What is marshmallow fluff?

Also known as marshmallow crème, it is a marshmallow spread used in place of marshmallows. The texture is different and does not provide the same gooey results as traditional marshmallows.

However, it is just as delicious and so easy to use. We have a recipe for homemade marshmallow fluff if your store does not carry it. It is actually easy to make.

Ingredients:

  • Rice Krispie Cereal
  • Marshmallow Fluff
  • Butter

How to make rice krispie treats with marshmallow fluff:

  • First, put the butter and marshmallow fluff in a small sauce pan.
  • Then, use medium high heat and stir constantly. Keep stirring until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth. You do not want any lumps from the fluff. Keep a close eye on the mixture and be careful not to over heat.
  • Next, remove the pan from the heat.
  • Then, get out a large mixing bowl. Use a measuring cup to get the cereal and pour the Rice Krispie cereal in the bolw. Next, pour the marshmallow fluff mixture on top.

  • Finally, pour the mixture into a 9X13 pan. I suggest spraying wax paper or parchment paper with cooking spray and using it to press the mixture down into the bottom of the pan.

This will make it less messy. You can also use a rubber spatula to press it down. Sometimes I spray the spatula with cooking spray to prevent it from sticking.

It needs to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to 1 hour so the bars can solidify. Then just cut and serve.

Don’t try to cut them into bars too soon or it will be difficult and the bars will look messy.

How to store

I recommend not storing these in the refrigerator as the bar will become dried out and not as gooey. Allow the bars to stay at room temperature up to 5 days.

Ours never last that long though. Everyone eats these pretty fast. In fact, I often have to make a double batch.

Tips:

  • Don’t overheat the mixture or they will be crumbly instead of gooey. This is very important to making sure the bars stay together after cut.
  • The mixture will need to be pressed down firmer than regular rice krispie treats made with regular marshmallows to pack the mixture in the pan. They definitely need more pressure applied.
  • You can also heat the marshmallow fluff mixture in the microwave. Place the butter and marshmallow fluff in a large microwave safe bowl. Heat in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval until the mixture is melted and combined.

  • Add chocolate chip morsels to the top for a change. I like the mini ones. You can just sprinkle them all over the top after you put the marshmallow mixture into the pan.
  • Sprinkles make everything fun. Enjoy this treat for holidays, birthdays and special occasions by adding sprinkles on top. You can choose any color or type you like.
  • Cereal. You can substitute cocoa krispies or seasonal rice krispies to jazz this recipe up. Red and green make a fun substitution at Christmas.
