Daniel Carlson’s 47-yard field goal as time expired in overtime Sunday gave the Raiders a 35-32 win against the Chargers to send Las Vegas to the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season.

If the game ended in a tie, both teams would have advanced to the playoffs. Instead, the Raiders decided to kick the winning field goal, and they will now visit the Bengals in the first wild-card game of next weekend at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday.

The Chargers trailed by 15 points in the fourth quarter and rallied to tie the score. It was an improbable comeback as Justin Herbert converted on six consecutive fourth-down attempts to extend the game, including throwing a touchdown on 4th and 21 to Joshua Palmer and then throwing a touchdown to Mike Williams as time expired in regulation.

Herbert finished 34-for-64 for 383 yards and three touchdowns.

Josh Jacobs carried the offensive load for the Raiders, rushing for 132 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. None was bigger than the 10 yards he gained on 3rd and 4 with 38 second left in overtime. A gain of less than four yards would’ve resulted in Carlson attempting a field goal from more than 55 yards, but Jacobs' rush set up the winning distance.

The Raiders (10-7) won their last four games to make the playoffs as the 5 seed while the Chargers (9-8) lost three of their last four games, including at Houston in Week 16.

Projecting the Raiders' chances of advancing

The Athletic's model quantifies every NFL playoff team's chances of progressing through the playoffs. How does it see the Raiders?

It actually has them rated below their No. 5 seeding, giving them the sixth-best chance of any AFC team to win the AFC or Super Bowl. See the full breakdown below:

Justin Herbert's heroics aren't enough to send the Chargers to the playoffs

What does it look like when a player shoulders the weight of a franchise? What does it look like when a player refuses to keel over, refuses to give in, refuses to let his teammates and his city and his fan base down?

It looks like Justin Herbert. It looks like conversion after conversion on do-or-die play after do-or-die play. It looks like an improbable and miraculous 15-point comeback. Each time this roller-coaster season hung in the balance in the fourth quarter, Herbert pulled a rabbit out of a hat. He created majestic magic in the grandest of theaters on the biggest of stages.

Herbert is special enough to be playing for a championship.

The Chargers let him down.

And now, they will spend the next six months trying to ensure it never happens again.

Derek Carr is set to make his first playoff appearance after 8 NFL seasons

After eight seasons, Derek Carr has seen it all.

When the Raiders blew a 15-point lead in eight minutes Sunday night, with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert completing six fourth-down passes, he had zero emotion. The game was heading to overtime? That’s fine. Let’s go win.

“I’m almost numb to the roller coaster,” Carr said after the 35-32 win over the Chargers. “Nate Peterman came up to me and is like, ‘Dude, my freaking stomach during that. This 15-point lead, then it’s gone, then we go score, then they score, and it’s unbelievable.’”

Carr might as well have yawned.

“I don’t know, there is something in my heart that maybe I’ve seen too many hard times,” Carr said. “I’ve seen some good times here, and I just kind of stay like that.”

The Raiders are going to the playoffs for the first time since 2016, and will face the Bengals in the wild-card round Saturday in Cincinnati. It will be Carr’s first postseason appearance of his career after his missed that 2016 playoff game after breaking his ankle two weeks earlier.

A wild game to cap a wild season that sends the Raiders to the playoffs for the first time since 2016

Delirium.

Players stormed the field and swarmed one another. Silver and black confetti fell from the roof. The cheers from the crowd at Allegiant Stadium blended with the bass of Too Short’s “Blow the Whistle.”

Daniel Carlson’s field goal was good, giving the Raiders their 35-32 overtime win over the Chargers on Sunday, sending them to their first postseason appearance in five years and setting up a matchup with the Bengals at 1:30 p.m. PT on Saturday in Cincinnati in the wild-card round. It was a fittingly wild end to a wild game that capped off a wild regular season.

He rumbles 44 yards before fumbling the ball and it goes out at the 1-yard line. What a break for the Raiders because if it would've gone out of the end zone, it would be Chargers ball. That is one of the most weird rules in the NFL, but it is the rule.

Could the tie scenario play into this game?

Chargers-Raiders is a remarkable game based on the fact that if there is a winner and a loser, the winning team makes the AFC playoffs. But if there is not a winner and not a loser — meaning the teams tie — they both make it.

These teams aren't likely to take a knee on every snap for 60 minutes. But the question is whether that circumstance will factor into play calling and decision making tonight, and how.

Reed: What I'm expecting from the Raiders tonight

This is going to come down to how the Raiders’ offensive line performs.

