Cooked steak in fridge for 7 days Reddit

Been having trouble eating due to health complications (not mental, gastro problems). Yesterday I felt SO hungry for the first time in a while, and I treated myself to a really nice steak, some potatoes, and grilled peppers. Trouble is, I haven't been able to finish the meal yet. How long will my steak be good for? I'm really excited to be able to finish it, but even after 24h I'm scared its going to be wasted. I can give it to one of my parents if it'll go bad soon, but will I be able to eat it tomorrow afternoon or even Monday? Id like to save it for myself if it'll last. Not to be greedy or anything, was just super excited to have cooked myself such a big and kinda healthy meal! But alas, my eyes were bigger than my stomach lol.

Tldr: how long will cooked steak and potatoes last for in the fridge? Cooked way too much yesterday and wanna know if I can save it for tomorrow or Monday, or if I should give it to one of my parents so its not wasted.

It 100% depends on the dish and the meat. The longest I've gone was just under two weeks for foods that had added preserving factors, like a higher acid content from pickled pork in rice and beans or lots of vinegar or citrus in a soup or curry. Bonus for super spicy foods too. Ultimately I don't trust either arbitrary timelines or the dates on packages as much as I trust my nose, my eyes (looking for that grey/green discoloration), or my hands (slimy feeling on cold meat). Even the slightest hint of green color on beef and pork in particular and it's going in the can. Generally, I'll eat leftovers within a week without checking twice. At that week mark, it's all in the nose for me.

I'll also add that I notice each meat has its own unique scent profile of what's normal/what's "off," and getting to know those and trust that sense is the most helpful thing to me. A big LPT there that's more applicable for raw foods is to take the opportunity to do a side by side where you can- i.e. If there's a little yogurt left in the old container and you're not totally sure, open the new one and smell both. Smelling the difference, you'll know

Part of it depends on how whether the meat was cooked when very fresh or not, and whether it was refrigerated quickly after cooking, and how well it is stored (e.g. how much air is in contact with the meat dish; whether the sauce it is in could also be deteriorating, and how cold your refrigerator is).

Meats should be good for 4-5 days. Some people will push that to 6-7 days, and I will (on occasion) but I have also sometimes noticed an "off" smell or taste at that point, so it is a judgement call.

I like to make big enough portions for leftovers, so I discipline myself to freeze food that I'm not eating up within a few days, and use a Sharpie marker to label it with a note such as "Cooked on Sept 27th; frozen Oct 1st" that way I know how old it is, and that if I remove it from the freezer it needs to be eaten right away and not left in the fridge more days at that point.

It is really easy to freeze portions of leftovers in freezer bags.
