Sports are all about peaks and valleys – a fact that few franchises know better than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On one hand, the team has a Super Bowl championship banner to hang in their stadium. On the other, the Bucs have an embarrassing all-time winning record of .385 and at times have been the laughing stock of the NFL. Like we said… peaks and valleys.

Born to Lose

The Buccaneers joined the NFL in 1976 and had no trouble immediately earning the title of worst team in the league. Tampa Bay barely got through their inaugural season with a 0-14 record. They went on to lose the first 12 games of the 1977 season, setting an NFL record with 26 straight losses. On the bright side, the Bucs soon went from worst to first, winning a division title and reaching the NFC Championship in 1979. Quite the turnaround!

Doing It with Defense

For much of the team’s history, the Buccaneers have been able to hang their hat on the defensive side of the ball. After all, the so-called Tampa 2 defense was created by former head coach Tony Dungy and former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin during their tenure in Tampa. It was also a defense full of Pro Bowl players that became the catalyst for the only Super Bowl win in franchise history. In fact, Tampa’s win in Super Bowl XXXVII was one of the rare occasions that a defensive player was awarded Super Bowl MVP.

The franchise is so committed to playing strong defense that the only three players to have their number retired by the Buccaneers are defensive players. Derrick Brooks, Lee Roy Selmon, and Warren Sapp are the only three players whose jerseys hang at Raymond James Stadium. They are also the only three players in the Hall of Fame because of their performance while wearing a Bucs jersey.

When Will It End?

Outside of a brief period in the late ‘90s and early 2000s under Dungy and Jon Gruden, it’s been a largely miserable existence for the Bucs and their fans. Since that Super Bowl win, the Buccaneers have played in just two playoff games, both losses. Heading into the 2019 season, Tampa Bay is mired in an 11-year playoff drought that has spanned five different head coaches and included just three winning seasons. Time for one of those peaks, eh?