Last time around, the Chargers dominated them up front in their Week 4 win. The Raiders couldn’t pass protect or run block, and the offense was largely stuck in a rut outside of a run in the third quarter. That was the first game that Tom Cable had his current offensive line in place — with first-round pick Alex Leatherwood moved in to right guard and Brandon Parker inserted at right tackle — and the unit has improved since then, but that doesn’t guarantee they’ll avoid another rough showing in this one.

If they play poorly, it’s hard to imagine the Raiders keeping up with Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense. If they play well, in addition to the potential return of Darren Waller, the Raiders can legitimately pull this off.

Tafur: What I'm expecting from the Raiders tonight

While I think this game actually comes down which team runs the ball better, all eyes will be on quarterback Derek Carr.

It’s the biggest game in his eight years with the Raiders, and with a win he will have to chance to make his playoff debut. (He broke his leg two weeks before the Raiders’ playoff appearance in 2016.)

Carr is 56-70 over his career, and though wins should not be a quarterback stat because it doesn’t factor in all the bad free-agent signings and draft picks that the Raiders made, he still carries that with him. Many will use how he does Sunday night, and if the Raiders win, to judge whether he is worth signing to a new contract for another five years. Maybe even team owner Mark Davis.

What could be next for Rich Bisaccia?

Rich Bisaccia has made a point of not making this season about him. After 38 years as an assistant coach, Bisaccia took over for Jon Gruden in October, and the interim Raiders coach has deferred credit to his coordinators and players at every turn.

But now, with the Raiders at 9-7 and having a chance to make the playoffs Sunday, it’s all about Bisaccia.

Forget all the Jim Harbaugh rumors — which are coming from everywhere but Las Vegas. With a win against the Chargers, Bisaccia seemingly has a chance to remove the interim label from his job description and return next season.

Back in Week 4, the Chargers topped the Raiders, 28-14, in a convincing win on “Monday Night Football.”

Will Derek Carr finally play in the postseason for the Raiders?

Though the Raiders made the playoffs in 2016, they haven’t been in a win-and-you’re-in situation in the final week of the regular season since 2011. Coincidentally, they were also playing the Chargers in a home game that year, took a loss and missed the playoffs. It’s rather obvious, but the most important player when it comes to avoiding that outcome will be quarterback Derek Carr.

Carr led the Raiders to the playoffs in 2016 but suffered a season-ending injury in the penultimate game of the season and has never actually appeared in a playoff game. If he can help his team win and stay healthy Sunday, that’ll change. Obviously that’s an opportunity that gets him excited.

“We realize what’s at stake this week,” Carr said. “It’s exciting. It really is. But I do have all the confidence in the world in our team to be ready to play. We’re not gonna be too high on the emotions of it and all that kind of stuff. We know what we need to do, we know what’s gotten us here to this point, and it’s going to be hard to do. It’s going to be hard to do against a really good football team. They beat us. They got after us, especially in that first half when we played them. They came out, they were intense, they were flying around and playing good football. We know it’s gonna be a tough task and a tall task, but I’m excited. You’ve always got to put the ball down and compete.”

Popper: What the Chargers need to do to win tonight

The Chargers need to do three things in order to beat the Raiders and make their first playoff appearance since 2018: Stop the run, get pressure on Derek Carr, and play a clean game offensively. This was the recipe in their first meeting with Las Vegas in Week 4, a 28-14 win at SoFi Stadium on “Monday Night Football.”

The Raiders managed just 40 rushing yards on 18 carries in that game. Carr was pressured 22 times. The Chargers did not turn the ball over, and they were only called for three offensive penalties.

Justin Herbert has been sensational in prime time so far in his young NFL career. In five prime-time games, including that Monday night win over the Raiders earlier this season, Herbert has completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,418 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also rushed for two scores. I am expecting another big performance from Herbert. And I am expecting a Chargers victory.

Don't expect a postseason run out of the Raiders

If you would have told Raiders fans before the season that they’d have a “win-and-you’re-in” game in Week 18 to make the playoffs, I’m sure they would have been happy to sign up for that. This group deserves a lot of credit. From Jon Gruden to Henry Ruggs III, it feels like they’ve had about four different seasons. But here they are with a chance to get in.

There’s not really anything that the Raiders do great. They’re 20th in EPA per drive and 13th in success rate offensively. They’re 27th in EPA per drive and 18th in success rate defensively. And they have a -68 point differential, which ranks 22nd. If they make the playoffs, they’ll be the only team to do so with a negative point differential.

