Well... You really can't drive in snow with MPSS (or any summer performance tire for that matter). If the roads are clear and it's not too cold (e.g., above 5c) you may get away unscathed, but the instant you hit snow on a road with those tires you might as well be driving on an ice-rink with slicks. 2018 Audi TTRS , 2018 Chevy Bolt crepr12· RegisteredJoined Jul 30, 2016 ·2,295 Posts #4 · Jan 21, 2018

Well I'm in Utah and we are having a bit of a small snow storm right now. I'm in your exact same boat, but I have the cup 2's!! And it honestly wasn't THAT bad. I made sure to drive slow, give plenty of a gap between other cars, and pay lots of attention to people around me. 2018 race red LE Save Share Reply Quote GoodbyeGolfR· Premium MemberJoined Mar 25, 2016 ·1,081 Posts #7 · Jan 21, 2018
I drive the Tahoe run all the time. Everyone here is being too nice. You are an idiot if you drive in a snow control condition with the Super Sports and you are risking other people's lives. Don't do it. And they will turn you around with summer tires. It's chains or at least all seasons M+S rated. And I believe the RS is a no chains allowed car according to the owners manual. Don't even consider Cup2s in the snow. You're a danger to everyone else and you won't get where you're trying to go. They are worse than useless. The manual says no chains due to clearance on the 19"s. Cables may or may not fit. I've crossed the Sierras on the stock pilot super sports for it's maiden voyage (bought the car in NV and live in CA) with out any issues but I wouldn't recommend it. There was barely any snow on the road and I still felt a little squirelly on certain sports since the compound just gets way too stiff to grip at lower temps. Park the RS and find an alternative. Definitely not worth the risk IMO. MY 2017 FoRS | RS1 | Nitrous Blue | Forged Alloys | Moonroof | Mountune | Whiteline | OZ Racing north of 60rs· RegisteredJoined Jan 19, 2018 ·44 Posts #14 · Jan 21, 2018
I am new here and in the process of buying a 2017 RS. I live in Canada in a place where winter tires are a must. The only thing saving you is the all wheel drive. Snow tires have a soft compound that will flex and grip in the cold. Summer tires will be like hockey pucks and will have zero grip in snow. If you hit black ice at speed or have to brake suddenly you will be in serious trouble. I have a E46 325 xi with winter tires and the car just rips in the snow or on icy roads. Without the tires I would be in a ditch. Save Share Reply Quote O Joined Apr 17, 2017 ·301 Posts #15 · Jan 21, 2018
As others have said, don't be silly. Cables should work in this car, but put them on right, it's really easy to get it wrong and then they'll break loose and gouge the hell out of your fenders. I still wouldn't go up into the sierras during a chain control with cables and summer tires. You could destroy your car or someone else's. I seriously do not understand the mindset of someone who scrapes together 42k for a car and yet 1.5k to protect his investment, himself, and those around him is too much. MN_RS· RegisteredJoined Jun 25, 2015 ·1,691 Posts #17 · Jan 21, 2018

As mentioned, RS is a no chains/cables car. Rent a car for this trip and then look for a set of winter tires for the RS or get at least some all seasons. I think the snow/ice tires like in the OE options may allow use without chains/cables since the car states not to use them and is AWD with proper snow/ice tire. But, check with your location for their exact rules. 1984 GGM Civic 2000S (just custom) Save Share Reply Quote radodrill· RegisteredJoined Aug 6, 2017 ·86 Posts #19 · Jan 21, 2018
The PSS are definitely better in rain/light snow than the Cup2. In a pinch the PSS will do ok in a bit of snow, but I'd avoid it if you can. If you're planning on driving through more than an in of snow I'd highly recommend getting a proper set of winter tires. |
