Is Seven Deadly Sins season 5 out in Japan?

The Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Taizai / 七つの大罪) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Nakaba Suzuki.[1] The series follows Elizabeth, the third princess of the Kingdom of Liones, who is in search of the Seven Deadly Sins, a group of former Holy Knights who were disbanded after the kingdom was overthrown. She enlists the help of Meliodas and Hawk, the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins and the leader of the order of scraps disposal, to assemble the remaining members of the Seven Deadly Sins and take back the kingdom from the Holy Knights. The series aired on MBS, TBS and their JNN stations from October 5, 2014 to March 29, 2015. A second season of the anime series was confirmed on September 27, 2015, and aired from January 13 to June 30, 2018. A third season of the anime series by Studio Deen was confirmed on April 9, 2019, and aired from October 9, 2019 to March 25, 2020. A fourth season of the anime series was confirmed on March 24, 2020. Originally slated for a October 2020 debut, it was postponed to premiere on January 13, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An original video animation (OVA) titled "Ban's Additional Chapter" (バンの番外編, Ban no Bangai-hen) was included with the limited edition of volume 15 of the manga, released on June 17, 2015.[3] A second OVA composed of nine humorous shorts was shipped with the limited edition of the sixteenth volume of the manga, released on August 12, 2015.[4]

The first Seven Deadly Sins anime series was licensed for English release by Netflix as its second exclusive anime, following their acquisition of Knights of Sidonia.[5] All 24 episodes were released on November 1, 2015 in both subtitled and English dub formats. All four specials from the series' Signs of Holy War arc, labeled as Season 2, was added to the service on February 17, 2017. The Revival of the Commandments arc, labeled as Season 3, was released on October 15, 2018 in the United States.[6] The Imperial Wrath of the Gods arc, labeled as Season 4, was released on August 6, 2020 in the USA.[7]

Seven Deadly Sins is currently riding high on the Netflix charts after the latest set of episodes were released. Season 5 of the show, however, has already been confirmed by TV Tokyo, who air the anime in its native Japan.

Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon's Judgement (Nanatsu no Taizai: Fundo no Shinpan in Japan) is the name of the next season, which will be Season 5 of the show on Netflix and Season 4 in Japan. The reason for this is because Signs of Holy War is classed as a separate OVA (original video animation) special in Japan and as Season 2 on Netflix.

Originally, this season was meant to air in Japan in October 2020, which would have meant it had a likely Netflix release date in July or August 2021. Traditionally, the streamer has aired episodes of the series in the U.S. four to five months after the final episode of the season has aired on TV Tokyo, and the previous two seasons which started in October ended in Japan in March.

The show, however, will no longer be airing on TV Tokyo this October. Due to the coronavirus, production of Season 5 of the beloved anime series, which is currently number three in the Netflix TV charts, has been delayed.

However, a new release date has now been announced. Seven Deadly Sins: Dragon's Judgement is now set to air on TV Tokyo BS-TV Tokyo and five other affiliates in January 2021.

As for what that means for the show's Netflix release date, it is not good news. Assuming the new season follows the previous ones and has 24 episodes, these are likely to air weekly in Japan until mid-June 2021. That would mean that the earliest likely Netflix release date for Seven Deadly Sins Season 5 in the U.S. is October or, more likely, November 2021.

There are a few silver linings, however, for American fans of the anime. A Japanese-language trailer has also been released that gives fans their first glimpse of the new episodes.

The makers of the manga the show is based on have also announced that they will be making a spin-off to the Seven Deadly Sins. Known as Nanatsu no Taizai: Mokushiroku no Yon-Kishi or The Seven Deadly Sins: The Four Knights of the Apocalypse, it has been rumored that it will be a sequel loosely based on the myths of King Arthur, who is also currently featured in fellow Netflix show Cursed.