Having said that, if you’re a Raiders fan, the appropriate response is probably: Who cares? This franchise has made the playoffs just once in the past 18 years. You’re not asking for perfection. You’re asking for a seat at the table.

The ceiling for this team is probably the divisional round, but good for them for staying in the hunt this long.

{{monthName}} {{day}}, {{year}} at {{hour12}}:{{minuteTwoDigit}} {{dayPeriod}}

What makes the Chargers a postseason threat

The Chargers have a couple things going for them. One, Justin Herbert is capable of putting the team on his back. He’s been incredible this year and ranks fourth in EPA per pass play. Entering Week 18, the Chargers’ offense ranks third in EPA per drive, behind only the Packers and the Chiefs. They are fifth in success rate. That type of offensive efficiency makes the Chargers legitimately dangerous.

The other positive is they’re getting healthy on defense at the right time. They had their full first-team secondary on the field last week for just the third time all season.

This is a flawed team. They’ve had offensive line issues, and their defense ranks 28th in EPA per drive and 31st in success rate. And it doesn’t help that getting in could mean going to Kansas City in the first round. The truth is they’re probably a year away from being a real contender. But if you’re a Chargers fan, you know you have Herbert on your side, and that’s always going to give you a chance.

A record and a playoff berth on the line for Raiders' Hunter Renfrow

He admittedly benefits from an extra game, but Hunter Renfrow is on the cusp of Raiders history. He has 99 catches, five short of tying the franchise single-season record for a receiver set by Hall of Famer Tim Brown in 1997. (Tight end Darren Waller set the overall record last season with 107 catches.) Renfrow will have a shot to top both marks when the Raiders host the Chargers on Sunday night in a game where the Raiders’ first playoff appearance since 2016 will likely be on the line.

"Getting to the playoffs is the more important thing than stats will ever be," Renfrow said. "For me personally, I never want to get away from that. No matter how the stats can affect your contract or how they can affect your lifestyle because you have more money, I never want it to get to that point. I want to always enjoy the game and always enjoy time with my teammates.

“I never want to get to the point where wins and losses don’t matter.”

Playing for a tie? Not likely

Much has been made of the fact that a tie would technically guarantee that both teams reach the playoffs, while a loss would likely knock out either team — though the Raiders still could qualify with a loss if Jacksonville beats Indianapolis and Pittsburgh tops Baltimore. Given that it would be exceedingly tough to orchestrate a tie without looking like illegal match-fixing, it should be safe to assume that both teams will try to win.

The fact that both are on the cusp might say a lot about Las Vegas interim head coach Rich Bisaccia, who has managed to take an offense ranked 20th in expected points added and a defense ranked 25th in the same metric and brought them to 9-7.

On the other hand, Chargers coach Brandon Staley should probably check in and see why an offense helmed by Justin Herbert needed five game-winning drives — the second most in the league — to achieve the same record as the division-rival Raiders.

The Chargers secondary is getting healthy at the right time

The Chargers' Week 17 win over the Broncos marked the first time since Week 1 that the Chargers' starting secondary — Asante Samuel Jr., Michael Davis, Chris Harris Jr., Derwin James and Nasir Adderley — was healthy for a full game. And that allowed head coach Brandon Staley to actually implement the defense he schemed and envisioned when he first took this job in January.

Most notably, Staley got to move James around as his queen on the chessboard. James played safety. He lined up as a slot corner. He played on the edge. He played money — or the linebacker-safety hybrid role — in dime packages. James’ five pass-rushing snaps were his most since before the bye week, according to Pro Football Focus.

Staley was able to sprinkle in the “Nitro” package that the Chargers showed often during their training camp practices, with James moving into the slot and Harris moving back to safety. Harris’ seven snaps at safety were his most since Week 6, according to PFF. With Alohi Gilman back, as well, Staley was also able to mix in his dime package. The Chargers finally had their secondary pieces, and it showed in the way they played.

How the Raiders and Chargers can get into the playoffs

The Chargers entered the weekend as the AFC's No. 7 seed, ahead of the Raiders, thanks to a head-to-head win in Week 4. But the Chargers must beat or tie the Raiders on Sunday in order to make the postseason.

Winning the Raiders-Chargers game is also the easiest way for Las Vegas to make the playoffs. But the Raiders can also get in with a tie against the Chargers and a Colts loss to the Jaguars, or with a Colts loss and a Steelers loss or tie to the Ravens.
