Mad Max Fury Road explained Reddit

I was surprised to notice that a lot of people regard this film as the best film of that year and are inclined to put it on other best of lists, including people with kind of artsy tastes, because I saw the film as just a Hollywood blockbuster action film.

Now, the reason I'm making this thread is not to argue about what the proper take is on the film, but rather I would like to hear from people who do hold the film in such high esteem why they do and why they think it belongs on best of lists and isn't just an entertainment action film.

When people praise fury road, it's typically, and rightfully, for the mind-blowing action sequences and the women-driven narrative. However, one thing that I feel like gets lost in the shuffle sometimes is just how fantastic and dense the universe created in the movie is. What's really impressive to me is that how pretty much all of it is done without any exposition whatsoever and just through snippets of dialog and visual storytelling. Just within the first 20 minutes we find out the following:

  • water is seen as bad and is used as a means of control

  • the war boys need blood to survive and use human stragglers as "top ups"

  • worshipping chrome and metal and automotive carnage

  • the warlords having elite soldiers for their gasoline runs, i.e. the imperators

  • the various different "tribes" in the desert and all of them having different specialities in terms of vehicle warfare

  • different settlements providing gasoline and bullets

This is just a few of the storytelling beats you get without any narration or characters explaining things to each other. There are other little moments scattered throughout too. I watched the movie when it came out but watching it now again it really made me appreciate the work that went in creating this experience, even beyond that of a visceral, action-based one.

When I saw the movie, I considered it was a pretty good film and very entertaining, but nothing more than that. However, dozens of critics have said it's the best film of 2015, it's the greatest action film of all time, etc; but I don't see it. Yeah it's a good film, but I've seen other movies that I enjoyed more in this year than Mad Max 4.

Yeah I understand that they put a ton of work into the cinematography and a lot of the stunts were performed by actual stuntmen in dangerous situations, but the movie itself, I didn't feel was amazing and one of the greatest films of all time; partly because the car chase started at the beginning of the film and it seemed to encompass the whole movie. The movie felt too grandiose and over the top, with Immortan Joe looking like a twisted, warped version of the Humungus from Mad Max 2; and his vehicle entourage having a giant vehicle with amplifiers dedicated only to have some guy with a flamethrower guitar not play any actual music.

I'm not saying the movie sucked, it didn't, but I just don't really understand why it got so much praise.

Mad Max Fury Road explained Reddit

I honestly do not understand all the praise and acclaim this movie has received and still do. I have seen the film and I do appreciate it's technical merits and somewhat interesting story but apart that I never felt compelled to see it more then once. I just did not find anything in it that would push me to obsess about it like people around me do. Maybe reason is that main protagonist is not that. Maybe I would be more interested if movie was titled Furiosa. But even with title it is still a poor movie for me with little to offer, apart from one night fun in local multiplex. So I would like to see what movie did for you that makes you thing it is worthy for Oscar nominee for Best picture.

I've recently realised the true meaning behind Mad Max: Fury Road. The whole point of this movie is to sleep well and being well-rested when doing something important.

When someone dies or is hit during the fight it is always due to them not getting enough sleep. Lets summarize:

First important death of is of Angharath, who didn't have enough sleep as she was busy all the time being the Immortan favourite.

When mines set up by Max explode everyone but The Judge is ok with it. He is the only one that doesn't take a rest and tries to hunt for War Rig. We all know how it ends.

Then there is night where everyone is asleep except for Furiosa and Max. Furiosa doesn't sleep at all as she is driving all the time. She gets hurt and almost dies later. Max tries to sleep but he's woken up early due to his nightmares. He gets hit in the last fight and almost passes out but he survives. Meanwhile the rest of the girls are sleeping well and they won't get hit for the rest of the movie except for one minor hit on Toast.

The Many Mothers according to what we see in the movie are spending all of their time sitting in a trap waiting for a signal from Valkyrie. They reacted instantly when she screamed. This indicates that they don't get enough sleep as they always have to be ready to react for a signal. Most of them die in final fight.

After meeting Many Mothers there is one good shot that summarises entire message of the movie. Capable (redhead chick) lies in Nux arms and he stays awake. It shows how protective he is but also strongly implies contrast between their characters. Capable is a calm and methodical and Nux is the impulsive one. Redhead knows that she should get some rest but Nux refuuses to fall asleep staying awake for too long for his own good. While Capable will stay alive for the rest of the movie Nux will die in spectacular War Rig crash.

When War Rig passes by returning to the Citadel, Guitar Guy is asleep. He crashes into a War Rig but doesn't die on-screen so he could jump at the last moment. The Maneater is sitting enjoying his massage. He dies shortly before his truck explodes. Immortan is playing on his instrument instead of resting and he dies by Furiosa's hand. Rictus is standing and thinking about something, but his eyes are not closed. Dead by War Rig.

After realising the true meaning behind this movie I felt so inspired that I immediately went to my bed. I had a dream and it was a good one. I felt that this had a decisive impact on my life and everything now feels better. What a lovely day this was. I wanted to share this feeling with all of you.

Miller claimed that he wanted the movies to be “silent movies with sound,” an apparent oxymoron which meant that he was aiming to ape the hyper-visual, stunt-heavy stylings of Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton while keeping the dialogue to a minimum and ensuring the story stayed simple, emotionally intense, and easy-to- ...
