Are dum dums good for weight loss?

Find out what keeps you fat and then do something about it. Sick of being fat? Shed your fatlogic here.

When it comes to crazy, too-good-to-be-true ways of losing weight, the Hollywood A-list keep them coming. There was Beyoncé's famed maple syrup and cayenne pepper weight-loss concoction, Elizabeth Hurley’s watercress soup diet and, now KK's Lollipop Diet.

But hold up there, this one isn't new. Remember when Paris Hilton, Madonna and Britney Spears were reported to use appetite-suppressing lollipops to manage their weight?

So why is The Lollipop Diet craze making a comeback? (Even if Instagram did take the post down for a brief time.) Does that mean there really is something in sucking sweets to shed lbs?

WH investigates…

THE LOLLIPOP DIET: HOW DOES IT WORK?

Essentially, these are sweets containing appetite-suppressing ingredients. For example, Power Pops (which were big first-time round), contained hoodia, citrimax and guarana, which, derived from plant sources, were said to combat hunger pangs, while boosting energy levels and curbing cravings.

The latest sweet on the shelf is the Flat Tummy Company Lollipop, available in grape, berry, watermelon and yellow apple flavours.

According to Kim K, they're "unreal" and, says the website, they contain satiereal, an active ingredient extracted from "natural plants" (aren't all plants natural?). Simply have one or two a day - or whenever hunger strikes (upto 12 a day - yes 12!) - to stop unnecessary snacking in its tracks, is the claim. And with just 35 cals per pop they shouldn't break the bank...

DOES THE LOLLIPOP DIET ACTUALLY WORK?

Lovisa Nilsson, nutritionist at leading health and fitness app Lifesum weighs in: "Sucking a lollipop is contradicting the effect of curbing hunger, as when you suck a lollipop, you salivate, which sends a signal from your brain to your stomach that food is there and to proceed, leaving you feeling more hungry before you eat your meal."

Ok, so probably not such a great idea if you want to shed some pounds. But it can’t do any harm, right?

"If you continue sucking these lollipops three times a day or more, it could lead to stomach ulcers, as you are swallowing too much saliva with no food in it," says Nilsson. "This could lead to too much acid building up in your stomach. And you have to wonder what these lollipops are made up, aside from the 'appetite-suppressing' ingredients. Likely artificial sweeteners, which can be consequently worse for you than a tiny amount of sugar or natural alternatives."

Indeed, check out the ingredients list of the Flat Tummy Co lollipops and what appears first? Cane sugar and brown rice syrup. Two of the 50 types of sugar you should know about.

In short? Don’t be a sucker and give this weird diet craze a miss.
