision by the county CDSS office to cutoff your SNAP benefits (CalFresh), you can appeal and ask for a hearing in writing or by phone.

The CDSS hearing office must get your appeal within 90 days of the decision to cut off your benefits.

If you want to keep your benefits during the appeal, your appeal must be received within 10 days of the date the notice was mailed.

However, even if you appeal within 10 days, CDSS cannot continue your SNAP benefits beyond the end of your most recent certification period.

Generally, those who are eligible are those whose income falls somewhere within 130% of the poverty threshold.

However, if there is a person/persons in the household who is/are elderly or disabled, this may change the income requirements. You should check on your state's SNAP webpage to determine the qualifications in your state and whether your family is eligible for assistance.

When EBT Benefits Refill

If you have already been approved for SNAP and have received your EBT card, you may be running out of supplies for the month and are wondering exactly when you can expect your benefits to be replenished.

First, let's talk about the day of the month when you can expect your EBT card to refill. With this program, food assistance is provided once per month, but this doesn't mean that everyone in the state receives their assistance at the same time.

Many states have a schedule of deposits during the first ten days of the month. This could depend on your assigned account number, the county you reside in, or even your last name.

For example, California schedules food stamp deposits based on the cardholder's case number, while Pennsylvania schedules the deposits based on counties.  You can often look up your state's EBT deposit schedule on their SNAP webpage.

If you have had your EBT account for two months or longer, you can perhaps download your state's EBT app to help you determine when you last received benefits. That will be a reliable predictor of what day you will receive them during the coming months.

While there may be times that you are anxiously waiting for the next deposit to stock up your pantry, there also likely could be months when you have not used the full amount of your SNAP assistance. That's okay!

You won't lose the leftover benefits. They will roll over to the next month, and the amount of your assistance will not be adjusted due to any unused funds.

How Long Is EBT Good For?

Issued benefits are good for one year. So, for example, if you receive $100 in assistance in January, that $100 will not expire until January of the next year, and your EBT card will be active for that period of time.

However, depending on your state, they may ask you to send in assessment forms and documents every three months or so to determine whether you are still eligible for benefits. If you fail to do so, or if they determine that you are no longer eligible, they may halt deposits to your EBT card.

Using EBT Benefits

Now that you know how and when you will receive your benefits, you should know how to use them. We'll give you some information and instruction on how to do so.

How To Use Your EBT Benefits

To use your EBT benefits, you first must choose an authorized store. This would be most grocers and convenience stores such as Walmart, Dillon's, Kroger, or Target.

However, some local or privately owned stores may not be eligible. To be sure, you can use the SNAP Retail Locator to figure out if the stores nearest you will accept your EBT card.

Continuing on, you should make sure you have a good understanding of which items are EBT eligible and which are not.

Foodstuffs such as grains, dairy, canned goods, frozen goods, and snack items are all eligible. However, you cannot purchase pre-prepared foods such as cakes from the bakery or meals from the deli.

In addition, alcohol, hygiene items, sanitary items, diapers, medications, cleaning supplies, and pet foods are all unable to be purchased with your EBT card.

When you have selected all the items you plan on purchasing, head to the cash register. Separate what you will be purchasing with your EBT card from what you will be purchasing with cash.

Use your EBT card as you would a debit card after informing the cashier that you will be purchasing the items with SNAP benefits. It will ask for your PIN and accept only the amount that is allotted to you on your card. If any items are not eligible, they will not be covered by the EBT card.

After the purchase is completed, the cashier will provide you with a receipt. The receipt will detail the amount that was deducted from your EBT allowance by item.

How Much Cash Can You Withdraw From Your EBT Card?

It's important to note that those using an EBT card with only SNAP benefits will not be able to withdraw cash from this account. This is because these benefits are solely for food, and it must be recorded that the benefits were used for eligible items.

However, if you have an EBT card with cash benefits, you can withdraw cash. The amount that can be withdrawn depends on both your account balance and the ATM that you use.

Technically, you can withdraw up to the entire amount of your account balance, but each ATM will have a different limit.

Can A Family Member Use My EBT Card?

Yes, however, the family member either should be a part of your household or an authorized user. If the family member lives in your home, such as a spouse or a child, they can use your EBT card at any authorized location. This is because they are considered to be a part of the household that is receiving SNAP benefits.

There may be someone else you trust who is not in your household. Maybe this is a grandparent or caregiver, and it would be very helpful and convenient for them to be able to use your EBT card on occasion. You can contact your state's SNAP program and add them as an authorized user.

Of course, you have the option to just give your card information to this trusted person, but it isn't recommended. To protect yourself and the person using the card, it's best to add them as an authorized user.

Most important of all, you should be sure that the EBT card is being used for its intended purpose. The items that are purchased with the card should be for your household.
