The snow!!! Need advice

Hey guys, tomorrow I am going to be driving up to Big Bear tomorrow morning. I am running stock wheels and tires(super sport pilots). I am concerned that the car will not have any traction and also that they may force me to turn around if I do not have cables.

My question is has anyone ever ran Cables on the car and if so which type, I know it seems silly but I have to be prepared just in case. Honestly I dont think 2-3 inches is going to be a big deal but I would rather be safe than sorry.

Any advice is appreciated!

Well... You really can't drive in snow with MPSS (or any summer performance tire for that matter). If the roads are clear and it's not too cold (e.g., above 5c) you may get away unscathed, but the instant you hit snow on a road with those tires you might as well be driving on an ice-rink with slicks.

If there's any chance of running into snow/cold, then I'd recommend renting a vehicle with at least all-seasons for the trip - imo it's just not worth the risk cracking up your car or possibly hurting yourself or someone else.

Well I'm in Utah and we are having a bit of a small snow storm right now. I'm in your exact same boat, but I have the cup 2's!! And it honestly wasn't THAT bad. I made sure to drive slow, give plenty of a gap between other cars, and pay lots of attention to people around me.

The only thing that was a little hairy was switching lanes through slush and driving on that. I could feel it sliding a little bit and it was kinda unsure, but I didn't really feel like it was going to loose control. I'd just say be really careful. But getting better tires would be the best thing to do.

I drive the Tahoe run all the time. Everyone here is being too nice. You are an idiot if you drive in a snow control condition with the Super Sports and you are risking other people's lives. Don't do it. And they will turn you around with summer tires. It's chains or at least all seasons M+S rated. And I believe the RS is a no chains allowed car according to the owners manual.

I sat dead still on 80 last night going up for hours due to a really bad accident. And that was people with chains and all seasons. It is super cold this weekend and those MPSS are a death waiting to happen at those temperatures.

Its also been like 30º or a little bit less here. But that was a flat freeway, not mountain high ways. So I think he is giving some good advice above

Has anyone used cables or has anyone drove in the snow with the super sport pilots.

It is obviously not recommended because its a summer tire. . . We are living on a budget to afford this car though so bare with me.

Also are you even able to put cables on the car without hurting anything?!!

Thanks

We got about six inches here. I'm on cup 2's and have been driving fine on the snow. BE CAREFUL. Drive like you have zero traction. Because you literally have ZERO traction. Don't turn fast at all.

Don't even consider Cup2s in the snow. You're a danger to everyone else and you won't get where you're trying to go. They are worse than useless. The manual says no chains due to clearance on the 19"s. Cables may or may not fit.

I've crossed the Sierras on the stock pilot super sports for it's maiden voyage (bought the car in NV and live in CA) with out any issues but I wouldn't recommend it. There was barely any snow on the road and I still felt a little squirelly on certain sports since the compound just gets way too stiff to grip at lower temps.

If you need to go to the snow, I would just recommend renting a car. I usually rent an SUV from Turo when I really need to.

Park the RS and find an alternative. Definitely not worth the risk IMO.

I am new here and in the process of buying a 2017 RS. I live in Canada in a place where winter tires are a must. The only thing saving you is the all wheel drive. Snow tires have a soft compound that will flex and grip in the cold. Summer tires will be like hockey pucks and will have zero grip in snow. If you hit black ice at speed or have to brake suddenly you will be in serious trouble. I have a E46 325 xi with winter tires and the car just rips in the snow or on icy roads. Without the tires I would be in a ditch.
Good luck!!!!

As others have said, don't be silly. Cables should work in this car, but put them on right, it's really easy to get it wrong and then they'll break loose and gouge the hell out of your fenders. I still wouldn't go up into the sierras during a chain control with cables and summer tires. You could destroy your car or someone else's.

I go up to the sierras all the time. Usually in a Subaru Outback with snow tires. Few cars are better in snow than that one. When the state is running chain checkpoints, its so slippery that I get into trouble even with that car sometimes and have to put on chains. The main roads are generally fine, but any side road is very hard to navigate. You'd be shocked how fast snow can fall in the mountains, and how little it takes to make a road hard to drive. With summer tires, you'll probably slide down the first incline...sideways.

I seriously do not understand the mindset of someone who scrapes together 42k for a car and yet 1.5k to protect his investment, himself, and those around him is too much.

As mentioned, RS is a no chains/cables car. Rent a car for this trip and then look for a set of winter tires for the RS or get at least some all seasons. I think the snow/ice tires like in the OE options may allow use without chains/cables since the car states not to use them and is AWD with proper snow/ice tire. But, check with your location for their exact rules.

The PSS are definitely better in rain/light snow than the Cup2. In a pinch the PSS will do ok in a bit of snow, but I'd avoid it if you can. If you're planning on driving through more than an in of snow I'd highly recommend getting a proper set of winter tires.

Which Michelin tire is best in snow?

The MICHELIN® X-Ice® SNOW tire offers shorter ice and snow stopping distances thanks to the exceptional grip provided by having two types of full-depth 3D sipes for an increased claw effect on snow and ice and for long-lasting biting edges.

Are Michelin Pilot sport 4S good in the snow?

The Pilot Sport 4S excels in warm dry and wet conditions, so like all Max Performance Summer tires, is not intended to be serviced, stored nor driven in near- and below-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

Are Michelin tires good in snow?

The most recent addition to Michelin's stable of winter tires, the Michelin X-Ice Snow is designed to provide ultimate winter traction, even on snow and ice. Updating their time-proven winter tread compound, the X Ice Snow is built with Michelin's FleX-Ice 2.0 compound, which is engineered to bite into ice and snow.
