Why are pickles zero calories but cucumbers do?

Why do pickles have no calories

Pickles are cucumbers soaked in evil” as the phrase goes and it’s circulating all over the net, printed on shirts and other merchandise that it even has its own page on facebook.

Whatever the true meaning behind the phrase, pickles are definitely not evil and are in fact proven to be healthy disregarding the taste since not all people love eating pickled cucumbers.

Pickles, like any other fruits and vegetables, are a good source of fiber, antioxidants, iron, magnesium, calcium, and are excellent in maintaining a healthy digestive system. Because of the high fiber content in pickles, daily intake is believed to help prevent the risk of developing cancer of different types.

Currently, there are numerous selections of pickles that are produced and can be purchased in the market. The process in which pickles are made, that includes the different spices and herbs used in the fermentation, are said to have its own health benefits.

Pickles are normally low in sugar, free from fat, and low in calorie content. Some manufacturers even claim to have zero calories in its product label to attract the interest of the health conscious population. However, zero calorie pickles and other food products do contain small amounts of calories in it which are called free food”.

Free food refers to the variety of food that has less than 5 grams of calories per serving.  The calorie content is so small that FDA permits the use of zero calories” ad (per serving) in the labels of free food products considering that these types of food have little caloric effect on the individual. Be that as it may, one should take into consideration that too much eating or over indulging oneself on free food products like zero calorie pickles, calories in it can still accumulate in one’s body system.

  12. Yea I realized that this was a stupid post soon after I made it, but threads have a tough time dying here I guess haha. Here's why it was a stupid post: 100g cucumber = 15 calories 28g cucumber = 4 calories Jar of pickles nutrition label: 1 28g serving = 0 calories These fit perfectly together. For nutrition labels, 4 cals = 0 cals because of rounding.

Also, I don't do this but if I was going to be real strict about my 0 cal counting, I would count every serving of 0 calorie food as 4 calories. Except water, as FourtoEight said.

  16. Because you see, when you pickle cucumbers, magic happens. The calorie fairies come down and make the cucumber salty and delicious and most importantly calorie free! But srsly, pickles have the same amount of cals as cucumbers, when you go by mass. The reason it says 0 is that the nutritional facts are for a mass of 28g; this amounts to 4 cals but USDA regulation allows them to round down to 0. If you were to find the calories of 28g of cucumber, it was be 4cals or less.

In any case, don't eat too much cuz yea they are calorie sparce but i think 28g has like 500mg of sodium which is like 20percent of the value u need, so if you eat too much u will retain water, and look puffy and "gain" weight.

I actually am eating jars of pickles. But even then, at 5 cals a pickle thats only 80 cals/jar (it says theres 16 pickles/jar). And to me it looks like there's more like 8-10 pickles/jar.... so whatever. The only thing is the sodium and my potential high blood pressure..... but this pickle thing will probably be temporary anyway.
