How far can you hear gunshots Reddit

Gunshot sounds have been quite broken by , I think, the new network bubble net code. I hear less than half of the shots by my squad mates, and that is when we are within a few meters of each other.

Given what the sound mod guys can pull off, I hope they can really do some awesome work with long distance bullet sounds and echoes (like jsrs).

In the meantime, sounds are extremely broken, not to mention the sounds they actually make.

How far can you hear gunshots Reddit

As well as in cityscapes on a normal day, how far would it be recognizable and noticeable by most people in an indoor environment? A suburb or town? A downtown of a city?

And for in particular, rifle rounds like 7.62x39, 5.56/.223 and pistol rounds like 9mm are in question here.

(Cause I can already hear people crying wolf - no, I am not planning illegal activity, this is just a question that has bugged me for a while)

Depends on line of sight. Lots of trees and buildings between you and the shot and you might not hear it even a block away.

If it happens on an open thoroughfare or highway type of location where it can act like a mountain canyon then you could hear it along the road quite a ways. Hundreds of meters at least.

level 2

eh ..... those are factors but a block away you still hear hit. When people shoot in my town you can hear it at least a half mile to a mile away and we have hills , trees , buildings ..

From personal experience I can confidently say [redacted]. And it's not like people [redacted]. So to answer your question simply: [redacted] give or take.

"Give it a take"

Oh god no

If a person is familiar with the the sound, it’s just different from other sounds like fireworks or a vehicle backfire. Anyway, weather affects the distance, rain, clear and cold, clear and warm, fog, building obstructing the sound path or reflecting the sound, type of firearm, and even the ammunition used. It’s not an easy 500 meters, 1000 meters. Basically, it depends.

level 1

Quite a distance if you have previously heard gunfire in similar urban environments. As they man below said, the amount of acoustic barriers between the shots and the observer (i.e. the person hearing it) will determine exactly what is most readily apparent as a gunshot and what isn't, but you should count on the reverberating sounds of gunfire being able to be heard and distinct as gunfire for several city blocks and possibly more than that in lower-density, low-rise urban/suburban environments.

This is the real reason that suppressors are a thing in MOUT, because they cut down on how many people are alerted to your shootout happening with the non-compliant oppo at the objective site, rather than the opposition at the objective not hearing you shoot at them. (Which, if you're ever fired a suppressed center-fire rifle pushing supersonic bullets, is obviously not about eliminating but rather decreasing/muffling the concussion -- You need to go subsonic to get anything akin to truly "quiet", and even that is still significantly louder than what sloppy movies make it out to be)

level 2

Yeah I figured as much about suppressors, although I probably won't get a chance to ever shoot suppressed here in canada, but the baddies still get em

level 2

I mean it's also about not giving your team mates hearing loss. Never shoot your 10.5 indoors

Living in an urban environment where gunshots are common, the answer is not as far as you'd think. I can pick out handgun fire discernibly to within about a half mile but past that it's tough to tell whether it's a gun, a firework, or some other noise.

Also, at least where I live, echoes make it almost impossible to locate the direction of a shot if you're not within line of sight to it. Part of the reason nobody kept their shotspotter systems, they're pretty much useless outside of an open plain.

level 1

As others have mentioned, there are too many variables to give a pat answer here. I will add one more: it is entirely different to fire a single shot versus a series of shots. If you fire a single shot, typically people who hear it basically say, "what's that?" If you fire a series, people say "someone's shooting!" One shot often flies under the radar...

level 1

Pretty far, but not very far

level 2

I’ve always hear it was up to very far, but only occasionally with the majority only going decently far.

Very thorough answer thank you

In a civilian environment, it’s not possible to do with certainty. There’s to many barrel lengths, types of ammo and muzzle devices out there all of which play a role in the gun’s sound profile.

Even the military has used muzzle devices to make 5.56 sound like 7.62x39.

level 2

Exactly. My first thought was what load for what barrel length, but then there is the question of what muzzle device and how much it redirects and in what direction. Then there are all the environmental variables.

So my answer is about tree fiddy

At what distance can you hear a gunshot?

A handgun shot can be heard about a mile away. At that distance, though, it might sound “almost like somebody tapping on a table,” Beisner says.

How far does the sound of a bullet go?

A handgun shot can be heard as far as 1 mile away depending on the conditions. More powerful shotgun ammunition can be heard up to 2 miles away.

What frequency are gunshots?

The peak SPLs at the shooter's ear ranged from 132 dB (miniature rifle) to 183 dB (howitzer). The spectral content of the main part of the acoustic energy was less than 400 Hz (peak 16-100 Hz) for large-caliber weapons and 150-2,500 Hz (peak 900-1,500 Hz) for small-caliber weapons (rifles).

How far can you hear gunshots DAYZ?

There are 3 different sounds that the game blends together at certain distances, these distances are; between 0m-50m, 50m-250m and 250m-3400m. Unsuppressed shots have a max range of 3400m and suppressed shots have a range of 200m or 250m, depending on what gun you use.
