Do rubber bands move your jaw or teeth reddit

Hi, Currently have had braces for ~6 months and my teeth look mostly straight, now during my recent orthodontist appointment(2 days ago) they put rubber bands in my mouth again. Now I don't see any point in having the pain of rubber bands again, but would it matter if I used them or not? Like would my teeth unstraighten over time?

Dude don't you dare think about going without those elastics, they align your upper and lower jaw to resolve bite issues and to give you a better smile. It's the penultimate step or final step depending on your situation and crucial. Do as your ortho says and you will have beautiful gnashers soon since elastics speed up the process since your ortho won't have a lot to deal with if your teeth are straight and your bite is aligned. Just think how much you've dealt with now and how screwed you will be if you decided to forego an important step like that, you don't want to be back at square 1 in a few years time.

Wearing elastics helps keep your bite and jaw positioned in the right spots. Braces sometimes aren't able to move your teeth in the exact right spot, but the elastics can. I've had to have them a couple times where they have been in different positions, depending on the results my ortho was trying to get. It's best to wear them so you can get your braces off faster!

Do what your orthodontist says. They have given you bands for a reason!

I've been so bad with this. My ortho gave me rubber bands about a month ago but I only wore them for a few days before completely swearing them off. I'm probably going to regret it but for some reason, they always give me the worst headache whenever I wear them (literally). D:

That will pass once you get used to them. When I first had braces as a kid, my ortho wouldn't remove them til I wore the bands to get my bite where he wanted it. I probably added at least 5 months to my treatment bc I refused to do it.

You aren't the doctor. Follow their instructions. It's why you pay them the big money, because they know what they're doing. Braces is one of those things that half assing it now will just lead to you having them on again in the future (you'd be surprised how many people have had them 2 or 3 times) or being unhappy with your smile for the rest of your life so just suck it up for now.

It does not “bring the lower jaw forward”. It moves lower teeth forward within the mandible and upper teeth backward within the maxilla which most certainly causes a net mandibular retrusion when the jaws are at rest.

If you anchored the elastics at the back of the top teeth and front of the bottom teeth it would do the reverse, and the net effect would be for the mandibular bone to come out further relative to maxillary bone.

My orthodontist told me the same bs in 1988 when he fitted me with elastics to “bring my lower jaw out.”! Everybody who went to him ended up with a retruded mandible and many with obstructive sleep apnea.

I don’t know if that makes sense but do I need to put my teeth where I think my Ortho wants them to finally be? Or will the elastics do that on their own?

Also, mini vent. I hate these things. They suck, they hurt, I can’t eat anything with them in or even yawn. If I take them out I get the sweet release of having full jaw movement but they hurt even worse when I put them back on afterwards.

I'm currently on week 4 of invisalign with class 2 elastics for my pretty severe overbite & overjet combo. I like how my face looks right now with the rubber bands in and it pushing my jaw out. I know with young kids/teens, rubber bands work by making skeletal changes to the jaw. However, I'm fully grown (26) so would the rubber bands make any kind of impact? I like the jawline I have when I have elastics on - will I be able to keep it after I'm done with invisalign?

Also more general question but how do rubber bands work on adults? Aren't our jaws done developing?

Do elastics move teeth or jaw?

Elastics or rubber bands are an important part of the orthodontic treatment for malocclusion. That is because they provide the force necessary to move the teeth and jaw into proper alignment.

Do elastics permanently move jaw?

Over time, rubber bands lose their elasticity. This means that the force they exert on your teeth and jaw will begin to decrease. Because of this, rubber bands need to be changed, often multiple times in a day.

How long does it take for rubber bands to move jaw?

That is the big (and most common) question we often hear. That answer depends on your bite and how much correction is needed. It could range from a month to 6-8 months. During the time you wear your elastics, it's important to wear them for 24 hours every day unless otherwise directed.

Can elastics move jaw in adults?

Doctor's Answers 1. You can use elastics for all kinds of things. You can use it to close the bite, you can use it to shift the jaw forward and backwards. Elastic is a very broad term, so it depends again on the case, what your dentist is trying to achieve.
