The first step is to figure out the overall square footage of the space you want to cover in rock. The math for calculating square footage is pretty straightforward, length x width. If the area you are covering is not a perfect square, split it up into squares or rectangles to get as close as you can, then add the sum of square feet together to come up with the total square footage.

To Calculate accurate quantity of rock can save you money and headaches. You don’t want to order too little rock than estimate and not have enough to adequately cover your landscape. But if you order too much, you’ve wasted money—and wasted labor spreading it around. There are two factors to consider when calculating the amount of landscape rock to order for your project: The size of the space you’re covering and how deep you want the coverage.

You are looking to buying rock or stone for your landscaping projects, you need to know how much rock you should purchase and you can load in your vehicle.

Most of rock or stone supplier which are available nearly to you, will give you option to deliver rock and stone at your homes, for this they should cost some money for transportation. If you have a truck or vehicle that you can use to bring rock bag to your destination or construction site, then it is cheaper and faster option for you.

A 1/2 cubic foot bag of rock to stone weighs about 50 pound and will cover 2 square feet at 3 inches thick. To calculate the size, measure the length and the width of your landscaping project area. Multiply length and width to come up with the square footage of your coverage area. So if your project is 20 feet long by 10 feet wide, your coverage area is 200 square feet.

Second step to decide how deep you want your coverage. For most purposes, about 2 inches of rock will be adequate. If you’re using rocks that are themselves larger than 2 inches, then the depth will probably be the size of the rocks, that is, you’ll just want one layer of 3-8 inch rocks.

Using this formula, you can see that if you’re looking to cover 1000 square feet with 1”-3” size rocks, you are probably going to need 12.5 tons. If you’re using smaller size rock, say 3/4”-1”, you may need only 10 tons.

A average size of 1″- 8″ typical Rock such as pebbles, cobbles and boulders will cover range from 60 to 80 square footage per ton. Its means 1 ton of average size rock will cover 60 to 80 square feet area.

As per general practices, you will need approximately 16.5 tons (8.33 yards) of 3″- 8″ size of landscaping rock (cobbles, boulders, or stone) for 1000 square feet area and if you are using smaller size, says 1″-3″ size of cobbles and boulders, you may need only 12.5 tons of rock to cover 1000 square footage. A typical rock will cover 60 to 80 square foot per ton, so you will need amount of rock by ton to cover 1000 square footage = 1000÷60 = 16.5 tons or 1000 ÷80 = 12.5 tons.
