How to calculate GPA in University

The optional row at the top can be used to input your current GPA, by inputting current GPA Hours in the credits column and current GPA in the grade column; these can be found by clicking on "View Transcript" in MySAIL, then find the totals at the bottom. Ensure that you enter GPA Hours in the credit column, not total credits.

To calculate your GPA for ONE semester:

  1. Multiply the numeric grade by the number of credit hours. The result is the honor points earned.
  2. Total the credit hours for the term; total the honor points for the term.
  3. Divide the total honor points by the total credit hours. The result is the GPA for the term.

To calculate your OVERALL GPA:

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above for each term.
  2. Total the credit hours from all terms; total the honor points from all terms.
  3. Divide the total honor points for all terms by the total credit hours for all terms. The result is the cumulative GPA.

This GPA calculator should only be used as a resource to help you understand how grade point averages are calculated, the results are not official. Official GPA calculations are completed by OU's Office of the Registrar and can be found in your SAIL account.

If you are calculating a projected GPA using S/U grades, these courses do not count towards GPA credit hours; leave these courses out of your calculation. If these courses were in previous semesters, they will not be included in the GPA Hours total found under "View Transcript" in MySAIL.

All grades appear on student transcripts. However, only numerical grades are used to determine the grade point average, which is rounded to two decimal places. To learn more about the grading scale, please check the FAQ.

How to calculate GPA in University

Grade-Point-Average (GPA) Calculation or Averaging of Grades

The grade-point-average is the arithmetic mean of the grade points earned for all credits taken at the University of Arizona for University Credit or by Special Examination for Grade, where regular grades are awarded. Ordinarily cumulative GPAs are calculated using only the courses at the career level of the student. For example, the undergraduate GPA is based on undergraduate courses only (see Graduate Credit for Seniors, Grade Replacement Opportunity, and Second Start, Academic Renewal for exceptions).

Only regular grades (A, B, C, D, E) are included in the calculation of the grade-point-average. Grade points are assigned to each regular grade as follows:

Grade:Grade Points:
A 4 points
B 3 points
C 2 points
D 1 point
E 0 points

To calculate the GPA, the unit value for each course in which a student receives one of the above grades is multiplied by the number of grade points for that grade. The sum of these products is then divided by the sum of the units.

For example, to calculate the cumulative GPA for these completed courses:

Fall:Spring:
BIOC 182 (5 units) Grade: A ANTH 195A (1 unit) Grade: A
SOC 101 (3 units) Grade: B INDV 101 (3 units) Grade: B
ENGL 101 (3 units) Grade: B
MATH 110 (4 units) Grade: C

Multiply the units represented by each grade by the number of points for that grade:

Grade:Units: Points: Grade Points(quality points):
A 6 x 4 = 24 grade points
B 9 x 3 = 27 grade points
C 4 x 2 = 8 grade points
Total: 19 units x 59 grade points

The cumulative GPA is the sum of the grade points divided by the sum of the units.
In this case: 59/19 = 3.105
